Who else is playing this?

I’ve been trying to kill this damn bushwhacking son of an ass eater Royal bitch nugget Knight Loretta the cheap fudge-packing dickless boss that he is. I died…a lot. I had him down to one swing left of health but ran out of flasks. One of those stupid glinstone pebbles got me as I was going in for the kill. Unfortunately my PC is in my bedroom along with my wife, and the Irish temper got the better of me. I’m done for the night.

So far I love this game, and I also HATE this game. It’s a genuine FromSoftware experience…

It's not super obvious what to do or where to go in order to progress the main story of this game. I’m sure now that was their intent. I’m not that far into the game but did a good bit of just wandering around like you described.

Great games so far. Using a magical swordsman build so far, though magic has been a bit of a cheese at times. The game is nowhere near as hard as your typical Souls game.

I’m a strength build 2handing the Zweihandler at the moment. My experience thus far is at least the bosses (that I can’t stagger) feel Souls like in difficulty. I played DS1 and that was brutal. Never played DS2 or Bloodborne. DS3 I went pure caster intelligence on my first play-thru. Ranged attacks made things easier.

DS1 remains my mainstay and the fight of Ornstein and Smough remains the single most difficult challenge I've ever faced in a video game.

What do you think of the damage scaling on strength weapons? You're losing out on shield counters big time, but gain a big potential in increasing your damage by weapon upgrades. Your Zweihandler or a bleed weapon should take you a big chunk of the game.

I’m personally choosing to set aside political differences in my responses to him on this particular topic. It’s an apolitical fantasy video game. We’ll see how that plays out….

So far as a filthy casual, I’m pleasantly surprised. I consider myself rather hard to please with modern games. This game actually lives up to its hype, which is a rare thing these days. If you like both Elder Scrolls & Dark Souls, I would recommend this to you with high confidence you would enjoy it. If you don’t like both of those titles, you probably won’t.

Same and agreed.

With open world RPGs I tend to enjoy more of the side quests and such more than I do advancing the main story, so it kinda works for me. For whatever reason I generally play to be over leveled / geared for the main plot progression. Once I’m done with that prime narrative I’m most often done with the game.

One thing that made itself obvious to me in contrast to something like Skyrim…while the world is massive there is a ton of content in every area. It’s not like you have to travel a long distance to find a new dungeon / interesting NPC / mini boss / whatever. The developers really went deep on this game, kinda to the point that it can feel overwhelming at times.

The entire western half of the continent, the south eastern island area and the storm area before the castle have a ton of reasonably difficult areas to level and gear up at. If you're feeling brave, there is an area called Caelid to the east of the lake with the undead boatsman. It's insanely difficult, but there's gear and equipment that you can find, specially for a magic user that'll really boost your early game

Before I answer that keep in mind I’m like level 45ish or so and not that far into the game yet. I have something like 32 strength, 25 vitality, 20 endurance and my weapon is +7.

So far so good I guess but not sure what to compare to on damage. I’m getting decent / better with the weapon move set. If I can break poise on an enemy, I do really well. If I can’t then the fight gets difficult especially fast moving bosses. I need to raise my own poise with better armor (endurance / equipment load) and I think it will get better. Haven’t quite mastered the timing / frames for hyper-armor.

I played a lot of DS1 back in the day and PVPd. Shields were useless for PVP on that game so I got used to dodge rolling for defense, and took the same approach with this game. I understand Elden Ring has a new shield block mechanic that gives you like a stagger, but that doesn’t interest me much. We’ll see how this goes but I may change the build and experiment more at higher levels. Haven’t done any PvP or CoOp yet.

Edit: I always felt the 4 Kings boss gave me this most trouble in DS1. I still have PTSD from the first time I got to Sen’s Fortress, and almost gave up on the game at that point the first time I played it.

Yeah overall the game is much easier if you make use of summonings and upgrade your spirit ashes. Sorcery in particular just melts everything. You can cheese stuff a bit with mounted combat or just running through areas. I'm also doing a mage-knight build for the Dark Moon Greatsword, around level 40 atm.

+7 is damned respectable, the Zweihandler is honestly just gonna wreck pretty hard, especially on horseback. Without spoiling much, if you haven't done the questline there is a really good halberd to be found in the Weeping Peninsula, if I remember correctly it drops at +8. A pretty decent heavy sword is obtained from the boss there too.

I'm with you on Sens Fortress, mostly due to the utter unfairness of some of the trap/snake combos. Anor Londo and it's painted guardians while high above the floor of the chapel was a massive challenge for me due to heights.

As for Elden Ring, I'm rocking a pretty tight +8 epee and use the scholar enchantment for magic damage. I've got 40 int, 23 mnd and some additional points in dex/str, though not much as the Prisoner had great overall stats for a magical swordsman. If a boss is being too cheesy, I'll throw a few rock slings augmented with the meteorite staff their way.

