I have always been fascinated by the high level hunting grounds in this game, and would love to hear more about these areas.

Which hunting ground do the players who have hunted both places prefer? Why? What is it that you hate about the Rift, or about OTF? What is it that you like?

Being a rogue, rift was fun until I couldn't learn much from the third level (level...heh, I can't even remember what the floors are called anymore.)

But I loved OTF. The aqueduct was like cash hunting Sheru's Temple back in the day. And the nice quiet West Woods at night were one of my favorite hunting grounds in the game. But after about earning a million exp there...it did get a bit tedious. That's partly why I left, boredom and all that repetitiveness finally caught up after all these years.

Look at it this way, that's roughly 1000 hours of your life you'll never get back! :)

By the time my characters get to 100, I expect more (and good) high-level hunting areas.

People that think this way should sleep no more than 4 hours a night.

Edited to add that I was very off topic.

I sort of liked the Rift, but hated what I considered the isolation of it. It was a rush though when I first got rifted then mad scrambled looking for the way out.

The Rift becomes easy pretty quickly, where-as soloing in OTF you may be a split second away from death every time you go there, even if you're level 100. Always exciting.

I loved the rift when I was hunting plane one, it was a lot of fun with the random riftings, the witches popping up on one and stuff. I hunted there as soon as Chica hit 66.

Once I got too old for one I moved to three, bit more difficult though and I kind of found it boring so I moved to the Aqueduct. I loved it there, pretty decent loot and the hunting wasnt that bad. I moved to OTF proper when Chica was 88 I think.

OTF is really quite hard, I die way more than I used to in any other area, its a bit unpredictable too, anyone can die there in the right situation. You get knocked over, ambushed, picked up by a griffin and the next thing you know you've lost your shield and you're being dragged out by Naseer! It's all part of the fun though, at least hunting isnt boring.

I did try plane 5 a couple of times but I really hated it, it was too boring and the vaesp implosion sucks.

In terms of people, I really enjoyed hanging out in the cavern at the rift, everyone helped each other out with rescues, healing, raises etc. At first I thought OTF totally different but after a while you get to know the people around the area and they are just as nice. People go out of their way to help you out just as much. More people should hang out in the tree though cos it can get kinda boring! :)

Heh... OTF.

But that's simply because the main continent of Elanthia left a poor taste in my mouth. I'd rather stay in Ta'illistim, even if my main character dies 80000x more. It's only money.

How have you posted 1300 times and not learned how to quote someone?

OTF is considerably easier than the rift, I see no reason to hunt anywhere else.

Rift:
-Good: Treasure, challenging, interesting critters and lots of area to hunt at different levels of your ability. Roaming voids also keep you on your toes.

-Bad: Roaming exits, having to traverse back through each previous level to get back to rest area unless you use a Koar gem which gets expensive. Dying and expecting to be rescued is almost an exercise in futility unless you die on plane 1. The ledge sucks for hanging out. No access to bank/gem merchants unless you fog back to pinefar. And you cant make it up the thread with all the loot you can make on plane 5 because you're too freaking heavy to climb.

OTF:
-Good: Lots of $$$ to be made, challenging profession based enemies remind me of hunting Shan in Solhaven way back in the day. Access in and out is straightforward. Lots of room to get your skills on with lots of swarms. If you can survive while carrying lots of weight, you can walk out with more boxes than you are capable of carrying. Close proximity to a large metropolitan area (Illistim) which is just a ring/fog away.

-Bad: Dying will get your gear stripped off, decaying will send you to a secluded spot within the boundries of OTF which means you gotta run back out and risk death again if you're not prepared. Younger OTF hunters must run through the heavy hunting level areas to get to the younger Aqueduct which, if monsters are swarming on the market road, can be disasterous.

Vote: OTF is where I'd prefer to spend my hunting time.

Ganalon pretty much covered it. Personally, I hate the rift because of the isolation and the blatant OOC & multiaccounting that I've often seen there. I feel smothered being limited to those four rooms and it's a pain in the behind if you want to get some spells because the pool strips them. I like OTF because it has the amenities of the town, although the townspeople are rather dull.

That being said, I still prefer OTF overall.

OTF before GS IV was the best. Now it's just okay, then again I have hunted it for the last 2 years, so anything New would be good.

