I'm sad to see the events on these boards.

I was considering coming back to this game, having stopped playing for a few years. While it seems that a few of you have good intentions, it seems like the vast majority of you are quite chidlish. I spent a few hours last night skimming the archives of these boards, and it seems to me that you people aren't happy unless you have someone to bash on or to make feel smaller than yourself.

This isn't the gemstone community that I was used to. What happened to the days of Celtic and Ardwen roleplaying in TSSW for hours, or Celtic trying to take over the bank...

This is really sad people.

If you find some falseness in my claim take the case examples of:

Sean, Lycain, Dionisus, Xcalibur, Bob, and now it seems this Chadj fellow.

There were others, but I mainly viewed threads with large number of views overall.

Quite sad everyone - I wanted to come back and have fun and be in good company. It seems that all of those people have left, for a good reason.

Check the role-playing folder out for other examples. Mostly it's just easier to post a log of you killing some foe than it is to distill good roleplay into an enjoyable and easy to read log.

Come on, now. It really isn't all that bad. Aside from peam and Bob jumping all over me (at length) for accidentally bumping an old topic I've found GSIV to still have a great player community.

I'm not actually trying to talk you into playing GemStone again, I just disagree with your assessment of the community.

The current death penalties are so weak that they do nothing to hinder enjoyment of anything. I love them.

Khaladon is still an SGM, I haven't heard of Belcor or Contra though. There is a post in the announcements section of the GS boards with a list of all current GMs and their position/role.

Times change, seasons change, and people move on. If you judge the game by this forum then you're in effect judging a book by its cover. Log in the game and see for yourself if it is something you'd still enjoy. If not then move along, but dont blame your dissatisfaction or feeling of loss and yearning for the past on those who post or share on the boards, its not logical and unrealistic.

Gemstone certainly is not the same game it was when I started playing back in 98; but I dont feel its worse now than it was then. Quite the opposite in fact. Furthremore, I find that my game play has been enriched by some of the information and experiences that I've seen posted here, with much more freedom than what could be posted on the official forums. If I see behavior displayed that I find undesirable then I use the posts as a roadmap to play my characters in different areas as well as different ways - thus avoiding the childish behavior as well as the childish characters.

What you do is your decision, but lying back and lamenting that the past is dead and the PC community is responsible for it is as irresponsible as some of the behavior you accuse the participants of the PC forums.

If I were you, I'd give the game a try and see how you feel about it after a month or so. Personally, I don't play anymore and haven't for many years. It's just not the game I remember and has nothing to offer me in its current state. Things might prove to be very different for you, however. :)

As far as these boards go, this is where people come to let their hair down a bit. Many don't play GemStone anymore, but have formed friendships for others who post here, current players and previous players alike. The boards don't appeal to everyone, nor are they meant to do so. However, if you give them a chance you can see a lot of good things here. It's not all about bashing. Sometimes, it's about support, or friendship, or advice, or just talking together through this medium.

Reading our TOS will give you a pretty good idea of what's allowed and what's not allowed. It's not always possible for the boards' staff to see everything. We do, however, try to keep the boards in line with our TOS. Any post that you find objectionable can be reported to the moderator of the topic in question (and to the administrators) through the Report Post function. This will give us a chance to take a look at the post in light of TOS, and to answer any questions you might have about why what is said may, or may not, be allowed.

The game has changed a good deal since I played. For me, the changes made it a lot less enjoyable. However, I wouldn't take the posts on these boards to be indicative of how people play the game. They're, for the most part, not. These boards allow people to say things they can't say on the official boards, and complain (with names) about some of the things done in-game. It's a way to blow off steam, for the most part.

Give it a try and see how it goes for you. Since you've played before, it won't take you long to figure out if it's the game you're hoping to find, or not. If it isn't, don't expect to find much better amongst the larger offerings.

You might try Armaggedon. That's very roleplay intensive, and snerts aren't tolerated there. It's not for me, but some have found refuge there. :)

Have you considered not reading the BOARDS and PLAYING the game that you once loved instead? How people respond on a message board is not indicative of how people behave in RL, let alone in a game.

Sure people tend to point out the bad more than the good... like you did by blanketing the entire gaming populace because of what you saw here. You didn't even try reading more of the general, gem and roleplaying folders to see the good in the game. You aimed towards the bad. That was your own fault, not ours. Just because we focused more on expressing our feelings and beliefs about CERTAIN people who play doesn't mean there isn't good in it.

Go play the game and leave your judging for the people you run into the game AFTER interacting with them. Don't blame us for not doing something you claim to like doing. It was your decision to come here, after all.
