I am particularly in love with OSA thanks to a couple of folks who steered me on to it. I rarely do anything other than that now and would love to see folks OSA Info stats. Post them up as you hit what you consider landmarks (100 boats, 1 million pirates, if you own 3 or 6 boats etc).
Here are my details for my two dudes though they are by no means awesome

Is there a ELI5 guide for OSA?
Is it possible to buy the largest ship and solo 120 pirates on your own or is it groups only?
The wiki says there are a few jobs on the ship, can you fill those positions with NPCS and wander about frying pirates or do they need to filled by PCs?
What happens if nobody is steering the ship? do you drift out to sea or does an NPC take care of that for you?
Are there sea serpents, giant squid, sirens and kraken?
Is there dangerous weather? How likely are you be caught in a storm or smashed to pieces by a tidal wave?
Do you need any swimming ranks?

The best way to learn OSA I think is to find a group to go with. I guess I didn't get it until I was on onboard. There are lots of groups in Solhaven that open up their crew to anyone who wants to come. Level doesn't really matter. I've had level 100 and 17 on the same boat.
I haven't soloed yet. Most I've done is taken on a galleon with two. It worked out fine.
The crew at least at galleon < is mostly fluff. You need to steer the ship. You need to load and fire the cannons. You need to repair the ship. You need to murder the pirates.
If no one steers you drift. You can drop anchor via the capstan to stay in the same spot, provided there isn't a bad storm.
I've seen storms and whirlpools, but no creature dangers other than enemy ships.
Yes, storms happen and they impact your ability to navigate and steer. Sometimes they damage your ship. Sometimes they strike you with lightening.
You only need swimming if you plan to jump off the ship to retrieve salvage.
The wiki on OSA is pretty informative but like I said it took me actually going on a ship to fully grasp the system. I'm in Vaalor for festival of the fallen this week but if you reach out next week I'll be back in pirate land and happy to take you out on the ship either IC or casually OOC.

You need reputation to buy certain size ships. You could circumvent that by a grand auction of some kind but that is about it outside of grinding for rep.
You absolutely can solo, I solo it or rotate one of my lower levels out and my capped guy in. The mobs come slow enough for me, usually 1 every 20-30 seconds. If that is too slow you can keep moving on the enemy boat engaging ambushes to kind of speed up the pirate generation.
You could "drift out to sea" IF you started steering a direction and walked a way. When I am sailing to or from Solhaven to KR I will turn wheel SE or NW one time and it will sail until it cannot go SE or NW anymore and then float.
Storms are a thing but I have never hung around one long enough to find out what kind of damage they can do if any.
I think the only reason you need swimming ranks is if you want to jump off the boat to get salvage, though I never have.
HouseofElves called it though, plenty of folks (myself included) always have space for 1 more on boat excursions. Most folks are kind enough to give you a FULL tour of everything or if you just want to wreck pirate faces they will get to the smashing too. The best way to get a feel is to carve out a little time to have someone take you out and show you the ropes. It is an absolute blast, you will not regret giving it a try.
