The subject of plastic bracelets was brought up in the Picture thread. I don’t know if its in reference to the bands people wear in support of one thing or another, but it reminded me of them so I made this thread.

ASYMCA (http://www.asymca.org) is the Armed Services branch of the YMCA. We designed and coded their site. On the home page is a link to a site you can get a band to support our troops.

Another band can be found at MakePovertyHistory (http://www.makepovertyhistory.org/).org. We had nothing to do with this site. Sir Geldoff is at it again 20 years later. With the likes of Lord McCartney, U2 (of course), Duke Elton and you fucking name it.

There are any number of these cause-driven plastic bracelets. Offering support to the cause of your choice is never a bad thing; albeit, the bracelets are not exactly a fashion statement. :)

I'd rather donate to breast cancer and not wear the pink bracelet.

Its an interesting phenomenon of this century. It all started with Lance Armstrong right?

I dunno.

The colors are yellow, white, blue and pink I think. Maybe

I'd honestly put my money on the phenomena being started with people who'd wear P.O.W. and M.I.A. bracelets with their loved one's names on it or some shit, but I have no grounds to back this up.

I just bought another Children's Miracle Network bracelet. Mine is red and yellow and says Miracle Worker on it.

The yellow ones that say support our troops are common here. We can even get away with wearing them in uniform.

Most of the ones I've seen in the Tampabay area are olive yum yum drab. (troop support ones) Normally teh yellow = Livestrong.

This one dude I play poker with had about 9 on one arm.. I told to wear his rainbow and BE PROUD in front of about 15 other dudes. He now wears 3 at the most at any given time. hehehe. I did look silly tho.

I'd rather give the money and not get the bracelet. I think it's getting stupid seeing people wearing like 8 of these bracelets at once. Most of the time the people just paid like 1-3 dollars at the pharmacy register for the bracelet.
I've seen them say any number of things too ... Support our troops, Livestrong, Tsunami ... and some of the stupider ones say things like: They Spinnin'!, Lust (Sorry Jihna), Flirt, Playah, Balla.

I mean come on. They're becoming a "trendy" fashion statement. They meant something at first, now they're becoming so banal. Lance Armstrong had a good idea at first, but now they've really lost their meaning.

Eh any way that people want to show their support of something (in my case specifically troops) I am all for it. Every time I see one of the magnetic yellow ribbons I am grateful and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

Sort of off topic (but still on topic)...

...if any of you are considering donating money and don't have a charity in mind, I urge you to look at Operation Smile. $250 can give a child their life back.

I wear one of the fake bracelets which cost £1.
It says 'LiveStrong' on it.

Luckily, from a few yards away it looks like something much more meaningful.
I'm so cheap it's disgusting.

Fuck, I’d be depressed if it weren’t for the fact the G8 finally forgave.

Absolutely.

We'll see though. Didn't most of the G8 make similar promises to Jubilee 2000?

I think people are more into the bands then actually donating to a charity, but that's the cynic in me.

I'm now starting to see people with the mini ribbon magnets that you put on your car bumper or trunk. It's getting ridiculous in some cases. I've seen more than one car with the back bumper filled to capacity with the mini magnets supporting any number of causes or just helping to keep Walgreens/Walmart rich since they've jumped on the bandwagon. To each their own though, to the ones with meaning, the sentiments are nice.

Hah, my mom emailed me today to encourage me to sign the petition for MakePovertyHistory (http://www.makepovertyhistory.org/).org.

I guess the apple does not fall far from the tree, though this apple got there before the tree.
