Forums are awful but are they going to be archived? And yeah I don't think switching to a chat service is the right move either, expanded wiki sounds good but people won't be able to respond on it, seems like they are sweeping complaints under the rug where stillfront won't be able to have any oversight like forums they might have someone read but probably aren't going to shovel thru 52915959 discord posts.

That's absolutely a plausibility, I just don't think someone at Stillfront made that decision.

I'm not really sure how someone could reconcile stillfront dictating the change while at the same time accusing GS of using it to sweep complaints under the rug. I would suspect that when people complain, its via feedback@ which goes directly to onsite anyway.

If you look at Wyrom's response, I don't see how you can take this other than something GS GMs got told was happening and they are trying to make the best of it and make it work. They haven't said what the driver is- but if its a security vuln, then I doubt things will be archived. I would suspect some things like vignettes and various other historical things will be wiki-ported.

Or perhaps, as some have been talking about over the past 5 or so years, maybe it's really coming to fruition that these text based games are really on their last legs. And sooner, rather than later, the rug is just going to be yanked out from underneath the players and GMs because we'll attempt to log in and the game will no longer exist.

After the plug has been pulled, only then will we see a letter from Simutronics stating the games have been shut down, thank you for your time with us, we hope you the best and blah, blah, blah.

There's probably some super legacy vulnerabilities that are risky due to the interconnectivity with accounts that's not worth the investment to fix for the super old platform. Rather than leaving the exposure outstanding while finding the expertise to fix ancient tech, shut it down for now, see if the functionality can be lived without, and reintroduce something on modern hardware that's more readily and easily maintainable from the backend if necessary.

Wyrom is the PM for Gemstone. Lyneya is the PM for DR. They both work for an on-site team at Stillfront.

While True... Keep in mind that Simu has a large platform development side of their organization. It's quite a bigger company than some MUDs.
MUDs aren't the reason that Stillfront acquired Simu. Stillfront acquired Simu to help leverage platforms to expedite other company's mobile development streamlines. It was always for leveraging their IP, not their consistent revenue streams. That was spelled out in their first annual report post acquisition.

I'd guess that they're waiting to verify that there is a continued need for the forums, identify the gaps in the process based on existing tools, and if necessary, then create new forums if they're finding things not to be working as well as expected.

The GS officials are fucking trash as hell, I'm fine with this. I happen to like discord but I also respect the point that it's impermanent. I think the combo of Wiki + discord they're going for will work in the end. It sounds like they plan to have a Wiki feature that permits people to post questions, so the sole means of feedback will not be discord (which would definitely be bad).

It's some of the most toxic forums I have ever posted on, not so much in the traditional sense of toxicity, but because you simply can't discuss change there without having to swim through the muck and quicksand of people arguing to keep the status quo for no good reason aside from them simply enjoying arguing.

Yeah, that is EXACTLY what they do. Most good ideas start out rough and need to be polished. Instead of helping improve on ideas, they simply tear them down as best they can.

Surprisingly, at least the GMs do hear the ideas anyways, at the very least, and they don't get completely lost in all the drivel. Though most of them do probably get lost in it....

I think GS as a whole has chilled the fuck out. We all used to be younger back when these forums were kicking, so you'd have a lot more complaints and fights and shit being posted here. The average age of GS is quite a but higher now.

The way to play GS is to reactivate during the free months they hand out periodically, use all your LTE boosts you've accrued, then immediately cancel your sub.

I have a couple characters with 600+ LTEs banked, game basically plays itself while I'm away.

498 characters are logged on right now, of which 22 are mine, meaning 4.5% of the characters logged on right now are all my characters.

Some times in the wee hours of the morning I account for almost 10% of the characters logged on.

I wouldn't doubt at all if 30-50% of the characters logged on at any given time are alts controlled by the same person.

So yeah, there may be a similar number of characters playing the game now as there were 10-12 years ago, but the number of players is dramatically less.

The only reason I don't bother with GS discussions is because it's a pointless waste of time, at least if your goal is to get Estild to quit nerfing everything, and I pretty much give zero fucks about GS anymore other than for passing time at work, especially now that their plan is to basically nerf everybody and then tell us that things are "challenging" now.

That, and Discord requires you to stare at your screen 24/7 if you don't want to miss anything "important" since 99% of Discord is just babble and/or people wanting GM attention in front of other people.

