Early Wednesday morning, the Cybertruck reportedly jumped a curb in Piedmont, crashed into a tree, and burst into flames. One person was pulled from the vehicle by a person in the vehicle behind them, according to Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers.

Authorities were alerted to the crash by an iPhone within the Cybertruck automatically alerting dispatchers, as well as neighbors who saw the flames rising from the vehicle.

That seems to happen a lot. An EV hits a tree and bursts into flames. It's like 1960s and 1970s teevee shows where there would be car chase near the end of the episode, and the bad guy's car would swerve off the road and into a ditch and blow up.

I'm starting to think we should look more closely at hydrogen powered vehicles. Trump, quoted below, says hydrogen vehicles are unsafe. Who do you think has been telling him that? It makes sense that they would be unsafe -- remember the Hindenburg -- but that sensible conclusion is not backed up by evidence. Hydrogen vehicles seem to be safer than electric vehicles.

I heard Toyota has recently done some amazing development with hydrogen fuel cells. Their cars use electrolysis to break hydrogen and oxygen apart, which requires energy. Then they put them back together, which produces heat and electrical energy, some of which powers more rounds of electrolysis and some of which moves the vehicle. The excess oxygen produced by this process is exhausted into the atmosphere.

You'd drive home, fill up you tank from the water hose, also known as H2O, and motor around while electrolysis does its thing. It's not quite that simple, of course, because we can only get about half as much energy from electrolysis as we put into it. That's not a bad ratio for renewable energy. You still will occasionally have to fill a separate tank with hydrogen. And right now hydrogen is not cheap to produce, even though it's everywhere. It's possible that about the time everybody starts buying EVs, the technology to produce cheap hydrogen will make EVs obsolete. Funding hydrogen production research was part of the Inflation Reduction Act.

The former president’s rally speeches have recently been filled with attacks on hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles, which are primarily made in Japan and South Korea, as he pledges to bolster the US automotive industry.