I couldn't get into any of those games either despite knowing that they're good games, mainly because I don't have the patience anymore, but I can't quit playing Elden Ring.

The biggest difference is Dark Souls is linear. This game being open world, if you hit a wall, just go pwn somewhere else for a while and level up, then come back and steamroll.

Also if you get bored with grinding regular mobs for xp, do this:

https://youtu.be/wNwmYIlF7M0

Just getting to the area itself is like a quest of its own, despite not being an actual quest.

I think I spent my first few days just wandering around randomly and still never ran out of stuff to do.

I'll probably end up playing through this game a bunch of times on different characters and never have the same experience twice.

I like ER a lot, it seems like the best Soulsborne game to me. I've been doing a melee only dex build with Bloodhound's Fang and the hook claws and it's pretty fun, just beat Loretta last knight and found her one of the easier bosses so far.

As far as cheesing bosses on horseback, personally I've found fighting bosses on horse to be harder than on foot, at least in terms of hitting them consistently and more than once.

Fallingstar Beast/Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast, Starscourge Radahn and Godskin Apostle have been the hardest bosses for me so far, but I've still got some to go.

If you're talking player summons, I'd almost say they're more a hindrance than a benefit for Margit since a lot of people rush to get there and are underleveled and unprepared.

Yeah the horse is great for fast hit and run attacks though. If you can get your attacks lined up you don't have to deal with a lot of bullshit.

I haven't used any player summons, but the ash summons have been really useful. Lone Wolf ashes and a little bit of leveling made the Margit fight a joke in the early game.

Fair enough for the hit and run, but it's definitely slower for repeat swings and trying to get a bleed in from what I've seen, so I've pretty much just given up on the horse for boss stuff. I tried Radahn for a couple hours on horseback, staying super irritated, but when I switched it was much easier on foot. Radahn's stupid little mini-horse seems to run him around much faster and go much further away if you're on horse, he stays in range where you can get at him to attack if you're on foot, idk.

I only considered buying this because Bethesda is dragging their feet on the next Elder Scrolls, but then realized that it would just be another game I buy in case I ever want to play it that would never get played. :( I wish I could get into games like I used to. I had kids and that part of me just died, I think. It does look cool. Very Elder Scrolls-ish.

I had no plans on playing this game at all just because I didn't have the patience for Dark Souls and all that. The open world part makes it a lot more flexible and chill though.

I figured I'd have the same results as you despite having no kids...buy it and either never play it, or play it for like an hour and then forget about it forever after, because that's what happens with me with most games now. Instead, I just got sucked in right off the bat, and haven't been able to stop ever since, and all without having that "my life is being consumed" vibe like when you get sucked into a new MMO and the rest of the world ceases to exist.

I'll eventually get back to playing Lost Ark. One day. Probably.

Yeah, PC. Once in a while I'll get some brief mild stuttering, but it hasn't had any effect on gameplay and only lasts a couple seconds, and that's with all settings maxed. There was some issue on release that was causing some systems to use its integrated video, but that's been fixed, and I didn't have any issues then either.

All the complaints I've been hearing are either massively overblown or I've just been lucky.

PS4 version runs like shit, PS5 version runs at 45-60 fps in "performance" mode and I'm not sure about in "presentation" mode or whatever it's called but I wanna say somewhere in the 40s.

That one was like $200 or so at GameStop and couldn’t justify it. I’m not a pro gamer.

I just got a regular wired USB one made by a third party but officially licensed to Microsoft for like $25. It works great for Elden Ring. I’m sure it’s substandard for a competitive FPS but I don’t play those.

Be ready to die. A lot.

Also be ready to quit after 15 minutes if you plan to go in mashing buttons with no patience or strategy.

If you get stuck on something, go somewhere else for a while, then come back and steamroll. Nothing has to be done in any sort of order.

Other than that, don't forget to get the horse early on. You'll probably walk right into it anyway.

Don't hug that chick on the bed either. You'll get a 5% HP debuff that you probably won't notice, until you toss the item she gives you after hugging.

Methias makes a good point. Combat in this game is methodical. It’s all about range & timing. There are lots more components, but it’s not a game where you mash random buttons. If you swing a big sword with a heavy attack there is a long animation. Explore what works best for you, but think of the combat being like Gemstone with RT after each action. Good luck!

If you swing a big sword with a heavy attack there is a long animation. Explore what works best for you, but think of the combat being like Gemstone with RT after each action. Good luck!

TLDR version: Fight bosses like you're playing Zelda and not Dynasty Warriors.

there was some knight on a horse like 5 minutes in after that one dude instant killed me to move the story line. Ran right around him. Killed a couple people, some zombies and some bats (maybe?) and just kind walking around. A horse would be sweet but I am enjoying just kind of exploring. Just entered like stormfoot catacombs and "excited" to see what waits for me

Those catacombs are the first real taste of Dark Souls other than the knight who wafflestomps early game

The big guy on the horse is a lesson on how you don't need to fight everything you run into. There are some giant guys later on who offer more courses on running away.

