View Full Version : On Getting a Boost

In the month of January 2022,
58,000 Americans died of COVID, of whom
12,000 were fully vaccinated, of whom
4,000 were vaccinated and boosted.

COVID was the leading cause of death in America,
the third leading cause of death for vaccinated Americans, and
the fourth leading cause of death for vaccinated and boosted Americans.
(This doesn't sound like much of an improvement but it is, 4th happens to be way lower than 3rd.)

.

There are 38 countries in the OECD.
Of these, America ranks 37th in the % of people who got their first dose receiving their second.
And it is a distant 37th:

https://imgur.com/pqaFzKR.png

While every other OECD country (except Colombia!) has seen more than 90% of the people who received their first dose return for their second, in America we are just below 85%. Note that this has nothing to with people who have not been vaccinated at all: 16,000,000 Americans simply never completed the journey from partially vaccinated to fully vaccinated. We do better in the % of people who received their second dose going back for their booster, ranking all the way up at 33rd! But we still do an objectively bad job, with only 44% of our fully vaccinated getting boosted when many countries are already in the 70%s, leaving 120,000,000 Americans in that third leading cause of death bin. It is also not a question of being slow and steady, in both cases the rate of increase has slowed dramatically:

29 days it took us to get from 10% of the population fully vaccinated to 20%,
20 days from 20% to 30%,
23 days from 30% to 40%,
63 days from 40% to 50%,
135 days from 50% to 60%, and
94 days later we haven't even reached 65%.

37 days it took us to get from 10% of the population boosted to 20%, and
72 days later we still haven't reached 30%.

Pending a sudden, significant, and sustained push for the vaccinated to get boosted, we likely will never reach even half the population boosted as deadlier and deadlier variants continue to emerge.

.

I keep posting the numbers about the risk the vaccinated still face because without them we cannot make informed decisions about whether things like the mild inconvenience of a booster shot or the very mild inconvenience of a mask are worth it. Breakthrough deaths for the boosted in February are not yet available, but even though total deaths were about the same at 59,000 breakthrough deaths for the fully vaccinated in total in February markedly increased to 16,000.

Covid is not magic, and this is not how viruses generally work. And many poor countries are barely vaccinated, if you are concerned about variants, send your 4th booster there. Get vaccinated, get boosted, but quit LARPing a dystopian movie script.

Covid is not magic, and this is not how viruses generally work. And many poor countries are barely vaccinated, if you are concerned about variants, send your 4th booster there. Get vaccinated, get boosted, but quit LARPing a dystopian movie script.

this is a take i've seen quite a few times, let's see what good ol' math has to say

3200 daily american deaths was the peak of original covid
2000 daily american deaths was the peak of the delta variant
2500 daily american deaths is the most recent peak of the omicron variant

this trend is ambiguous but generally (albeit gently) downward. however, we know that vaccines became widespread between that january 2021 peak and the september 2021 peak, so let's look at specifically the unvaccinated

3200 daily american deaths was the peak of original covid
on 2021/09/20 there were 181m vaccinated americans of whom 150 a day were dying of covid, which leaves 1850 a day for the 149m unvaccinated americans, which prorated to 330m works out to
4150 daily american deaths as the peak of the delta variant
on 2022/01/31 there were 211m vaccinated americans of whom 550 a day were dying of covid, which leaves 1950 a day for the 119m unvaccinated americans, which prorated to 330m works out to
5400 daily american deaths as the peak of the omicron variant

this trend is unambiguous and unequivocally upward, and is in fact accelerating

we can also look at the trend of breakthrough deaths specifically, and although we're limited to only two data points there since less than 1% of the population was vaccinated in january 2020, it doesn't take too much math to see that 550 daily deaths out of 211m is a sharp and incontrovertible jump over 150 daily deaths out of 181m, but if we really want to put a number on it it is more than triple the deaths per capita

.

now, what you're going to want to do now is question this data and this math. this is good, and you should do it!

but you should also question the math you saw that convinced you that omicron was less deadly than delta

and if you didn't see any math at all to convince you of that, you should very seriously question whether you believe it because it's true or because it's comforting

like the man said, the truth can be harsh and disturbing

but it doesn't make it any less true

.

.

if we can reach agreement on this, i will be happy to engage with the other three points you made

"The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked."

All they have to do is tell you some nebulous freedoms are being attacked in some nebulous way and you leap to do their bidding. I think even in a less calamitous scenario it would be more mortifying than funny to see you led around so easily, but certainly it's really not amusing right now.

then everyone ignored people like me and didn't "cancel Xmas", and those daily deaths shot up to 3200

and you let people make you think you WON that debate

and in the year since that grisly time, literally half a million MORE americans have died
as if someone had walked into Atlanta Georgia with an atom bomb and annihilated every man woman and child
and you CONTINUE to let people make you think you won that debate

He's always, always been an out of touch, socially awkward, introverted crazy person.

Covid has just brought it out in the open more.

I never thought of him as a jester.. because he's not kidding about all his fears, phobias and pessimism.

I never really laughed at him.. just thankful I don't know anyone like him so maybe he's a very small minority of people out there.

ETA: Also, what's up with his inability to capitalize the start of a sentence nowadays? Has covid gotten him this upset that he's unable to form a correct sentence? At least he's using more punctuation now.

Some people have stupid phobias and develop more as they get older.....Latrin reminds me of a scene from Without a Paddle....I'll just swap names to make it relevant here in this topic:

Latrinsorm : I wouldn't be so jealous of me if I were you. Every day I develop some new and exciting phobia.

Parkbandit : Yeah, you're alone on that one.

I didn't respond to that part of your post either. You know how quotes and all that work, don't you? You're not stupid, at least in a "book" sense, despite having zero common sense and some weird as fuck mental issues.

That said though, I don't think you're in some ill defined group. I don't think you're in any group, because you are in your own special unique category of extra retardedness that nobody else on the planet is in, whether those other people know how to buy cold cuts or not.
