I am trying out for the roller derby in June and I need your help picking a name!

I thought I had a pretty good name idea, but I got a list of national league names and it was already taken (Mighty Aphrodite).

Yep, skating around in a big circle is part of it. Scoring points and kicking ass is another part.

I went to see one of their bouts a couple months ago. The league here is pretty new - about a year old I think? I dunno... it just looked really fun :)

So what's the deal with this. is it scripted like Wrestling or actual competition? Do you get to elbow people over the bank rails into the stands like the good old days? or is it more like that soap opera roller derby that was on tnt about 10 years ago?

We bout on a flat track.

Stolen from the last bout's program...

There are three positions:
Pivot - Sets the pace for the pack and is the last line of defense against opposition scoring. She is recognizable by her striped helmet.

The Blockers - Attempt to block opposing team blockers, stop the other team's jammer from scoring points by passing & helping their jammer get through the pack by pushing her, pulling her and "removing" other team players from her skate path. Recognizable by bruises, scowls and pushy attitudes.

Jammer - Look for the star on her helmet as she speed skates through the pack, scoring points by passing opposing team blockers and pivot. The first jammer through the pack in bounds is called "the lead jammer".

The pack starts with a pivot from each team in front, three blockers from each team in the middle and a jammer from each team in the back. When the whistle blows, the pack takes off, and on a second whistle, the jammers start fighting their way through the pack in an attempt to be named lead jammer.

The jammers lap the pack and when they re-enter the pack, they receive one point for each member of the opposing team that they pass. A jam lasts a maximum of two minutes, but the lead jammer has the right to call off the jam at her discretion.

Tripping, pushing from behind, intentionally falling in front of and elbowing are illegal. However, if the refs don't see it, it didn't happen.

But is it real?
YES! The fights are real. We have a lot of respect and admiration for each other. We're good friends at practice... supportive and helpful. We even practice fighting moves together to make sure we all know how to play the game without injuring ourselves and others.

But once that whistle blows, it's a completely different story. While we're all level-headed (OK, we're all mostly level-headed), friendly girls off the track, when we're skating, we are our personas - tough, competitive, hot-headed and, some might even say, mean. And when we're in a game, we want to win.

Do skaters get hurt at bouts?
Sometimes. Roller derby is a full contact sport, but we wear safety gear - helmets, mouth guards, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards. We also have insurance to help us out when accidents happen. And accidents do happen, but we do our best to be as safe as possible.

Can audience members get hurt at a bout?
You betcha! RollerGirls sometimes fly into the audience, knocking over beers and getting up close and personal with the audience. A little common sense will tell you that if you're sitting three or four feet from out track, you're running a pretty high chance of getting a lap full of MN RollerGirls. But don't worry! Go on and get up there, because we have insurance for you too!

However... if you find a Minnesota RollerGirl in your lap, you can't take her home.
