I'm trying to set up a Windows ME eMachines computer, and I have a NIC card installed in a bay connected to the ethernet cable. For some reason, though, the computer isn't responding to the network card and I can't get onto the network at all. This results in no internet access, rendering the computer useless. I've tried just about everything I can think of to get the computer to read the card but nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

Do you have the current drivers for the NIC installed?

Let me just say how funny this is... "This results in no internet access, rendering the computer useless" I know exactly what you mean.

If its not even recognising it then drivers shouldnt matter. You could try going into your BIOS and turning off "Plug And Play OS", if you have it on. Or turn it on if its off.

If not, get a new NIC for 9 bucks. I've got a pile of bad NICs in my apartment, they just go bad...

I know the NIC is good because I pulled it right out of my current computer.

I got into my network. Somehow, switching the PCI slots for the video card and NIC worked. Video card works, and I can access the computer I'm posting with (downstairs). The one in my room that I'm working on (upstairs) is not connected to the internet. I don't understand how I can be on the network but not the internet. Four computers are on this network connected through a hub that's connected to the router. Everyone can access the internet but me.

Gateway issues? If your ISP registers by computer you need to add the computer or make sure you're computer has the proper path for the router in your house. If you're on the network but not on the internet that means you have an issue on the backside of the router hitting the internet cloud. I could draw network diagram to explain this better but instead I'm going to go iron my clothes for the day.

Is that a physical connection problem or configural settings? Everything is connected identically to how I use it for my personal computer. I just took the NIC out, put it back in mine, and am using it now.

I don't know how to do shit in ME after not using it and adjusting to how XP likes to pamper its users. I wish I had an XP install disc write about now.

Call your Internet provider. I had a similar problem setting up my wireless network through the router. I had to manually go into the router and modem VIA typing the IP addresses into IE and configure from there. When I just had everything plugged in, my lights were on as if I did have everything hooked up properly, except that it was only sending or receiving packets in terms of single digits over hours (in other words, no Internet). To make a long story even shorter, hopefully your ISP can walk you through setting it up.

I really don't want to put up with ME so I'm trying to get XP on it. I downloaded two virus-free executables, Windows XP Home and Windows XP Pro Corporate. I get an error message (Not a valid Win32 application) when I try to run them. I tried to put one on a bootable CD, but they're 500 MB each and too large for memory. Is there any way to f'ing do this?
