View Full Version : Perhaps...

To join this forum, maybe we should make it a bit more difficult. Perhaps a harder registration... and it having to be approved before the poster can start posting here etc...

I'm all for that!!

Ugh, no kidding. I almost lost my breakfast this morning.

Yeah, I figured that would be a good suggestion after this morning.

I am against this because it would not do justice to the wide range of backgrounds that could join in the future.

I understand why you want this but that one person will get bored and stop

Heh, yeah. Every application has to be approved by mods.

Man that should be fun.
I'm sure that'll cause some ripples.

Everyone has to RE-apply to be a member too.

I like new posters but jesus christ, something needs to be done to stop these retards from sneaking in.

I'm all for a new registration, or maybe possibly ban new accounts from posting pics til they're approved since from what I've seen it seems to be pictures that are cropping up.

theotherjohn
06-27-2005, 12:05 PM
for all those voting yes for harder registration?

Do you think you would have passed a harder registration and screening process?

new accounts have a trial period till they can post pics seems like a winner to me

I'm not really one for screening registrations because that would be really tedious.

Most people would pass unless their information matched a banned member. It's just not feasible for a forum of this size.

I was just initially all for because I'm TIRED.

Yes, I'm not a fucking child who's going to create new accounts because I got pissed off.

Seriously I think it depends on how tight the restrictions are.

A mod should have to verify the new users IP prior to letting them begin to post her, in my opinion.

easy to get get new IP and many of us own several computers so our MAC is different also.

Im with CT because it seems like less work to deal with a few bad apples than tons of work on the front end with everyone

Or at least have a restriction of say 2 days before they could post under a new name?

WTF does this even mean? My IP is 66.189.94.56 (hack away) under Charter Communications, but I can just as easily put myself in Russia. IP doesn't mean anything.

Something like the "shop" hack would give people who have posted a certain amount of times certain privelidges, but that doesnt take away the potential for abuse from a knob like Stanley.

The registration thing is a better option, just requiring you to have email verification before becoming an approved member, although there is room for abuse, it just makes it a lot more difficult for someone just to make user name after user name.

I am not sure you can ban emails though from the registration process, just ISPs

Edited to show the post I was replying to as I took too long to write it.

Yes because everyone knows how to change their IP. What would you suggest oh wise child?

<<The registration thing is a better option, just requiring you to have email verification before becoming an approved member>>

Awesome, you like the way it's been done since the forums opened.

<<it just makes it a lot more difficult for someone just to make user name after user name.>>

Clearly, it doesn't, unless your idea of "email verification" is not using a unique and valid e-mail address that your password is sent to.

<<I am not sure you can ban emails though from the registration process, just ISPs>>

If you can do it with an IP, you can certainly do it with an e-mail address. All it takes is an exclude list.

<<Yes because everyone knows how to change their IP. What would you suggest oh wise child?>>

Almost everyone that I know of that has made multiple accounts post-ban (and even while active posters with no demerits at all) has, in fact, done this. All it takes is a proxy setting. They get a new proxy (with or without my help), and from that they get a new IP. There are hundreds of free ones to choose from.

I currently post under 4 names.

2 of them being Arkans and Anticor.

Fair point. I somehow remembered not having an email when I registered, but that must have been somewhere else.

Which on XMB boards, I believe, is based upon usernames and ISPs.

I was under the assumption that a decent coder would be able to implement one with e-mail addresses.

In any event, what is accomplished when you ban an e-mail address? It can only be used once, so you'd have to be able to see into the future to know what e-mail address a banned poster is going to use.

Hulkein
06-27-2005, 12:28 PM
I'm pretty sure you can exclude e-mails.

I know with vBulletin you can ban email addresses, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to with XMB, it's not a very complicated thing.

It still wouldn't stop anyone from getting a @yahoo.com or any other free e-mail service over and over again, and using a proxy.

There is really nothing you can do if someone wants to really bother you. The best hope is said person finds something constructive to do instead of wasting their own time being a douche bag.

Correct. I nullified the purpose of it.

On the matter of what I suggest: nothing new. The way things are handled now is fine.

So you don't have any ideas of your own on how to exclude certain people from creating new accounts and posting. Gotcha.

Sure, I have ideas. They all require human effort, though. There's no way to code something that will weed out banned members. The only way to do anything about it is to go with the application to become a new poster approach or require that software be installed on the machine in use that communicates with the server (which, in turn, also requires server software). So unless you're willing to either shy away from new members and waste the mods' time by making a spectacle of the registration process or inconvenience everyone by forcing them to use a client, there's nothing that can be done.

Can you please, PLEASE stop saying ISP? IP. IP. IP.

IPs are not banned on this forum and will not be. Usernames are, however, and it's quite effective; that username can no longer post.

Umm, that would suck if a program would have to be downloaded to be on the PC.
I would go crazy at work as I'd never dare download something on this computer.

I think its fine the way it is now. It's a moderators job to weed out the trouble makers and that's what they are here for. Increasing their work load would accomplish little in the long run. If somone wants to wreck havoc, they will find a way.

I think this screening process that can only be approved by moderators will only increase the "clique" conspiracy that people have been suggesting. To be blunt, I think it's a bad idea, and has no consideration to the big picture. It will only alienate new blood out of the forums jus tto implement a screening process to block 1 or 2 people. It's simply not practical.

There was a problem. CT took control, that was the end of it.

It would be easy to do though. Just add a check box on the registration page to say "Are you Stanley or Lycain?"

Asha

I share Shalla's point.

I wasn't condoning the idea when I mentioned it, before.
It really would make the clique idea more deep seated.

Yeah, I was going to say, I thought IPs were banned here.

Banned members who really want to continue to cause trouble just use proxies... Nothing can be done, except for things that would be considered too time consuming or intrusive.

we also have moderators who moderate these boards. They could probably have 3 moderators in heavy traffic folders. Or review more applications.

Granted, cause they can be circumvented. It's just a feature of these boards. I think it's hardly used though, precisely for this reason because in the end, it doesn't do a bit of good.

I know it can be done, but I recall it being said on more than one occasion that it's not used.

If this is the case, all is well.
