View Full Version : My wife the witch

Well, the new Pope has done it. He's turned my relative apathetic Catholic wife of mine to look to witchcraft for spirituality.
She's always kind of been into that sort of stuff, but I didn't really expect her to get to the point where she is willing to raise our future children this way.
Now, she's not turned into a fundementalist witch, she's not dressing in black or going to conventions, but she's started the quasi-spellcraft thing.
I'm a total ALLAH worshipper (Apathetic Lethargic Lazy Agnostic Homebody) so I ain't got no religion nor any desire to acquire any. She doesn't want to bring me into it, just wants to practice it herself.
Maybe it is just a fad and she'll move back to Catholocism when she decides it is getting too wierd. But she likes it and I don't mind it. Should I worry now or worry later when we have kids? I also think her psycho Catholic mother will throw a fit of epic proportions when she finds out too.
Just felt like sharing.

...?
...maybe it's the non-Christian side of me, but I don't understand the connection between witchcraft and the Pope...

She thinks that the new Pope's recent statements are leading to a smaller, but more active church. She's been moving away from the church for a while now because of some bad experiences, and she's really not into going to Church every sunday...or even high holy days.
Straw that broke the camel's back probably.

I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt she would try to push it off onto her children if she gets into it. Perhaps you should sit down and talk with her on what her intentions are if she really does take an interest to it.
My mother follows that sort of direction. I wouldn't call her a witch by any means but she will look into the occasional "spell" to help bring good luck to a home, or to help physical/spiritual/mental healing. She never tried to push it onto anyone, and I find it rather facinating so I read the books she has on it from time to time.
Sounds to me like she was looking for any excuse. Good luck with that.

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. It just sounds like she's on a spiritual path to enlightenment. Perhaps sit down with her and discuss her beliefs with you. You might be suprised to learn that it is harmless. Unless she's drinking blood or biting the heads of chickens then there is nothing to worry about.
It is a shame people have this preconcieved notion that witches are evil devil worshippers when they simply are not. In fact they don't even believe in the devil. You will also be surprised to learn that many wiccans aren't witches and don't even practice witchcraft. Some witches aren't even wiccans. It's a very versitile way of life. The main premise is that you do what you will and bring no harm to any living thing.
Most witches, wiccans, and pagans are very peaceful, kind people who wouldn't even hurt a fly, literally. I've done a lot of reading on these subjects myself and it's quite interesting once you educate yourself to the truth you will find there is nothing at all wrong with it. I've been always interested in it eventhough I was brought up to believe wiccans, witches, and pagans are evil. When it soo is not true! I consider myself a New Age Pagan Christian. Haha! Yes it's so versitile. I'm very open-minded spiritual person. You will learn that there is a difference between being spiritual and being religious as well. I don't go to any one particular church. I'm thinking of going to this Lutherian Church down the street this Sunday though. Personally, I enjoy learning about other peoples belief systems and going to different kinds of churches. It's quite interesting and educational.
Really though you don't have anything to worry about in fact, I bet she will seem like a more peaceful person to live with.
Here is a good site for you to visit. It is one of my personal favorites. You will see that you don't have anything to worry about at all.

lol well after all I did say "most". I realize there are some nutcases out there who don't even understand their own belief systems. That's like saying OMG all Muslims are terrorists or all Catholic Priests are child molesters, and etc. Every sect has their own basket of bad apples but it doesn't mean they are ALL going to be that way. Surely we know that by now. :)

I am an equal opportunity cynic when it comes to all religion.

Well at least its equal. :D
I kind of like the method of putting them in the wood basket and dunking them into the river. Creative and yet entertaining.

Let her search, Revalos. She'll find the path that's right for her through her investigations. It may be that she'll adopt some sort of Wiccan belief set, or neo-Pagan, or even conventional Pagan. She might even return to her roots. In the meantime, she's learning about herself and what's right for her. :)

Better divorce her now before she learns the powerful spells and turns you into a newt when she's pissed at you.

She sounds like a ritualist to me.
In short, the religion itself means nothing to her, just the practice of it, specifically the motions.

Oh by the by, Wiccans wear the color black because the "magic" of the Wiccan religion is based in the absorbtion of energy, (black absorbs all colors), not because they dig scaring the hell out of people.
I applaud your wife's efforts to learn about other religions. She may even enjoy some courses on religion at a local college -- I took a course on Buddhism and Hinduism at mine when I was 16 and found it very interesting :) . I don't think there is anything wrong with expanding your horizons and learning about other cultures, (in fact, this was one of JPII's principle platforms of his papacy), just be sure if she chooses another religion, she chooses it for the correct reasons.

I can still call for cosmic justice. <3 focused energy.

Tis ne'er harm to sacrifice yourself for the greater good, eh? In fact, tis an honor to serve your fellow traveller in this way. Honor for idiots! Where's the harm in that, I ask you!

Wiccans are fucking awesome. Some of the most explicit and free-thinking people I've ever met were a (7 person) Texas Hill Country family of tree-hugging, self-aware, 'children of the earth' who cooked me tofu muffins while naked and named they're farm animals after dead Rock idols. And now I am reminded why I love America.
ps. Revalos, please advise your wife to contact a group called The Christian Mystics. They are a national group that encorporates the belief system of the Holy Bible into 'elemental worship' (witchcraft). Bible study dates and members can be found at most large universities. I always recommend them for witchcraft-curious Christians as they are an educated alternative to the (mostly) fad and undercultured ideaology of 'modern black magic' (or whatever its called this week).

Having looked into Wicca once, I can say that it's a nice, inoffensive, self-empowering spiritual path that by definition has no real down side to it. Of course, there will be fanatics just like with anything but with the dogma consisting of 'An it harm none do what you will' and 'There is no one true path' what can be bad?
As far as the "spell casting" goes, don't worry about it. It's just prayer by other means.
