Well regarded source Cable News Network (https://twitter.com/CNN/status/1438060288729927683) recently demonstrated how 1 in 500 Americans have died of COVID-19 in these first eighteen months of the pandemic.

Many (https://www.axios.com/milestone-1-in-500-americans-died-covid-19-1be1c1ed-e99a-4759-8528-c0c7b1105054.html) were quick to point out the skew in ratio by age, for example:
1 in 35 Americans aged 85+ died of COVID-19,
1 in 150 Americans aged 65-84 died of COVID-19, and
1 in 780 Americans aged 40-64 died of COVID-19.

I was interested to see how these ratios stacked up for other causes of death for those age brackets:
For Americans aged 85+, the leading cause of death in an average eighteen month period is heart disease, killing 1 in 18.
No other cause kills as many as COVID-19.
Its death toll is about twice as high as the 1 in 68 of usual #4 cerebrovascular diseases.

For 65-84, the leading cause is cancer at 1 in 95, and
the second leading cause is heart disease at 1 in 113, and
that's it. Its about three times as high as the 1 in 489 of usual #4 cerebrovascular diseases.

For 40-64, the leading cause is cancer at 1 in 447, and
the second leading cause is heart disease at 1 in 580, and
that's it. Its about four times as high as the 1 in 2815 of usual #4 chronic liver disease and cirrhosis.

All in all, we have ordained and established a third great cause of death for Americans, joining cancer and heart disease in far outpacing all others across all these demographics, and in some cases surpassing them.

But there's another oft-discussed age bracket for whom I hadn't seen any such breakdown: 18-! For whom the current COVID-19 death toll is 1 in 10,653, making COVID-19 the #7 leading cause of death for children in a typical eighteen month period.

And the situation for them is getting substantially worse: the year ending August 2021 was the least deadly twelve month period of the entire pandemic with ~430k deaths, but it was the most deadly such period for the 18- bracket, with 258 children losing their lives to COVID-19.

To put this as clearly as possible, here are the five deadliest weeks of the pandemic for children so far:
24 dead children - 2021/08/19
23 dead children - 2021/08/26
19 dead children - 2021/09/02
16 dead children - 2020/12/03
16 dead children - 2021/09/09 (the latest on record)

The last four weeks were four of the five deadliest for children, ever.

And COVID-19 was already a leading cause of death for them.
