View Full Version : When your boss does the wrong thing.

So today at work we had an incident that involved a minor gaming. Security was waiting for the word from us on what to do, and my supervisor did the completely wrong thing. Not just the wrong thing morally, or not what I personally would have done, but the wrong thing procedurally. The part that sucks is that it could potentially expose us to a fine.
The part that really sucks is that after he told security what to do, I hesitated for a second and then said, "shouldn't you be doing (the right thing) instead?" He just looked at me and was like, "nah, we'll just let security do it their way."
THEIR way!?!? They were doing what HE told them to do!
It also sucks that he knows what the right move was, and for whatever reason just didn't feel like handling it correctly. I know my director is going to be pissed when she hears about it tomorrow, and I'm irritated that we could have handled it properly but didn't.
I don't want to be the person that whines to my director about how things could have gone right if my supervisor had only listened. I also don't want her to think the entire shift is retarded and that no one knew what to do.
Thoughts?

If you were the only one to raise a question, perhaps the entire shift except for you IS retarded, or just doesn't have the courage of their convictions, either case seems to be in need of rectifying.
Congrats for having the stones to at least point it out and moreso on following up on things.
Sorry you had to be the one to do it, but it also may be just the kind of thing to help you with a promotion along the way.

Women have no capacity to speak up or think for themselves, so it's okay that you didn't say anything to your boss. If you get in trouble claim that you felt pressured not to say anything because of sexual discrimination. Milk that discrimination for all it's worth!

Uh, I DID say something to my boss. Once I spoke up, the rest of the shift agreed with me.
Anyway, thanks Skirm.

You've done what you needed to do. Now when your Director investigates it, and asks the staff what happened just be sure to relate the story as it happened. Let the Director conclude for herself that your supervisor's a boob then she'll deal with it appropriately.
The only time that wont work is when you've got a Director that will only ask the supervisor what happaned then make a determination from there. Thats when the supervisor will recognize that no staff will be interviewed and then feel like she can cover and blame it on the staff. Doesnt sound like this will be teh case in this instance though.

I agree with Skirmisher. I think it's great that you stood up for the correct procedure.
I don't know how often this type of thing happens in your workplace, but it happens so often in mine that I've been dubbed "the one who knows it all" because I'm always "prophesising" how things will turn out poorly based on supervisor decisions and then how they'll have to correct things by doing X. In the four years I've been there, I've not been wrong once.
Anyway, keep it up. The positive recognition is good for your job. You could be replacing your supervisor one day.

I totally agree with this... It's really hard to speak up in a work enviornment for some people. I was in a similar situation except it was worse. My boss was stealng. I turned him in and I think nothing was done to this day... (He was taking orders and then clearing them and freeing off the food and taking the money to make up for money shorts or it went in his pocket. It was a fast food restraunt in TN.)
Anyway congrats for doing the right thing. No matter what happens you'll have great karma and anything your superviser says will only reflect badly on them... I'm sure security will say they only were doing what the sup said... Hopefully the boss will handle things as they should be.
