Ever read Thomas More's Utopia (Sir Thomas More, for the non-UK people that are believers in free speech)?

Women are workers too!

We're in 2005 and yet, most people still respect people that don't respect others, worse, countries respect countries that don't respect their own.

Is it (again) because of the capitalism? Fuck the people, gimme their cash?

Why are we allowing those countries into our banks, in our institutions, in our industries, in our entreprises?

Why aren't we just blocking them and tell em to be civilized or die trying?

Why aren't we just telling them to change or fuck off?

Its because of money and because we aren't kings of the world and shouldn't tell others how to live their lives (unless they fuck with us, of course).

Because different countries have different beliefs and ideals for their people, and that's their right. As long as people are in agreement with their methods and don't hurt anyone else, what do you care how they live their life?

I get an emotional reaction when I read about societies that lack even the basic necessities - food, drinkable water, shelter. I feel empathy for societies where the majority agree to stone women who expose any part of their bodies other than their eyes in public. Did it occur to you, CT, that maybe they are all in agreement, because if they express any disagreement they are summarily killed? Would you like to live in a society where you are not ALLOWED to disagree, and therefore the rest of the world just assumes you are agreeing willingly to this kind of life?

"No one in that country wears green, and not a single person from that country has ever said they even want to wear green. So it's fine for them, and we should just leave them alone and let them not wear green."

"BUT - they also have a law that states anyone who even hints that they might some day want to wear green, will be tortured and executed in a disgusting manner in public. Not only that, but their people are rewarded for turning in any traitors who disobey this law. So there are people who are able to eat, and drink clean water, and buy clothing, merely because they claimed their mother said she wanted to wear green some day. Even if the claim was a lie."

Would you want to live like that, CT? Do you feel absolutely nothing for those countries that exist like that? Because - there are countries that exist like that. I'm not offering suggestions of what to do about it, because frankly, I don't know what to do. But to say "Oh just let them live how they want" is foolish, and dangerous.

I'll say little here, other than this: Until you have lived in one of these countries for an extended period of time, and come to know the people, you'd do better not to comment on their culture. It's something you know absolutely nothing about.

You know what, I'm not getting into this with you, Roberta. I personally wouldn't want to live like that, but then, I've been living an American life. I haven't lived their life so I don't know, and neither do you, so who the fuck are WE to tell them how to live? As long as they are not hurting anyone, leave it and should they ask for help, we will.

I'm trying to figure out if that was said in jest (the unless they fuck with us comment) or serious...
If it was serious, I just wanted to say welcome to my side.

As I've always said, people can live and do as they choose. It's stuffing it down people's throats that is wrong in my opinion. However I don't think war or violence is the best course of action as a response to the above "offense", however.

Everyone has their opinions.

Violence brings about the quickest change, though the only way to make it permanent is though peace. -Dave

I agree with the title, except the governments should be treated as such, the people suffer enough on their own.

Every culture has the right of self determination. It is not for us to impose western ideals on other cultures.

That's the point.

Treat your own people (part of, a small part, whatever) as objects, as slaves and you're showing the world what you are in reality.

Women in civilized people aren't just fucking breeding machine, they are breathing/living/fun (oh damn fun) people.

I find it weird (and special) that almost all "rebel" countries are those that treat their own (most of the them their women) as objects and pure toys.

I only sorta agree...

You know those persian/muslim women that wear birkas I think they're called... covered head to toe in layers so you can only see their eyes. When commented on how horrible it was for them... by a woman in a miniskirt and stilletos.... The muslim women replied that they wore what they wore for protection and how dare we judge them or their culture when we wear uncomfortable clothing for "fashion looks" and shoes that ruin or legs and feet... Starve ourselves and are truly unhappy being us as women in the US for the most part.