I liked the Rift, once I actually got inside. I like hunting challenging areas, I don't like jumping through hoops to get there. The walk from Icemule to the Rift sucked. Having my spells stripped in the pool stucked. Walking back to town after every other hunt sucked (the loot was excellent up there). Next level I'll be giving 'OTF:Easy Mode' (the Aquaduct) a try. From everything that I've heard the Aquaduct is stupidly easy, but we'll see. I hunt as a two weapon combat bard completely self-spelled,.

Aqueduct:

Gremlocks: garrote manuever will be a bitch if you have no dodging/CM skills. Highlight their name so you can see when they creep in. Highest threat of all thats in there if you hunt using threat assessment/neutralize combat strategy.

Taints: easy to kill, but love to curse and cast all sorts of stupid magic on you; but your TD should be good enough to ward then disable them.

Beings: will kick your head off if you dont watch it (manuever attack) and they have this wierd attack where the eyes in their abdomen stare at you and cause you to have 30 seconds or more of hard RT... thats one of the retarded moves thats been incorperated there. Other than that they are easy to kill.

Make/get a script to run from the aquaduct nexus to the portal/sentinels so you dont get clipped by a scout while you're walking to and fro the aqueduct area. I've got one I can send if you need it.

Luck to you, you'll have fun in there thats for sure.

Rift is ok, pretty easy...but hard to get around....Tha-Thump! To many puzzles, arches, doorways, strings, crowns. Just a general pain.

OTF is great, its not easy. Seems every room either has a scout pestering you, or a Construct trying to knock you over. The thing about them looting you when you die, get a medium container, put your valuable stuf in it, close it, and put it in your cloak. Then close your cloak. TADA!

If you do plan on capping a character, buy 4x shields and locker them. So if you do happen to loose a shield..Oh well. As far as a weapon, just have your frienldy capped wizard cast a spell on the 500 coin falchion/longsword you buy at the pawnshop, or weaponshop. Instant 4x with flares!

So I love OTF. Its by far the most challenging area to hunt.

My 65 cents.

Rift is more tedious than Pookas.
The Cavern is almost the same as the Ledge (as I remember it) but with hundreds of miles further to go back to civilization.
Wandering voids arne't bad at all, you just sprint right past them.
The treasure is slightly above average, as in being able to come out from the caverns (say after 4-5 hunts) with roughly 40k worth of joy.
The RP and general fun between hunts is non existant. Post while you rest.

I'll never hunt OTF so I can't help out there.

Plane 1 was/is my favorite hunting area in the game.
I hate swinging on Plane 3 so I prefer the Aquaduct and Plane 4 is just too much of pain to get in and out of.

Rift Planes 1-3 = Great

after that, then EN Barrier is where to be.

Hey Atlanteax, I know this is off-topic but is Michigan the most miserable place ever?

I don't think so. Always plently to do all year round. Skiing/snowmobiling in the winter to boating/swimming in the Summer. Nevermind the Fall/Spring.

Ok Off-topicness over for me.

Preach it. OTF is not difficult or challenging. I think the only way I can die in there is if 7 or 8 things go wrong at once, and then I compound things by making 5 or 6 consecutive errors.

That place is a joke in GS4, and is only challenging if you are hunting way over your level. I find it difficult to believe that any level 100's find the place challenging, unless they are bought characters.

I remember folks saying don't go to Rift just becouse you're the correct age to get in. I took my character the moment he became 66 and wasn't hurt for weeks.

I find , playing a sorcerer, that I get tired of hunting one place even before my character gets withing 4-5 trains of being the same relative train as the critter. If it wasn't for guarded curse and sometimes 413, this wouldn't happen.

You can use a gold ring from inside the OTF Barrier to the Aquaduct, there is no need to run through the Ithzir and griffins.

Only thing that gets me is if a scout ambushes right after I ambush a creature. Then it's generally a stun followed by 6 creatures showing up at once to call wind, enrage, and knick me to death.

Constructs are still my favorite thing to kill.

Someone noted they need more high level hunting areas; I had to 100% concur. Seriously, if they lack the resources to make them/design them, they have a whole player base of people who would help them. Nothing wrong asking for help...unless you're simu.

I'd rather start a new Ranger character than get my sorcerer to hunt in Ta'illistim.
I judge he has about 3 months.
