Hello, my name is Revalos, and I am a downloadaholic.

I just got a message saying that I have exceeded my monthly bandwith allowance on Comcast Cable Internet.

Now, I've downloaded a lot...a LOT of stuff with DSL, never seeing this. Is it just an aspect of cable? I freaking just had the cable installed about a week ago.

Ah well...time to cut back on the porn eh?

Only people they see as "abusing" the service. Comcast is the only one I've heard that actually is doing it though, cox seems to not care.

I'd totally bitch about it, look up your contract or something, you paid for a month of service... did they list specific bandwidth amounts in that contract?

Most service providers are beginning to introduce download limits in their packages these days simply to stop all this downloading. It sucks, but its gonna happen.

Call me an internet idiot.. but don't games that you play online take up just as much bandwidth as downloading stuff? When I am playing WoW.. my hard drive is usually cranking most of the time.

Personally, I would change providers if that message came up.

Well, I turned on my computer this morning and everything seems fine. I found out yesterday that what was happening was that I was downloading some crap while playing Battlefield 2 (which hasn't been patched to optimize its netcode) and that's what generated the bandwidth limit.

They've removed it for now, but they said that they do have "recourse against bandwith abuse." They would not give me a set amount, just said that if I am downloading more than about 5 gigs per day, I need to watch myself because in the ToS they do state that they can disconnect my service if they perceive bad effects on their other customers.

Personally, I believe that is a crock of shit, but whatever. I'm stuck with this crap because my DSL turned to goo when I moved (went from 3.0mbps to 500kbps because of line distance). If I get the message again, I'll probably have to upgrade to their "business" internet which removes most of the upload/download limits.
