A girl I work with is taking her boyfriend to NYC for his birthday. They are 23-25ish and she is interested in finding a good restaurant either Italian or seafood. Do you live around there and know of some place that they would enjoy?
Something nice and romantic vs a place to be seen. She doesn't want to spend more than a few hundred bucks on the dinner.
Any other suggestions for must sees?

Union Square Cafe.
21 East 16th Street

31-50 bucks. American/Italian, should be great food, have never heard anything bad about it.
And their desserts should be the bomb, based on the pastry chef's cookbook. [which I own]
Gramercy Tavern

Another one of the best in the city.
Coming from a culinarian anyway ;-)
If they go to one of them, I want a dining report on it.

Been a long time, but if they find themselves around West 4th Street, they're close to a great Italian resteraunt. One block down is a bakery that sells the best German chocolate cake I've ever tasted. If they like cheesecake, go to Junior's. But just for dessert.
Uh...
wtf, the closer you are to alphabet city the worse the Italian food.
Go get some shit at Tavern on the Green or the Rainbow Room. Spend that dough.

The fancy places generally aren't that great. You spend way too much for way too little food that's not nearly worth as much as you paid for it.
There's this tiny little corner pizzeria, called John & Tony's. It's on 1st avenue, right next to the 59th street bridge. They have a tiny little dining room in the back. Best chicken/veal francais/parmigiana/marsala in the city.

Half a block from Union Square is a really romantic restaurant called Candela--it's more Asian/fusion than Italian, but they have great seafood. Entrees are $20-40, so totally within her budget, even with wine or cocktails.

Edited because I found the link.

Some of the best meals I had in the City were from just walking down the street and picking out the biggest holes to dine in.
I had this chicken parm pizza that was to die for there. 3 blocks from the Marquis.

Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming. I'll give her the links and suggestions all at once. They'll be there for 4 days, so they'll have more than just the one meal to cover.
PB - 3 blocks from the Marquis doesn't mean much to me. Not like I'll be finding that place anytime soon. My husband refuses to go into the City when we go back east to visit the family. Said he worked there too many years, nothing for him to see.
