Taken from someone's livejournal:

But I come back and start working full time. Pay is fantastic and benefits are great but, my time is limited to Wednesday evenings and Saturday evenings. Sundays too but those don't count for much. Whatever. I'm getting paid upwards to 300 bucks a week after deductions over the summer so I'm not complaining.

Note: the job he is referring to is a bank teller.

Also note: he has terrible math skills, but is going to be handling government money.

Now we get into complete bullshit. He says he's working Wednesday evening and Sunday. The bank is not open Wednesday evening. The bank is not open Sunday.

He says he's being paid $300 a week with maximum 21 hour weeks (maximum 7 hours/day, 3 days). This is not full time by any means. A teller will get $15/hr if the bank is very generous. That's $315 untaxed income per week if he works every possible hour, which leaves no room for the fact that the bank is closed two of the three days he claims to work. His taxable income doesn't exist -- assume 15% tax bracket. AT MOST, he can get $267.75 with a 21-hour work week.

It's saddening how people can be so fucking retarded.

I read it that he had those times available for himself, not that he was working them.

Yeah, Bob. His 'time' is referring to the time he's off.

Edited to call you a dummy.

If he's a peer of yours, I can't imagine he's getting anywhere close to $15 per hour as a bank teller.

I got offered as a bank teller as an internship while I was in college. This was in Center City Philly, which you typically (like most cities) make a little more money because things are more expensive (city taxes, etc.) I think I was offered $10, AND I got the job as a favor from one of the Board of Trustees of the bank.

And I was a Finance Major going to Villanova at the time, so I was definately qualified (over qualified really) to work as a teller.

I'm calling bullshit, just like you sniffed it out and blamed it on his stupidity.

I just think he's doing a little penis waving in his livejournal to make himself look better.

edit: Or, you (and I) misinterpreted it.

<<I read it that he had those times available for himself, not that he was working them.>>

A distinct possibility.

So he's just getting $300/week working 6-day weeks.

I can live with that because it makes me laugh.

I think Alex loses on this one. I'm reading that quote like everyone else. Wed and Sat evenings off + Sundays. That's normal as the banks are normally only open til noon on Sat and he probably has a half day on Wed to make up for the half day on Sat. That would still give him 40 hrs a week which is about 8 dollars an hour before taxes to give him/her 300 a week. Decent for a summer job.

8 bones an hour for unskilled labor working in an air conditioned workplace... Not bad for a HS kid.

$9 an hour is pretty impressive for someone just starting work.

How much do you make?

I thought you had to be at least 18 to work as a bank teller... and if you were under 18, you couldn't work a full 40 hours per week.

I think it depends on the labor laws on the state, PB. Plus, lots of employers don't care. I worked at an ice-cream only DQ in high school and my boss had 13 year old kids working 50+ hours/week there.

A Dairy Queen is a far cry from being a bank teller in my opinion. When I go to a DQ.. I almost expect a kid working there. When I go to a bank, I expect an adult.

I've never seen anyone that looked under 20 working in a bank as anything but a janitor... Times have changed? Who knows and if he's just tooting his horn, that's somewhat normal at their age IMO.

Just using it as an example, PB. A lot depends on the bank.... national chain? Local CU? I knew kids in high school that worked at the local credit union during the summer. Not 14 year olds, but kids nonetheless.

You have to be at least 15. I think you can work a certain amount under 18, and even less under 16. It also varies by state.

<<A Dairy Queen is a far cry from being a bank teller in my opinion. When I go to a DQ.. I almost expect a kid working there. When I go to a bank, I expect an adult.>>

Mainly college students get the summer teller jobs. Occasionally, the position will go to a high school student. That's in cities, though. The bank in question is located in my town. There's no interest in working there. I'm surprised, though, that they would have a high school student as opposed to the generic old woman.

SpunGirl
06-23-2005, 04:34 PM
Generic Old Women probably make a lot more demands - smoke break, health benefits, days off to have a mammogram - than the summer job kid.

There are a lot of restrictions on kids under 18, especially under 16. That's why most places don't hire them. However, it's a LOT more lenient from June 1st to September 1st.

$8 an hour is damn good for a first job. Mine paid $4.65. :(

It's a state law, so I don't know.

In Massachusetts, though, you can only work like 35 hour weeks if you're 16 and 30 hour weeks if you're 15. Something like that.

Jolena

The state I live in says that you can work 40 hours a week, but not during school. It's his summer job, so he's probably in the clear.

If you're under 18, he probably has a work visa type thing. Something you have your parents and/or school to sign off on.

It is viable. I say go him.

As for the way the quote was interpreted by others, I agree. It sounds like his days off, not the days he actually works.

12 an hour 40 hour week was my first job. But farm work isn't for everyone. My best friend's dad owned the farm and we had a blast but we worked our asses off. I had my own room at their house and lived their during the summer months.

More acres than I care to remember, 2500+ head of pig, 75+ head of cattle. Beans and corn and fyi detassling corn is some of the most thankless work there and at the end of the day you don't want to do anything but drink a shit load of water and then crash.

I was working in a pizza place in High school making $5 an hour.. but it was cash.

But the benefits of free food, arcade games, drugged out boss and hot girls made it feel like $13 an hour.

I worked at a gas station when I was 16. $5.50 an hour (which was over minimum wage). We had a full service lane, but the owner made it so every customer got at least their windows cleaned and asked if we could check the oil level or tire pressure.

It was a pain in the ass job, but the owner's insistence on people being called "sir" and "ma'am" definitely readied me for future interviews/jobs.

My first ever on the books job was at 15 when I became a lifeguard at the local YMCA. I'd get anywhere from 8 to 30 hours a week, depending on what hours were available. I started at $2.40 an hour and after a month or two was increased to $2.65 because I was always on time and never pulled a no-show.

At 16 I got a summer job with Parks & Rec as a lifeguard at one of the city pools. I made the insanely great wage of $3.11 an hour for a 40 hour week. If they needed us more than 40 hours we got time and a half! I felt like the richest kid in the world.

This was in Pittsburgh, 1974-1975.

During the summers while in high school I worked at McDonalds.

I got paid about $5 an hour. I got the job mostly because my friend's mom was a manager there, so all three of us worked together. Course they were my ride so I had to work whatever hours they did, and they kept choosing the breakfast shift. I HATE the breakfast shift.

"I only want ONE pancake, and only pay for ONE. I can't eat TWO!"

"I'm a senior citizen and I demand to have my unbuttered, ten cent muffin accompanied with my complimentary coffee."

*mutters*

Edited to put the F in shift, even though without it makes perfect sense still.

I wish I were kidding. That happened quite often. No offense to PB, but senior citizens le sux0r. They want and they want and they want free or next to nothing food, bitching that they've paid their dues all their life and shouldn't have to, and that people like myself should be catering to them hand and foot.

I really don't know how I stayed there all summer without crawling over the counter to kick the shit out of them.

That's a play on the character I used to play in Gemstone. All of her gear was embossed or etched or embroidered with a portrait of a kitten.

I used to love charging into battle swinging 'a silvery vultite broadsword embossed with a prancing kitten with emerald eyes and one tattered ear'. Every time I swung the thing it said that. Quite obnoxious, and really freaking funny.
