View Full Version : Bittorrent Any Good?

After getting sick of Kazaa and Bearshare being complete pieces of good-for-nothing-but-spyware shit I stumbled on another program called Bittorrent. I went to download it but it requires a membership fee.
Does anyone use this and is it worth a shit as a P2P program? If it's as good as they boast then I'll probably sign up, but I'm skeptical right now. Bearshare Pro promised all the same things but I still get the same shitty download speeds, bogus files, etc.

Don't pay for anything, that's a scam. You should be able to get the client for free at www.bittorrent.com.

or do a search for azureus that's a good client.

Azureus or BitComet, those are good torrent programs..
Then you can go download crazy at www.torrentspy.com
You NEVER pay for P2P stuff.
I had the worst spyware (almost virus strength/danger) I ever experienced from Kazaa.
The only thing that even nearly topped Kazaa for infections, was hardcore porn.

Thanks for the info. I went to www.bittorrent.com and downloaded it and ran the install file. A few seconds later I get a popup saying "Bittorrent successfully installed. To use, visit any website that supports it" or something like that.
So now my question is: How do I know if a site supports it, and where do I find them? I assumed this was a standalone P2P program like Kazaa, but apparently not.
And now I'm confused :(

Goto www.techtv.com and you'll find the info you want.
Nevermind I just check that link and it is now almost as useless as the new G4 format. Garbage.

azureus is what I use.
I did the kazaa/bearshare thing for a while - but for the past few months it's been nothing but bittorrent.
Downloaded all of season 4 for smallville (HDTV quality) before it's out on DVD (my girl is in love with the show).
Also downloaded all kinds of recent games and movies I didn't feel like buying (Harold & Kumar, Girl Next Door)

I just downloaded Azureus. The first time I ran it it brought up some configuration thing. I'm on the NAT / Server part but when I test the default port, I get "Testing port 6881 ... NAT Error."
I know next to nothing about ports and things like that. How do I find out what the correct port # is? Or does it even matter?
Thanks.

I get a little pop-up occasionally yapping about ports. I should probably look at them - but the downloads work fine (and fast enough) without dealing with them.
Are you able to download anything? (I'd test it with something that everyone has, like a popular song)

Yeah when I try to download I get a little popup saying
ERROR
Failed to establish listener for incoming data. Check firewall settings are permitting java(w).exe to act as a 'server'
The only firewall I have running is built into my router, and it never gave me any shit before, so I'm guessing I just need to find the right port number, which I have no idea how to find.

Where do you find decent .torrents now? I got pissed at the bullshit about 6 months ago.
Edit to state the obvious (once again =P) Looking for .torrent sources you have experience with and trust.

I gave up on the port thing with Azureus for now and downloaded BitComet. Some files don't connect, and the ones that do get really shitty download rates, like 10-15 KB/sec.
Is that normal for this program to be this slow, or is it something on my end?

My preferred P2P client is LimeWire. Way better than Kazaa and I could never, ever get BT to work.

The only link you'll ever need (http://isohunt.com/)

Try opening ports 6881-6889 on your router (those are the standard BT communication ports), that dramatically increased the quality of my downloads.

For BTs use isohunt, non BT I use Shareaza and Soulseek.

As for speeds, it really depends on the torrent. Number of seeds, their uploads, etc. You need to be patient with BT, sometimes it takes a while, and sometimes it will never get that fast.
I don't really know any good BT sites anymore, but be careful. Sites such as surpnova are watched by ISPs and they will bust you for downloading, mostly just to look good for the RIAA or MPAA.
