View Full Version : What was your college known for?

Alfster

Officially, my college has started to use the fact that they won the Malcolm Baldridge Award as a recruiting tool. This is not what I'm looking for here, as this is boring.

How do the other schools in your conference refer to your school?

For mine, it used to be "Come to Stout where the woman put out"

Anyhow, that's since changed. At a baseball game the other day, the visiting team had a sign that said, "Let's knock the panties out of them"

Anyhow, the whole story behind this sign is, in my opinion, hilarious.

My university is/was known for being the heart of socialism in Britain. It's also the most culturally diverse university in the UK, is rife with left wing political activists (and hippies) and is one of the top 5 social science research institutions in the world. I  it.

Mine was known as THE party school..to the point where the degrees lost alot of their value and credibility.

FSU.

T-city is sick tho.. Slap FSU, FAMU, TCC, 5 highschools and a few thousand state workers and politicians into a 5 mile radius and you have a recipe for party disaster.

William & Mary is known for being around a long time (second oldest in the US , third oldest in North America). W&M educated a lot of famous early Americans:

George Washington
Thomas Jefferson
James Monroe
John Tyler
John Marshall

It could be a strange feeling on the old campus thinking that you were in the same place that they had been 200 years ago.

My school is known for:

being on Playboy's list of party schools, more than once.
having a soriety girl kill her new born baby.
having a fraternity get banned for filming a porn video.
having several people die during fraternity initiations, including one this year that died from drinking too much water.
And for being one of the best educational institutions in the area.

Edited to add:

Oh, and Halloween getting banned in town.
Floating down the river on Labor Day and Memorial Day.
Getting Pioneer Days banned.
Getting spring break moved because of St. Patty's Day (spring break is now the week of because of the partys).

Think that's it.

So, yeah, my alma mater isn't known for much of anything on the party end of things. UIUC(U of I) definitely pwnd us in that area.

And, in all honestly...it should. It's the main campus and they get the bulk of the funds. They also have a more visible, national presence that's largely due to sports. They have outstanding academic programs too.

Only thing I regret about going to UIC is that they don't have a football team and there is virtually NO greek life.

Not much really the big promo push when I was 1st attending, that they finally gave up on. was being the 'most wired university.' Around campus generally it's known for being rated one of the most unhappy/depressed student bodies or something like that by princeton review. I'm too lazy to register to look it up exactly though.

I did my undergrad at Mount Holyoke, which is an all-girls school known for having a really beautiful campus. It's in the Five College area of Western Mass, which includes among its claims to fame the characters of Scooby Doo. Scooby Doo was created by a guy at Hampshire, and each of the major characters represents one of the local schools. Shaggy is Hampshire, Scooby is UMass, the preppy guy is Amherst, and no one can ever seem to agree which of the girls is Smith, and which is Mount Holyoke.

I'm working on my PhD at American University right now, which doesn't seem to be known for much of anything other than having a really crappy library.