If you want the horse, and more importantly the ability to level up, follow the light trails to sites of grace around the ruins where guys patrol, and a chick will creep up on you and make you an offer you really shouldn't refuse. Then when you rest at a site of grace you have the ability to level up.

A couple things about Elden Ring:
- most of your damage will come from upgrading a weapon/focus rather than stat scaling, so prioritize upgrades over an extra point in STR/DEX/whatever
- armor isn't super important, so wear whatever you want or what looks coolest as long as you're not encumbered
- level up vigor for easy mode

People say armor isn’t important and wear for style, but my experience is that it makes a way bigger difference in Elden Ring than it did DS3.

The damage reduction is one thing, but the poise value is significant. As a strength build swinging two handed (no block), if I’m in light armor every little poke sends me into stagger mode.

Those fat rolls can be absolutely brutal though.

Some armor, like the spell blade set, gives passive bonuses. That’s my favorite armor so far.

Yes I have been running away from plenty of things. Wanted offensive casting spells so am now an astrologer and got my horse. Trying to figure out close range casting. Fast things pummel me due to my low health but I am enjoying it.

I’ll have to do some research on where or how to find new spells

You find spells from merchants or out in the world. One of the first sorcery vendors you can get is to the SE of your initial starting point and east of the Agheel Lake grace point in some ruins. You'll have to enter the ruins and defeat a miniboss before getting access to her. She sells the Carian Slicer (a fast swinging sword sorcery) and Glintblade Phalanx (homing daggers that hover around you) sorceries.

If you want a sword, try the Carian Knight's sword. It will take a fair amount of legwork to get, but it's worth it.

Noted, thank you!! Stupid question but I can still cast other spells while holding that sword right?

Unfortunately no. It just scales well with INT and has a skill called 'Carian Resplendence' or something which is like a vertical slash version of the Carian Greatsword sorcery.

In time you will get used to swapping between your glintstone staff for casting sorceries and using a decent int-scaling weapon to conserve your FP. You can try having your staff in your left hand and sword in the right if you don't mind toggling between your staff and a shield instead.

You can still hold a staff in your left hand and cast with that, just hit L1 instead of R1. Not sure if bonuses work any differently in left hand, but you can still cast with left hand while holding a weapon in your right.

Later on there's a staff called Staff of Lost that gives a 30% damage bonus to "invisibility" spells, which has nothing to do with actual invisibility (works on Night Comet, Night Shard, and maybe a few other spells) but anyway...there's another staff (Azure's Glintstone Staff) you can get that will speed up your casting time by a good bit. You can hold that in your right hand to cast with and hold Staff of Lost in your left hand and still get the 30% damage bonus while also getting the faster casting.

I could not figure out the one Ash of War I did find when I had my prophet (astronomer now). Ill have to figure out how those work.

Use L2 for your ash of war. Certain weapons allow for the ash of war to be customized. The moonveil katana has the most powerful one I’ve found so far.

Sword of Night and Flame, even post-nerf, still hits really hard too. It has a noticeably slower wind up time vs. moonveil katana, but is still great when you have the time to wind it up, and both can be gotten pretty early without much trouble iirc.

I'm almost done with NG+2 and I've done it all with Bloodhound's Fang (well, dual wielding them in NG+). Much better range and bleed than sword of night & flame and you don't have to be a katana nerd or even bother with the weapon ash if you don't want to. Also about the easiest OP weapon to get.

That looks pretty nifty, I'm gonna go check it out after work.

Ghiza's Wheel is pretty cool, has a good look and does even more bleed than the Fang, but doesn't scale as well. It does have a cool weapon art though.

Nerds are always drooling over the Moonveil. Let's have a look.

It's pretty tough to replace. It's not the hardest hitting weapon out there, but when you factor in how fast it is compared to other stuff, I'd assume the DPS would come out way ahead of most things.

And it scales with INT, which automatically means it rules.

I use the Greatsword (colossal sword) two-handed with Barbaric Roar as my ashes of war. It changes the strong attacks to some pretty fast and useful combos.

Once I get to NG+, I think I’ll definitely play some more. I’m sure there is a ton of stuff I missed and will respec into a different build to make use of some of those cool boss weapons and ashes of war.

Bingo. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m only leveling INT.

I’m only like 30% through the game. I’ve beaten 3 major bosses and not sure what I’m gonna do next.

Lots of videos out there of broken builds, but since 1.04 I've tried the build in this video and it is holy shit ridiculously broken, at least for bosses.

I'm done with NG+5, did all endings and I'm level 310. Respecced a little bit for 80 arcane to accomodate the build and it absolutely deletes bosses. Just ridiculous. My DEX/STR dual wield Bloodhound's Fang build still does just fine, but this build vs bosses is just on another level.
