View Full Version : What's the secret to heirloom search bounties?

So what's the deal with these things? Is the heirloom going to be in a specific room? Is it in a random room but you have to keep searching a new room until you find it? Or is it like bandit bounties where you can just keep going back and forth between the same two rooms and it will spawn eventually?

It's a specific room which I'm assuming is chosen at random when the bounty is started.

So the best way to find them is to just go through every room and search?

No sense in backtracking it seems.

Yeah, if you searched a room once, you're wasting your time searching it a 2nd time.

Sounds groovy. Thank ya.

Per la wiki

This task is assigned by a town guard and is one in which an item is lost in a specific area. To complete it, one must kneel with empty hands and search in a specific area. The item is not in a specific room before you start searching, so any room you start to search in will do. However, staying in a single room is ineffective. Furthermore, any rooms searched back-to-back do not count, thus a minimum of 3 total rooms are required for a loop (although it is possible to find an heirloom on the first attempt in a new room). However, it has been explicitly stated by a GM that searching several rooms over and over again (even if they 'count') is not a good strategy; the best strategy is to search as many rooms as possible without repeating. Training in Perception helps a lot for this task, and it is likely that the spell Presence does as well. Rewards are based on the level of creature that caused the item to be lost.

Heirloom bounties are not the same everywhere. In the Rift for example, you just find them on a critter. You just keep killing the critters till the heirloom shows up.

Even with Search Heirlooms the critters drop them? intriguing

False. You can’t search a room twice in a row, but I’ve definitely found an heirloom in a room I’ve searched before.

I've always ignored heirloom bounties. Maybe they're like bandits and you can search the same 2 rooms back and forth? Anyone try that?

I'm saying that heirloom bounties where I hunt aren't search bounties.

This would suggest that it's just an RNG roll that is taken in the specified area. There could be a reset timer for a roll taken in each room before another roll is accepted.

Some GM discussed this awhile back. For room search heirlooms you have a % chance to find the loot in any of the relevant rooms, and a search triggers a cooldown for that room. Searching a room in cooldown results in decreased odds, so the recommended method is to circulate searches among rooms in the search area.

The loot based heirloom bounties are terrible and need to be reworked. I think I went 40 creatures before finding a looted heirloom once.

This would literally take less than 10 minutes to fix. Just edit the % chance.

There are two types. Rift allows for both, just not at cap. I've had the room one before, on Plane 3 for sure (when like level).

Hehe, as a rogue, heirloom bounties are my favorite and I will even take them over bandits if I use a boost. Mug FTW!

I agree with this statement. You can definitely find an heirloom on a SEARCH task in a room where you've already searched. I usually search 3 different rooms back and forth until I find the heirloom. Not sure where I picked up that idea, but it's what I've done for as long as I can remember. It seems like it always pops us within 10 tries for me.

LOOT heirloom versus SEARCH heirloom depends on the creature it is attached to. The task language includes a creature. As in, a townsperson was scared by a forest troll/greater orc/mountain lion, and dropped their heirloom. If the creature normally carries loot (kobold, orc, troll), the task will be kill a creature and LOOT them to find the heirloom. If the creature doesn't carry loot (bears, lions, pumas), the task will be to SEARCH a room in the area where the creature spawns.

You may not remember, but was the creature you hunted in this case 5 levels below you? Or maybe even more if you had tasks set to easier? The reason I ask is that anecdotally, it seems to me that when the creature I'm hunting is higher level, the heirloom seems to pop up in the first 10 creatures. If the creature I'm hunting is lower level, it takes more in the 20-30 range.
