No no, not a Nazi, a Dark Lord.

Oh well, he was never in the party, and membership in the youth was mandatory, so he gets a pass on that.

Still seems to be about the most conservative of all those in contention though.

Oh I agree it is just that the possibility is most certainly there that is a sympathizer.

One of my best friends was East German that moved here and he says the Nazism is running rampant more then he could ever try to explain to me. I believe him.

Just because he was a member of the Hitler Youth doesn't make him a Nazi. In those times, most of those kids had little, if any, choice in the matter.

While this Pope is considered conservative in his thinking, few of us lean completely in either direction, conservative or liberal. I think we need to give time a chance to show us the directions this Pope will take.

Very true.

Pope John XXIII was supposed to be a short term, nothing kind of pope. He instead brought about the huge changes of Vatican II. You never know what to expect.

As the thread notes: the guy is also old. I doubt the church wants another JPII, so here they get what they want. It's more a commentary on disposable figureheads.

That "elephant goddess" is, actually, the Hindu god Ganesh, son of Lord Shiva and the Goddess Parvati. He's the god of domestic harmony and of success. He's also known as the Remover of Obstacles, and the most revered and beloved of all the Hindu pantheon.

The legend goes that he was a mortal boy who was beheaded in battle. Shiva ordered people into the forests for the first animal head they could find to be placed on the corpse of Ganesh. They found an elephant. Ergo...elephant-headed Ganesh. :D

Being Pope is one of the most lethal jobs in the world. I'd actually imagine his successor will be liberal, so then the conservative press can lable him the Antichrist, Parkbandit.

Yes, because American politics plays a huge part in who will be Pope.

You're right because all of our cardinals commit suicide or die from anal bleeding in prison after they are caught for child molesting here in America.

No cardinals = no pope.

American politics plays absolutely no role (other than insuring an American won't be Pope.) ...I'm just pointing out that, gosh gee, there's conservative media stupidity too. There's suggestions that this fellow was an appeasment short term candidate due to his age, and the church will open up with his successor.

Well to be certain is was intended to come off that way. I think the Papacy is garbage.

JOIN THE PROTESTANT REFORMATION BROTHERS!

Catholicism is garbage as far as I'm concerned as well but hey, to each their own.. especially if you like being oppressed.

It's the 19th, which is an odd day of the month. So X is putting down the US.

Just wait till tomorrow, on the even days he claims to be an Americain himself.

None, but it's not because there are too many Protestants... It's just harder for a Pope to be elected from a different hemisphere.

This has to be the stupidest thing I think I've heard any say EVAR. Here's a little clue X, the protestant population of any country has ZERO bearing on how our pope (I'm Catholic) is decided. The population of cathoics in a given country also has no bearing.

I think that the more accurate reason that there may never be a pope from the US (aside from the sexual abuse scandals) is that the US is a superpower and a pope from the US might not be considered as impartial as from another country. I could be wrong.

I doubt the sex abuse scandals will play much of a factor. If it did, Cardinal 'above the' Law - the one who knowingly and deliberately played the shell game with priests who molest children - wouldn't have gotten the pat on the back and hearty 'well done' that he just did during the Pope's funeral.

Actually, X has a point here. A Pope will only come from a country that the Catholic religion has extremely deep roots. The United States isn't one of these places.
