Basically my friend has a virus and doesn't have an HP (I know how to reformat without deleting everything imporant on those) anyway he doesn't have any anti-virus software to remove it or whatever... so does anyone know a site where he can download some free antivirus software to get rid of the damn thing.
Basically if you can do a free scan on the Norton, Mcaffee, or Trend antivirus sites and have the bug identified, you can download the help files that tell you how to remove it manually. Just be damn careful, extraction in some cases can be pretty complex and if you screw up, could really FUBAR his system. Especially if you have to get into the registry.

There are a couple of viruses that attack McAfee specifically, and exist to disable their antivirus software. I'm pretty sure McAfee's created an upgrade with the fix for that by now, but it's always a chasing game with that stuff.
I highly recommend pcillin and housecall for on-the-spot immediate instant virus scan and repair.
As for Norton, it's such an enormous ram hog that I uninstalled it from my new computer. I just use housecall, and a couple of different firewalls, and reject all popups from my browser, use netscape for my e-mail instead of Outlook, and refuse any and all forwarded e-mail that I didn't specifically ask for.
In 15 years I have never had a virus on any of my computers, except one that just made my keyboard have an audible click every May 10th. I left it there because I thought it was kinda cute.
