View Full Version : New Capped Area: HinterHoA

GM Auchand has been working on a new hunting ground located via the Abbey in Icemule Trace's caravan system, which will integrate with the ongoing storyline. The area currently consists of ~240 rooms which are in QC right now. He has moved on to working on the creature coding which will take awhile. His current plan includes 16 new creatures. There will be five total areas, if I interpreted his information correctly. He said he will not be upping the max level of creatures.
He intends for there to be one wide area that is around 96-100+ creatures and then several smaller areas with creatures unique to each sub-area. Then there will be a "high-level undead area that's very much on its own, and a very far post-cap area to serve as a capstone to the place. I expect the last will be ultra-challenging".
These may or may not use the Boss Creature System. He hasn't determined that.
"This area leans heavily on Norse stylings. There's a big briar in it that normally isn't different from the rest of the woodland that's around it. I was thinking, for example, of having a Wild Hunt analogue spawn at odd intervals and turn it into a major threat. With, you know, commensurate rewards. But that's still on the drawing board, with not a single line of code to support it."
"I don't personally like it when a fantasy game leans too heavily on one source of real-life inspiration. So you may see longhouses and runestones, but you'll also see bloodthirsty wendigos, a vast catacomb, etc."
"The undead will be in their own area, for the most part. Most of the rest of it is living. However, I can promise right now that visitors to this hunting area will learn to live in fear of the shadow of wings overhead."
Not surprised. Basically this group now has REIM, the Rift and now HinterHoA all in a convenient spot.

My guess is because they do REIM and this is located in the same town as REIM that it is catering to them? I personally would have liked this in like Zul or some other area, just to spread the cap love but I also love IMT so I don't mind it for that reason either

I wouldn't consider Reim any town. It's minimal effort to earn an ability to transport globally and I'm pretty sure HOA's members do so.
I use it even within IMT because lazy.
Also Retser made it and was the town guru previously to quest guru when he did so, different teams and times sharing love of the cold north!
Rift obviously has nothing to do with HOA. Hinterlands or wilds or whatever is a yet a third GM/team and era so we'll see. It probably will be accessed from more than IMT I assume if using a caravan/chair lift type system similar to Sanctum of Scales (which he also did primarily for Solhaven his previous town).

Just in case folks reading this thread are unaware: Reim, while always being directly accessible via IMT, is accessible from any town via the REIM TRANSPORT command. You just need a tiny bit of built up Reim Popularity (or whatever it's called) to use that feature.
And, per my understanding, the reason the Hinterwilds are going to be accessible from IMT is two-fold: (1) Auchand (the IMT GM) is building it and (2) it's playing/played a role in the IMT storyline. Now, with that said, there's no indication that the IMT Caravan system will be the only travel system that can bring people to the Hinterwilds. For all we know, the Elven Nations could have a similar travel system via airships.

Because HoA contains a large group of players...many who are whales. Add HinterHoA to REIM, Rift and just a short dash away, SoS.
The problem with dev is that it's based on what the dev team wants to do, not what the game needs. The game needs diversified capped hunting grounds, not catering to a smaller group of players that now get the convenience of 4 hunting areas accessible to them in a matter of seconds.

This is just a hunting ground, he's just trying to rile something up against HoA. He just hates HoA no matter what. There's really no reasoning with him.

What’s the point of geographical boundaries then.

Just a hunting ground?
It’s more than that. It’s the highest level hunting ground in the game with the most reward (unless they screw that up which will probably happen).
So you and your buddies get to enjoy it all right at your fingertips. Wouldn’t surprise me you’ll set up scripts to cycle through the hunting grounds you can access immediately and then cyber and enchant coraesine between rests :)
It’s favoritism pure and simple.
Meanwhile the rest of the geographical areas won’t receive dev for another decade because I’m sure Naijin is going to work on PSM4. What’s the point of ZL?

Still no River's Rest hunting areas?
NVM, I forgot that development time was spent on a fishing dock...they already had and the town "guru" didn't even realize it.

Have you used the caravan system that was added to the IMT Abbey and referenced by Auchand as the likely means of entry to this hunting ground? It's not particularly speedy. The distance between IMT and the Hinterwilds has been conveyed as vast, so I think you may be underestimating the player wait involved in traveling between the town and this area. If you look at the continental map – https://gswiki.play.net/images/e/ee/Geographica_elanthia.jpg – there's nearly an equal amount of ground to cover needed to reach the area behind the DragonSpine from both IMT and Ta'Illistim.
I'm pretty confident that both the west and the east will have the ability to access this area.

If they implement Hinterwilds with a timesink travel requirement to get there, after all the dialogue over the years about what people don't like about some of the existing capped hunting areas, I'll really be at a total loss, to be honest. The last thing anyone wants to do is put their character in a wagon and have to go read Twitter for 5 minutes until they can hunt. At least the Sanctum has Periapts. I'd hope Hinterwilds would get something similar.

Would be nice if they provided capped areas access via symbol of seeking for the Volners and maybe a room to ring into. Or maybe even just some tough climb or swimming requirements for entry? Anything but a cart..

This is fair. And it has nothing to do with HOA, most of whom reside nowhere near IMT.

I would not be surprised to see a similar mechanic in place. Based on the current storyline, I cannot see casual travel to the Hinterwilds being implemented as a quick stroll using ;go2.

I mean den of rot was added in the middle of them being like "what can we do to make rescues better?" and everyone is basically "just. let. the. fucking. rescue. spells. fucking. work." and guess what doesn't work in the den of rot?
I feel like a lot of the big picture gets lost when gms are working in their silos of their grand visions and then once it's out you need to move mountains to change those "flavor" type things once it's "approved" in a certain way.

I think if they have time sink bullshit it’s going to radically reduce the traffic the place gets and it would be really disappointing to have gone through the farce of being asked for our feedback on entry/exit mechanics, giving that feedback, and then being completely ignored.

Yeah it is dumb as shit that there’s like a half dozen travel spells/abilities in the game that just don’t fucking work once you cap, adding that restriction to the Den of Rot is lol and VERY Simu.

Mine carts are really quick now. I mean you can ;go2 across the mountains in what...12-15 minutes? At least the carts are predictable i hate the ferry a lot more.
They need to learn this lesson: making a new place difficult to get to is good! it makes you feel cool and helps it feel dangerous your first trip out. but that...doesn't work when you're going back and forth to the place 30 times a day. Then it just feels annoying. The SoS cheater entrance / confluence soulstone is a step in the right direction because it let them have that but then you can just use the area once that mystique wears off without it being terrible. But then you run into the problem of you can't do rescues there cause no one wants to wait (at all) let alone the 5 minutes for a cleric to caravan out or find a third person to open a portal for them.
Maybe a one and done item that you don't have to keep charged? I dunno. The airship / caravan thing but sped up is possible but it feels like the ~5 minute mark is their floor there for that sort of trip which is uh...not great.
