Just a minor clarification, you technically need a little bit more because it's relative to the *final* difficulty. For enchanting, each +1 adds something like 7 or 8 difficulty, so you'd want (loresung difficulty) + 8 + 100 total skill for 100%. Using your example, 794 for 100%

Thats fair Izzy = ).

Usually it helps to give people some sort of general idea, and then talk more with them.

I've done a few 950 projects where the user understood and was fine with the failure rates.

So the difficulty is the *Current* difficulty or the Difficulty to do the cast?

Did we ever get that clarified?

For sure, I certainly wasn't trying to detract from your post - just trying to share some knowledge since I know it is fairly nuanced and the subject came up recently on lnet. I agree that you don't need to be at 100% success to attempt, like you said. Heck, on my own project piece I think I'm working with a 70% success rate or something and I've been lucky so far. When you get to the difficult items, taking a risk can be worthwhile rather than hunting for a super mutant.

The bard song difficulty is current measurement of "item level" (for lack of a better term) on the piece. In order to enchant/encorcell, you need to overcome the next "item level," with a final result of 100 or greater (including the roll). So, just to illustrate with another example:

Bardsong difficulty: 100 (this includes all current item attributes, material modifiers, etc)
Enchanting from +20 to +21
Final difficulty: ~108 (this is what the bardsong will read if you succeed!)
Necessary skill bonus to overcome with ~0% failure chance: 208 ("you can only fail if you are horribly unlucky" message)
208 - 108 = 100, therefore the roll doesn't matter and you succeed no matter what (barring a fumble)
With a skill of 158, you'd have a 50% chance of success, and so forth

Ensorcell is easier to calculate since it's a flat +50 difficulty, but same general idea. In the simplest terms, bardsong + ~108 for enchanting, bardsong +150 for ensorcell for ~100% success.
