Don't pay with cash, only use silvers in game and use the EXCHANGE verb. Problem solved. I think most people forget about using EXCHANGE these days.

Last few times I've picked up something in game for silvers the owner just drops the item in my hands and expects me to drop silvers in their pockets. Thankfully most people I've dealt with are decent and do pay, but you should always use that EXCHANGE verb to help protect yourself.