I've seen people post using "WTF" or "what the ef?" and so on to not have posts pull and if I do something similar I get my post pulled for hidden vulgarity or whatever the fuck they call it. Everyone moved over to Discord? it seems... Events are all currency/hour using scripts... It's just not really that active.

They created a gajillion different channels just like they did on the officials, and many of the channels rarely have any chats, again just like the officials.

The wizard channel hasn't had any posts all day. Paladin channel hasn't had a post in 3 days. Zul-Logoth channel doesn't have any posts at all. Ta'Illistim has had 1 post in a week. Now granted those are the lesser used channels.

The general channel has had 36 different chats all day today among 10 different people.

The help channel also has had 36 different chats all day today among 12 different people, 3 of which were the same active people in the general channel.

That's really not that active for an official real time chat room, and unless there is a major announcement that is pissing off a lot of people most of the more active channels have similar numbers, and the less active channels are getting a few posts a day or fewer.

Discord is for sure more active than the PC, but people in this thread are acting like it's just the PC that isn't receiving much traffic these days because people are meanie heads here, when the more likely explanation is the player base as a whole is down and thus fewer people are posting here, on the officials, and on Discord.

Yeah Discord is horrible for relaying important changes. Just looking at the general-announcements channel makes my eyes bleed. There isn't any sort of order or categories or anything that would make slogging through the announcements easier, instead it's just a bunch of words and links to a soon-to-be-discontinued forum.

The officials were for sure a mess, but at least you had a place to discuss official changes to the game and you could read all of the related posts and not just a bunch of random chats from people in a real time chat room.

The wiki is great if you want to look up information on a subject you already know about, but it's not a place for discussion and it's kind of mess for showing recent changes.

I don't know why they are closing down the officials without having a new forum ready to go. Seems like a bad decision in a long line of bad decisions these past few years.

I would argue that Discord is just as toxic, if not more so, than the PC. It's very similar to the officials; if you're not a part of the approved clique, or you have the audacity to be vocal in your opposition to something that most people are in favor of, then you are subjected to derision and ridicule, it's just much more passive-aggressive than the PC is. I have seen people on Discord remain quiet or go along with the mob when I know they don't agree with what's going on, and the only reason is because they know how the mob would react to dissent.

I do agree that linking your in game character to Discord was just another way for the GMs to control discussion. Honestly with their history of demanding a heavily moderated environment before they will discuss things at said place, I'm surprised it took them as long as it did to implement the character/Discord link thingie.

Earlier I said the Wiki was a good source of information if you already knew the subject you wanted to look up (like you know about the stat "Influence" but you wanted to look it up on the Wiki to get all of the information about it), but after looking up a few things recently I have realized it's not even necessarily good for that.

Like I said look up "Influence" on the wiki and you would see the information isn't complete at all. It makes no mention of Influence affecting 330 at all, and that's because according to the page it was last updated: 19 May 2019, at 15:18.

The information on this page is almost 3 years old. But then again the semi-volunteer GMs are relying on player-volunteers to keep the wiki updated so stuff like this is to be expected.

The whole problem with Discord is the way Simu also considers random mentions in the middle of the night as an official announcement for whatever changed/got nerfed/etc. and they think that's totally ok.

I’ve been gone a short 8 or so years, and what do I find when I return? Rep is no longer anonymous to allow for fun trolling, and more than half the population is gone. What the hell man???

Then I had this great idea to troll with some rather obscene and ludicrous rep comments (anonymously). I wanted to see someone resurrect the “Respond to Reputation Comments” thread with discussions trying to solve the mystery troll. Obviously I failed miserably. To anyone (and there were quite a few) that got some really eff’d up negative rep comment…it was not personal, don’t try to make sense from it, and it’s not a true reflection of how I feel about said user. I offer no apology for my stupidity, but hope this short explanation will bring some comfort & closure to the matter.

At least on the officials, even if you have a few fucking retards that derail things, you can sometimes, genuinely, get an honest response from a GM - even if you have to pull it out of them.

I'm hoping something at least as useful as the officials are is used to replace the current official forums. Solely relying on PC or Discord to find useful information won't be viable for some people that still enjoy finding information in one, albeit not easy to navigate or search through, location. Here's hoping that Simu gets something better going.


FWIW I'm somebody that comes back to the PC every now and again when I get the Gemstone itch to try and get a feel for what's going on. Whenever I ask a question in the profession boards, or PM somebody directly about an item, I can't think of a time I haven't received helpful feedback with very little to no bs.
