The skinny: I need a new cpu for school. It has to be a PC laptop. It has to be under 2k. Of course less would be better.

Catch: Lauren (wifey) doesn't like the idea of me gaming on my "work" notebook -- but I do. So I need a discrete "rig". Alienware wont work here. I've checked out all the usual suspects and few of them having graphics upgrades available. What I'm looking at is around 2.0/1028/40.

If you're bored at work, waiting to get into battlegrounds, or just avoiding sleep I would appriciate any advice some of you might have. USC has a discount program with gateway -- and they allow a graphics upgrade -- but I've noticed they're not doing too well as a corp. Is this due to poor products or "Dude, you're gettin' a Dell!"?

Help!

I happen to have a laptop for sale that would be excellent for an aspiring young student.

The problem I have with Dell is trying to find someone that gives a damn or even listens to what you are trying to order. (also someone that speaks English)

I ordered two computers at two different times from two different reps and when I finally got them to send me a copy of my order in e-mail (after requesting several times) they had added all sorts of stuff I never requested. So I cancelled both of them and told them why.

Piss poor customer service would be my main complaint. The computers themselves aren't bad.

Do you think the 64 mb radeon 9700 will be sufficient to play a game of Battlegrounds to survive Con. Law lectures?

And what kind money would I be spending to upgrade to 1gb ram?

I don't know in both instances.

You'd probably want to get a 128MB dedicated memory video card, though. I only looked for like 3 seconds.

This should actually cover what you want and then some.

Whatever you do, make sure you get the Pentium M processor otherwise your battery life will be about 30 minutes.

Thanks for the suggestions Alex.

I was looking around the site and there are a couple of good deals.

Back to searching.

Bump.

I am buying in the next 6-8 hours and need some input about Gateway if possible.

I've heard it doesn't matter today -- but I have some concerns that they might go bankrupt (a reliable source told me).

It's between a Dell and a Gateway. Both have pretty much the same components but the dell is going to be a $150 more expensive. Is it worth it?

Get the Dell.

Though, I fucking hate buying Dell for personal computers, but it's the lesser of two evils.

Dude, I'm getting a dell!

Inspiron 6000
Pentium M 2.0 ghz
1gig ram
60 gig hd
128MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY™ RADEON X300 (had the cut and paste handy from a google search)
15.4 inch screen.

$1400.

Thanks to all who helped with their input. I appriciate it.

Yeah, my biggest problem with buying a gateway is exactly that.

I doubt they will exist in 12-18 months.

Been losing so much money for so long....and then where is that tech support and warranty?

Looks like a good buy, Keller. I think you'll enjoy your Dell product. I've been more than satisfied with mine. :)

Inspiron 6000 is a good choice. My girlfriend just got one, and one of my roommates has one. The monitor is pretty damn big as well.
