Letting the other players be able to tell seems to be the intention, so that scammers and other dubious types cannot just screw people over and then pay for a name change to start the process anew.

As I mentioned, nothing in the foreseeable future. If we did consider it, we would almost certainly make sure the running list of names was accessible to everyone (likely via PROFILE). Things like BEFRIEND and DEMEANOR would stay in place so you'd know who is who easily there. But like I said, there are no current plans.
