music suggestions

I've been working on and off for a few years on a project for my nephews and niece to give them as they graduate HS (still ~5 years before the oldest gets it)... so far it's mostly family history, my own story, things I wish I'd learned earlier, general life advice, etc., but I also want to include suggestions for music they may not have been exposed to growing up that's worth checking out (it never ceases to amaze me some of the songs/performers that 20somethings have never heard of).

Anyway, I don't wanna limit it to just genre's I like so I'm throwing the question out there for suggestions from whoever... if you were making a list of great songs/albums/groups/performers from before 2010, what/who would you include? No genre is off the table.
