Announced today at Simucon. Ebon Gate will have new grounds this year.
Also:
There will be no games for silvers to earn currency.
The new currency will be soul shards, which are generated via SIMUCOIN PURCHASE.
Soul shards can be earned via Trick or Treat, or some new game TBA (which both will cost simucoins to play.)

I've have honestly grown to hate EG since they introduced alt currencies. They fucked with digging over the years by making it convoluted and cumbersome with the constant gift tiers they would put in place and remove every year, they put (some) shops behind alt currencies and the alt currency they use doesn't really leave you with wanting to spend it on anything because the stuff they have to buy with the alt currency isn't worth your time to earn it.
It's just another venue I don't care about anymore.

Weird that they have been draining so much silvers from the economy lately and now remove a silver drain from EG.

They have, a couple of times, actually made digging give a return over what you spent on shovels. You weren't making silvers hand over fist, but you were making a profit. For example, if you spent 1mil on shovels, you'd actually make all that back and about a 20% return on top of it, so that 1mil you spent, you'd make around 200k back over the 1mil you spent.
Both times I saw it happen it didn't last too long, maybe lasted for about a week before Wyrom found out about it and they adjusted the returns people were seeing. Now you generally make back around 75-80% of what you spent.
Digging wasn't a big silver drain, but it was something. Now it sounds like they're hoping more folks will continue to be dumb and spend real cash on crap.

Is there anything to actually be excited about? Also RIP those forever shovels.

As much as everything else in Gemstone, I think it hinges on how you manage your expectations. For at least the last 6 years or so, EG has been a reliable way for non-premium subscribers to get general alterations and fluff item unlocks done. Any type of slot machine mechanic (digging, games, etc.) will always attract a large amount of people, but leave most people feeling disappointed, and a few people overjoyed. At the very least, the auto-flarer is worth generating alt currency for. At least they split the price of admission into the 3 tiers of games, shops, and services, that way you only have to pay for access to what you want.

Same. Haven't been excited about EG for years. It used to be the big year end event, but with several perma-paid-festivals per year it just lost all appeal to me.

As far as I know, the main part of Morannon's fortifications in this game is the Gate, which covers the only torrential route into Mordor that large troops can take.
