The Republican party has a huge asset in Arnold Schwartzenneger,a s do the people of California.
I agree with stem cell research, but where is the money coming from?

I assume a combination of taxes & working it into the budget.
From Maimara's link:
A controversial California ballot measure that would fund a decade of stem cell research with $3 billion in state money was headed for a resounding victory on Wednesday, initial returns showed.

It's supposed to be bonds.
I am absolutely incensed about this one. I support stem cell research, I think it's a great idea... but 3 billion dollars? When we can't even pay to fix the highways? Please. California drivers pay an extra $700 annually in car maintenance because the roads are so crappy.. but we can afford to fund an extra three billion. Gotta love an informed electorate.
On a cynical note, I wonder how much Chris Reeve's recent death had to do with this initiative's success.

Ugh. It shouldn't have anything to do with it.

:lol2: I've got to laugh at that, really. Have you ever been to New York? Your roads are beautiful compared to NY's roads.
What Jonty said.
Try driving one of your tricked out, pimpin' cali-caddies on the FDR drive and see how long it lasts.

Actually, our great Governator already approved 3 BILLION dollars in bonds to be sold specifically to fun stem cell research. This was done before the approval of the Proposition. The one great thing I love about Arnold is that he isn't afraid to cross the party lines. Pro-choice, Pro-civil unions (no on marriages), and a huge proponent of gun control.
I'll clarify that the bonds were up for vote in the measure, but he proposed their sale. The major article of Prop 71 was an amendment to the California state constitution to legalize the three major forms of stem cell research. To oversee and direct funds, there would be a committee called the Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Doesn't that just have a nice ring to it?

You guys need to understand how much money this will make for us in the state of California. We have led the computer market for years and now we will run the biotech market for years. This is a great day for the state of california.

C'mon... it's not THAT hard for him to have those positions. He's governor of California!
It's not like he holds political office in Mississippi or something.
(BTW, we need a smiley with an extra chromosome... can someone make this happen? I really want to use it here, and we don't have it. We have every other smiley...)
If they amend the constitution, he'd be the perfect presidential candidate.
He's been a big time republican for a long time. I really haven't heard anyone mention his campaign efforts as a reason for Kerry's defeat in Ohio, either.

The only problem with the Governator running is it opens the door for Bono to run. And you thought BUSH could barely speak English, hoo boy.

You may be right in one regard Longshot, he is the governor of a state where the majority of the population is Democrat. Still, the pressure from the RNC is pretty tough, considering the numorous conservative religious groups hammering away at the initiative. Somehow I don't think he'd be able to hold the Republican nomination for President, at least not with the demonstrative lack of wit the majority of the population has shown. Currently he's holding a 69% approval rating, which is unheard of since back in Ronald Reagan's days as governor.
P.S They *did* amend the state constitution, the Proposition passed with a clear majority.

Italy has an awesome road system. On the autostradas, you pay .50 cents for about 50 miles to use. They make millions that goes towards just the roads. The government can't take it for anything else. So their roads are great and always being improved.
*Edited to say: Priced wrong. Its .50 to get on it min. But the prices drop the farther you go on it. Its not .10 a mile. I'd have to look it up. We've never paid more than like 15 euro for a lonnnnnnnng drive. and the great roads are worth it.
