As posted by CNN:
"The state's House of Representatives voted 85-55 to approve a bill that would forbid sexy cheers and give the Texas Education Agency authority to punish schools that allow "overtly sexually suggestive" routines at football games and other events."

http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/05/05/cheerleaders.law.reut/index.html

First the US legislature attempted to intervene with Terry Schiavo. Next the US legislature jumped into the MLB drug problem. Now a state (my state) legislature has decided to get inolved with something that should be handled by a local school principal or district superintendant.

Do we not give our politicians enough to do? Sometimes I'm amazed at what they respond to/focus on and what they let slip by/ignore.
You can substitute embarrased for amazed in the above sentence if you so choose. :(

I think it's sad that it came to that.

Sexually suggestive actions, things, etc..are completely suggestive
Some people have "food" fetishes. Does that mean a painting or photograph of a banana resting in a bowl of peaches is sexually suggestive, if 99% of the population sees nothing but a bowl of fruit, where the people with the fetish see something else?

Honestly, I think there's a line to be drawn in certain circumstances.

Who's to blame? the cheerleaders and choreographer or the person who is aroused by the event?

When I was in highschool, yeah, cheerleaders were hot, but any sexual feelings/ideas came from my mind, wasn't the fact that the cheerleaders were moving or dressed in a way to provoke or suggest someting to me.

Anyway, hope my point gets across.

That is the dumbest thing I've heard in a LONG time. Even worse than expelling the 3rd grade kid that threw rubber bands at his teacher and they called it "assault".

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Apparently the school was not handling it so now they will try too. NFL cheerleaders doing the grind motions/sexual motions are one thing <I have never seen them do such but they may> are one thing. A teen doing it with the wearing almost nothing outfits they wear is a completely different thing altogether.
Do I believe it should be handled by the school? most definitely but if they aren't then someone has to.
Good thing being on the cheerleading team is optional then Huh. You act as if we force this kids into these situations.
More victorian sexuallity forced on the people by a cold-war catholic mentality.
Who gets to define "overtly sexual"? This should be interesting.
Who said anything about forcing them to be a cheerleader?
This is what pisses me off:
1. The principal, after hearing complaints, failed to act on them appropriately.
2. The superintendant, after hearing more complaints, failed to act appropriately.
3. The fact that instead of using the appropriate channels, the Texas legislature decides to institue legislation instead of thumping that particular school super or principal with either powers given to them through the board of education or through their favorite lever - the media.
When will folks start being accountable for their jobs/responsibility and quit waiting for someone else to step in and do it for them?
Oh wait...
"He complained of cheerleaders "shaking their behinds, breaking it down," but the proposal does not define what constitutes suggestive cheering."
A well thought out and informative proposal with no clear definition of what should and should not be allowed. :rolleyes:
You're right, my bad. I thought you were saying the children shouldn't be doing it for their OWN sake, not the distraction of 15 year boys that could get a boner staring at the wall. Sorry.
Shaking one's behind is clearly immoral. Tempting another toward lust is of the devil. Such actions must be purged in the fires.
My thoughts too. It's okay to have people getting shot and killed on television, but heaven forbid a nipple pop out. Who cares if some cheerleaders shake their ass? I thought that was the whole point of cheerleading. :P
It's harsh, but part of me sees that some guidelines should be in place.
The cheer sqaud at my highschool had from 14 to 18 year olds. It's one thing for an 18 yo to do some of the 'routines' they did, quite another for a 14yo. So they either need to be more strict on ages, or have routines appropriate for all age groups in the squad.
Seeing a 13/14yo kid doing some of that stuff that squads are doing these days is not my cup of tea.
:shrug:
but thats highschool. Take college and let them do what they want. NFL well......... games on baby!
This thread is too sexy, someone should censor it...
The principal and superintendent were in the wrong for not acting on the situtation without Congressional interferance.
State and Federal governments though need to re-examine their priorities. Why is illegal immigration taking a backseat to sexually suggestive cheerleading? They are both important in their own repectes, but this is pretty dumb.
That's fucking dumb.
Better have them start forcing Britney Spears and Christina Agulera to wear more clothes and stop dancing, because clearly, anything sexually suggestive is the devil.
No, no one has to.
I have to disagree with you there Chadj. I dont think many parents want to watch their daughters (JV or Varsity) stand out in front of hundreds of people and perform moves that are better suited for women dancing around a pole. Not to mention just what kind of ideas that would put into the head of the local pedophile who happens to have a front row seat to shows like that. Cheerleading routines can be motivating and show lots of spirit without showing lots of sexual innuendos. Therefore I do fault first the cheerleading sponsor for giving them or allowing a routine like that to be performed to begin with. Then the principal, then the superintendant...
Dance routines can be classy without being sexually suggestive... same with cheerleading routines... same with TV shows, same with movies. It just takes a broader mind to see it. Not that I'm discounting sex - because I'm not, its just that there's more to life than just that.
I clearly do not live in Texas, so I do not know what the cheerleading is like there. However, from my own observations up here in Canuckistan, it's not that bad. Sure, there's some sexually suggestive stuff, but the girls joined on their own, and most had/required parental consent. I guess it's different down in Texas, cause no one complains up here :).
:lol:
Yea, cheerleading here in Texas is its own animal - much like Texas highschool football is. We've even had a cheerleading mom put a contract out on another cheerleader because her daughter got beat out of the squad...
