Priest unrepentent after crucifying of nun

June 18 2005 at 02:46PM
By Laura Chiriac

Tanacu, Romania - A Romanian Orthodox priest who ordered the crucifixion of a young nun because she was "possessed by the devil" and now faces murder charges was unrepentant on Saturday as he celebrated a funeral mass for his alleged victim.

"God has performed a miracle for her, finally Irina is delivered from evil," Father Daniel, 29, the superior of the Holy Trinity monastery in north-eastern Romania, said before celebrating a short mass "for the soul of the deceased", in the presence of 13 nuns who showed no visible emotion.

He insisted that from the religious point of view, the crucifixion of Maricica Irina Cornici, 23, was "entirely justified", but admitted that he faced excommunication as well as prosecution, and was seeking a "good lawyer".

Cornici was found dead on Wednesday, gagged and chained to a cross, after fellow nuns called an ambulance, according to police.

Mihaela Straub, spokesperson for the police in the province of Vaslui, said Daniel and four other nuns had claimed Cornici was possessed and should be exorcised.

Before being crucified she had been kept shut up for several days, her hands and feet tied and without food or drink, he said.

Cornici had entered the monastery just three months before, after visiting a friend who was a nun there, police said.

As her coffin entered the church of the monastery Saturday no church bells were sounded while nuns cast distrustful glances at the strangers, including two AFP reporters, present at the ceremony.

'She can't be laid in the church because she was possesed'
Claps of thunder from an approaching storm were sometimes the only sounds to break the silence.

"This storm is proof that the will of God has been done," Daniel said.

"You see it?" said the priest, gesturing at the body, lying in an annexe and still showing the marks of the gag. One of the nuns, Sister Martha, added, "She can't be laid in the church because she was possesed."

Daniel has lived for the past four years in the isolated monastery located in the hills of one of the poorest regions of Romania, without running water or electricity.

"Over there, in your world, the people must know that the devil exists. Personally I can find his work in the gestures and speech of possessed people, because man is often weak and lets himself be easily manipulated by the forces of evil," said the bearded young priest.

"I don't understand why journalists are making such a fuss about this. Exorcism is a common practise in the heart of the Romanian Orthodox church and my methods are not at all unknown to other priests," he said.

A 34-year-old parishioner who had come to defend Daniel and gave her name as Dora, said Sister Irina " had to be punished, she had an argument with the Father during a Sunday mass and insulted him in front of the congregation."

Sociologist Alred Bulai said that corporal punishment was still commonly used in certain Romanian monasteries.

"It's happening particularly in the isolated monasteries, where the superiors have difficulty understanding the current realities and adapting themselves to modern life," Bulai said.

Since the fall of the communist regime in December 1989, the Orthodox Church, which represents 85 percent of Romania's 22

million inhabitants, is rated in many opinion polls as the most trusted institution in the country.

Vitalie Danciu, the superior of a nearby monastery at Golia, called the crucifixion "inexcusable",k but a spokesperson for the Orthodox patriarchate in Bucharest refused to condemn it.

"I don't know what this young woman did," Bogdan Teleanu said. - Sapa-AFP

Wow, who does this priest think he is? I thought they believed only God will judge people. Besides that, what part of "Thou shalt not kill" does he not understand?

Actually, it depends on the version of the bible you are reading. Some say it either way.

Murder is the correct translation. Version has nothing to do with it.

The act does fall under the "murder" category however. The guy should be crucified along with anyone that aided in the woman's death. It's just sickening.

I would say that the version does matter as there are various differences between versions and particular factions of the Church use various versions of the bible as being the truth of whatever was said.

I had friends that were free presbeterians (hard line proddy) and would only use the King James version of the Bible.

Not sure what the wording of that version is with regards to killing v murder and no interested enough to find out, but I can say that they would believe it to be whatever it says in their book...regardless of of whether someone else says their version is wrong.

Romania Monk, 4 Nuns Charged With Murder

Jun 23, 2:49 PM (ET)

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - A 23-year-old Orthodox nun - said to be possessed by devils because she shouted so much - was chained to a cross, gagged with a towel and left in a dank room at a convent for three days without food, where she died of suffocation and dehydration.

A monk and four nuns were arrested Thursday and have been charged with murder in the case, which has focused attention on the secretive convents and monasteries that dot Romania's impoverished northeast. Maricica Irina Cornici died last week in the Holy Trinity convent outside the remote village of Tanacu.

Daniel Petre Corogeanu, the red-bearded monk accused of leading the exorcism, has appeared unrepentant. He performed a funeral service for the nun on Sunday and said he was trying to take devils out of her.

Asked whether the nun was mentally ill and in need of medical help instead of exorcism, he responded: "You can't take the devil out of people with pills. You cure (possession by) the devils with fasting and prayer."

He said the nun had to be restrained because she was violent, but denied she was starved.

Corogeanu and the nuns were charged late Wednesday with aggravated murder after testifying for 11 hours to prosecutors. They were taken into custody Thursday, according to prosecutor Ovidiu Berinde, and a court in the northeast city of Vaslui ordered them held for 29 days. Their lawyer appealed the ruling.

There were angry scenes outside the prosecutor's office Wednesday in Vaslui, in one of Romania's remotest and poorest regions near the border with Moldova.

Corogeanu was jostled by shrieking residents who called for justice, saying he had brought the Orthodox Church into disrepute. Others crammed against iron railings outside the prosecutor's office, maintaining the monk and nuns were innocent.

Orthodox monasteries flourished in Romania after the 1989 fall of Nicolae Ceausescu's brutal communist regime, which suppressed religion. The secretive monasteries have attracted scores of impoverished youths, attracted by their offers of stability. Many, like Cornici, grew up in orphanages.

Cornici's death and the fact Corogeanu was ordained as a priest without having finished his theological studies have prompted the church to impose stricter rules for entering monasteries.

Amid the heated local passions surrounding the case, Corgeanu's attorney, Luana Pintilie, called Thursday for moving it to the city of Iasi, but the court there refused to take it.

"Magistrates should not have pressure from the street, locals and the media who are camped outside the prosecutor's door," Pintilie said.

On Sunday, the five suspects were indicted in connection with causing the nun's death but were not detained, pending the results of a second autopsy. Corogeanu has been suspended by the church and the convent has been closed by church authorities.

If found guilty, the monk and nuns could face 25 years in prison.

If by possessed he meant pregnant.

And by a demon he meant his baby.

This could be interesting.
