Today is going to be Staerins last day in Gemstone for a while. He's leaving for Air Force basics this evening.
I now he isn't a big socialite, so a lot of people might not know him, but I thought it would be nice to wish him luck and send him off feeling good anyway.
Good luck, Carrot. I'm going to miss you. Who am I going to argue with in the mornings now?
Hurry back, and you better remember your promise.

Good luck :)
I hear the air force has the best food and easiest work outs, so you made the right choice.

Any knowledge will help
I want to go in for satilite comms.

Join a real branch. I'd wish you luck but if you need luck to make it through Air Force basic well.....
Actually all kidding aside I'm glad you decided to serve. We are all on the same team (just some of us are varsity  )

The Air Force was a good choice for me. If you're still deciding what service to pick, ask yourself this-
Do you want to go somewere they develope your mind first and your body second? (Anticor was right, AF basic is physically pretty easy.) Do you want to go somewhere where it's closer to even and you'll travel more? (Navy) Or do you want to go with the "body then mind" type and join a service that would let Gomer Pyle in if he can shoot straight enough and do what he's told?
You'll have to deal with people thinking you're not as tough as other types of troops but don't worry about it. You'll get out with a usefull skill, not be a trained killer that has to ask "Want fries with that?" 50 times a day.
No offense Anticor, I'm sure you'll do fine... :moon:

Are you kidding me?
Just because we are stronger, faster, and can shoot straighter doesn't mean we are lacking mentally. I've done Joint ops and I gotta say that across the board the intel is the same in all branches we just look better and train harder  I don't even want to dredge up which branch requires the highest GT score to get in.... well hell it's the Marines heh. Don't hate.
And regardless of what branch, you'll have a ball, learn alot, and I'm proud to stand beside you (unless you're a shit bird then I want to beat your ass because people will associate me with you!)

Don't forget if he wear glasses or contacts he's got those great BCG's (birth control glasses they are so ugly no girl will talk to you  ) I had them puppies I could start fires with them heh.
First two days of bootcamp sucked for us not sure about Zoomies. We never saw daylight always inside doing paperwork, haircuts, general issue, etc. Everytime we moved buildings it was dark and we didn't sleep those first two nights. First time they let you crash you wake up in the position you fell asleep and you swear it was only a 5 minute nap.

See? AF guys have a better sense of humor too...
You're right Anticor, There's a pretty good mix of smarts in all the branches and I have to admit all the Marines I ever worked with were pretty together. (They were all Medivac helo crew though so maybe they were all almost as smart as AF techs to begin with?) I disagree you're all better looking/harder training but you did seem to know how to party better than the other services
We had better food, more stabillity, and I think better technical training in the Air Force though. Maybe that's changed since I got out in '96.
Can we at least agree to make fun of the Army? I used to help audit new tech manuals for all the services and the Army manuals were not only much smaller, (no schematics or troubleshooting stuff for them, it was all "return the unit to Depot"...) they also had cartoons in them to explain the warnings.

I have to admit we had it easier than that though it may have been because I got in on a Friday night and they could only do so much to us on the weekend, mostly lots of bed making training and yelling. We always got 3-6 hours of sleep depending on if you needed to do some boot shining, (We never got time for that, our uniforms were supposed to just be magically perfect at all times.) or extra studying for an upcoming test, etc. There was a lot of confusion and absolute chaos the first few days though. Great fun for the TI's.
I remember being disappointed the first time I did PT. I wrestled all thru high school so I was in pretty good shape and looking forward to escaping into a good workout. All we did was some calisthenics, pushups/situps and "run" a mile and a half then back to the books and marching around. We had one day of M16 and one with the confidence course and that was it, the rest was studying, marching, brainwashing BS, and testing at the end to make sure we learned the above. When was I gonna learn hand-to-hand and how to really shoot? Turned out, never.
I didn't need BCG's thank god. I think they were even dorkier in '88.

I know and work with a lot of folks that were in the Navy and I have to (grudginly) admit their training is pretty good too. If you can handle floating around on a boat for long periods, or it'll at least be worth it to you to get to travel to a lot of places, then it's not a bad choice. I didn't consider it because I grew up in a Navy town and all I knew was that squids liked to hit on high school girls. (Hard to compete with a guy with a car who can buy beer, at least with the girls I was going after at the time. ;)..)
If you want to really learn to fight, go Marines and make Anticor proud. Tuition benefits are so good while you're in, you could sign up to be a postal sorter in any service and probably still have more than half your degree done before you get out for very little cash if you concentrate on it.
Just don't trust your recruiter. Ask someone who's active duty or was recently if you have questions.
Just so you don't think I'm a recruiter or something, I would have gone to college instead if my situation was different when I joined. It can be tough to get out (in my case after 8 years) and be that far behind in the job market.
No regrets though. Ask Anticor, the military can be a kind of fun you aint going to get hanging out in college with folks who's biggest worry is their next Econ test. Plus a lot of women dig a guy in uniform...

Yep, as long as it isn't in the air, on the water, long range, or high tech and broken, you guys are pretty good. :D
Actually, I met up with some of your guys while they were training for drug interdiction at Beale AFB and they were pretty tough. I dont' know if they were as tough as they thought they were, but pretty impressive. I'll give a nod to anyone who can run several (5+/-) miles a day in 100 degree heat to keep their "edge".
I draw the line there and refuse to acknowlege the prowess of the Coast Guard, the reserves, or my high school JROTC...

i'm in joint training now and the instructors all give the two marines in the class a hard time. "let me put this in a way so that the marines will understand... push the stick forward and the trees get bigger, pull it back and the trees get smaller."
one thing i will give marines is that they have tough skin. =)

1 day with the M16? You killer! I will admit though Air Force has some bangin chow halls, I'd eat there before any other service.

I not only got just one day but the next 2 times I "qualified" (It was yearly and if you failed it meant no M16 for you in the field, assuming you'd get an assignment where you needed it, but you still kept your job regardless.) they gave us M16's with .22 LR conversion kits.
We had folks that had not only never shot a gun, but not even really heard one shot, thinking they were ready to get bad guys with them. One of the funnest times I had was the time I qual'ed with the first group in my month from the newbies after we went back to real ammo. Turned out 556 was a lot louder and hurt your shoulder if you didn't have it snugged. War is hell huh?
I was lucky and got to qual on the 92F because I had a secondary job working with EOD as an unexploded ordinance recon guy. I also got to run around with an AK-47 loaded with blanks when I was on an "aggressor team" that we used to test our Security police during exercies. (Picture a guy with some fun new training on ambushing sentries, quiet movement thru the woods, etc. popping out of 1 tree cover because of orders and opening up so I didn't make our SP's look bad. {sigh})
Bet I can camo out my face prettier than you can even if I couldn't shoot you at 75 yards if you were rude enough to be moving and stuff...
