View Full Version : On the Burning Kingdom

The new daily cases rolling average for the United Kingdom fell to 2000 on May 2nd, the lowest they had been since before the August surge began.

Twenty six days later, they hit 3000.
Five days later, they hit 4000.
Three days later, they hit 5000.
Tomorrow they will hit 6000, and in a week will hit 10,000.

2000 daily cases in the United Kingdom prorates to 10,000 daily cases in a country the size of the United States.

We are currently at 14,000.

.

60% of the United Kingdom population has received at least one shot of the vaccine, and 42% are fully vaccinated.
51% and 42% are our numbers respectively.

As of Sunday, 20% of our 12-15 population had received at least one shot of the vaccine.
This 3% week over week increase was half the previous week's 6%, and puts them on track to top out at 27% vaccinated.
Combined with the asymptotic growth of other age groups puts our ceiling of vaccinations around 60% of the country pending further age groups becoming eligible.

.

Throughout this pandemic we have told ourselves that what happened somewhere else was irrelevant.
It's an Italy thing, it'll be fine here.
It's a New York and New Orleans thing, it'll be fine here.
It's a Southern thing, it'll be fine here.
It's a winter thing, it'll be fine here.
It's a vaccine thing, it'll be fine here.
It'll be fine here.
It will be fine here.

The virus doesn't care.
The virus never cared.
The virus will never care.

We are not going to vaccinate enough people to keep us out of exponential growth.
We could, but we won't.

We are not going to reimplement lockdown protocols until it's far too late.
We could, but we won't.

We are going to stand around watching as our numbers see the same explosive growth as the UK's.

Again.

.

There are two silver linings.

First, unlike the United Kingdom our school year is already mostly over - while they're different around each country, ours generally end in early June while theirs end in early July. This removes the least vaccinated part of the population from the riskiest area they inhabit for a time, which will slow (but not eliminate) our increase. Even this is not unalloyed silver, since if the spike doesn't become undeniable until September enough of us will desperately cling to the openly silly excuse that it's seasonal and there's nothing we can do anyway... and this potentially will be very neatly timed with the first vaccinations becoming critically less effective.

Second, like the United Kingdom we see an 18 day lag between reported cases and reported deaths. Since they're still in the "considering" and "examining" phase we'll have a good three weeks to see if deaths continue to track to cases:

https://imgur.com/zZk42cG.png

There's a theory that since vaccinations are wildly disproportionately administered the old, the number of cases can go up without a concomitant (albeit delayed) increase in the number of serious illnesses, hospitalizations, deaths, etc. This is the first sharp increase in a heavily vaccinated region by which we'll be able to test that theory. If the orange dots stay near the blue line, our cases will continue to inevitably precede deaths, and we'll have a brief warning period that enough of us will ignore just as we have so many times before.

.

We have never once been proactive, and enough of us won't be this time either.
Again.

But every one of us who is forces the curve that much shallower, forces the curve to start from that much lower.
Again.

Every one of us can contribute to the many lives that will be saved, even though no one of us can save the thousands more that will be needlessly lost.
Again.

Every one of us has a choice to make, free of any sanction or reprisal.
Again.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson (https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-57477179) gave the United Kingdom's lifting of coronavirus lockdown a "no go", delaying it a month in the face of the 2021 summer surge. This and other sensible reactions across the pond have started to bend the curve - while cases are still increasing and broke 8800 today, five times higher than their recent low of 1650 a little over a month ago, there is an approaching plateau.

The UK's 2020 fall surge started in August.
Our 2020 fall surge started in September.

By late spring 2021 they were able to bring cases down to 1/30th of their surge-on-surge winter peak before the aforementioned quintupling.
By comparison we are at 1/20th of our surge-on-surge winter peak.

We know another surge is coming.
We know it for a fact.
We know we have the same type of economy, the same type of variety of peoples and sects and governments, the same vaccinations.
We know, in short, that there is absolutely no difference between them and us in the eyes of the virus.

So do we want to be reactive?

Or do we want to be proactive?

Latrinsorm must be so sad that most people are choosing not to live in fear anymore and his fear mongering isn't resonating anymore.

I went into the gas station yesterday and there were around 20 people in there including employees and not a single person was wearing a mask. I think people are over this shit and it ain't gonna be so easy to tell everyone to go back to your fear mongering ways.

You know an introverted, socially awkward person like Latrinsorm wishes we could stay in lockdown for the rest of his life and he's miserable he has to venture outside his little hole.

Latrinsorm needs a job where he can just work from home and never have to leave it.

Noted PC reader Prime Minister Boris Johnson is clearly listening to the facts I and others have presented, and most people inevitably do too. All I'm saying is it would be nice if more people listened earlier - a pound of prevention is worth sixteen pounds of cure.

all that is needed to bring the numbers to 0 - distance, mask, hygiene. i've also been vaccinated and that helps but if we had ever really put our minds to it the first three would have been sufficient, which makes it even more embarrassing that we're going to fail with all four

and the reason for that, the crucial distinction, is that i don't look away, don't succumb to the deeply ingrained evolutionary impulse that if we hide under the covers and say they're not real the monsters won't get us

unfortunately the most deeply pampered group in America retains significant sway over one of the major parties, because life long coddling has convinced so many white men like us that if we whine loud and long enough it actually impacts reality

it doesn't

no matter how long tgo01 holds his breath, the numbers will go up
no matter how hard parkbandit stamps his feet, the numbers will go up
no matter how loudly methais rolls his eyes, the numbers will go up

you know they will
you know it for a fact
they have every single other time i told you they would
they have every single other time your smug self-assurance told you they wouldn't, it was fearmongering, it was overblown

you chose wrong every single other time

what will you choose this time?

sooner or later enough people come around to the truth once they're told the numbers are high enough often enough that we turn the tide - boris johnson ain't no bleeding heart liberal, but people like me kept telling him to stay strong while people like you kept telling him to quit, and he stayed strong

if i can change

and he can change

I know you think telling people they should be wearing a mask while taking a dump at home by themselves is helping and that the purpose of your self righteous posting is so you can feel like you're important because your entire life has been lived in fear as it is, but it's actually pretty useless and no one cares to watch you text masturbate.

Also, I've been at home for 99.999% of the past year. Therefore I'm doing more to help than you are, and you should feel bad about your heartless actions.

Also...

If everybody did this, then the virus would go away because nobody would be able to catch or spread it. Right?

Clearly you want people to spread the virus more.

I was using spiced rum to clean my pieces. I'll probably stick to the rum in the future, it leaves a nice aftertaste.
