View Full Version : WoW hard locks-up my Computer

And this makes me extremely sad.
Anyone else having this problem? This has NEVER happened before, after a couple minutes in game (or even on the character selection screen) I get a hard lock-up. Have to shutdown the computer to get rid of it.
NOTHING has changed on my computer, I hadn't logged in since early Saturday morning, played last night for a couple hours, then it locked-up.
Started it up again...4-5 more times it would lock up and I'd have to shutdown again...all within a couple minutes of logging in.
Ran a bunch of diagnostic tests, cleaned up my computer, scandisk/adaware/defrag, etc...still nothing.
I'm hearing some other players are having this issue all of a sudden too on the Tech Issues forums of the WoW official site.
This is really frustrating, as I just DL'd some new add-ons I really wanted to try out. (These were added today, before the lock-ups of last night.)
Anyone have any suggestions?

UI is the problem
I have been UI free and no problems ever. I dont have any data but would swear I have even less lag than before

I would buy that...but like I said, I have changed NOTHING since Friday. (And Friday I think I only deleted some non-WoW related software.)
I probably logged about 25 hours of game play from Tues-Fri after the v1.5 patch.
Played nearly 3 hours last night without a single problem. Now, out of no where I can't have the program opened up more than 5 minutes without it hard freezing my computer. Really frustrating.

Fuck this game, fuck Blizzard...
I can't believe they've turned me into a bitter 14 yr old overweight troll with bad skin.
I've done everything possible (including deleting ALL of my custom mods and add-ons, which will NOT be a simple task DL'ing and configuring again).
I've downloaded 3 suggestions programs now. Nothing.
I've removed countless programs that may conflict.
I've opened up the tower, even though it's within 2 feet of my AC which is currently on frigid right now, and set up a fan facing my boxes innards.
I've defragged, debugged, scandisked, and every other useless Windows system tool I can possibly think of.
It's something wrong with the patch, and a possible conflict with my nVidia card, which I bought specifically to play WoW with. Great.
Oh, did I mention it ran fine for 25+ hours from last Tuesday until last night?
I also had my roommate look at it and try god knows to get it to work. He's clueless. (And he's a computer genious, far beyond anyone I know.)
So apparently it has something to do with the wonderful recent patch (atleast, others are complaining about the same thing I am on the Tech forums).

That sucks man.
Good luck fixing it up, maybe upgrade to a new (yeah, I know your Nvidia is somewhat new, but it'll fix the problem) ATI video card right now?

I agree with Hulkein.
When I first started playing WoW I had to get a new card to make it now lock my cpu.
Hopefully it'll work out.

I'm sure you've tried updating drivers and all, but just in case you haven't, I'm going to suggest that.

Yup, one of the first things I tried.
I've got a Geforce nVidia 6600, I bought the card when I purchased WoW specifically so I could play the game. (I needed a card anyways, since my comp came with an integrated one.)
Checking back on the Tech forums, apparently many others are having this problem. Really strange. But atleast my computer is much cleaner now, and I removed (and withdrew) alot of money I had still floating around at various online gaming companies.
I was looking forward to playing, got over that pretty fast. It was more the utter frustration part of it (and having it hard lockup...I mean, if I could just alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del it wouldn't be that bad.)

A few people are saying they're having the same issue with the 6800. It's really strange. Like I said...NOTHING has changed with my computer.
I played from around 5pm yesterday to 11pm, logged out once for about 20 minutes halfway through that session. Had the hard lock-up after playing for 2+ hours straight...now I can't last 5 minutes without it happening.
