View Full Version : Discord Authorization

The official GemStone IV Discord server now requires authorization to access most channels. To do so, please use the DISCORD verb from within the game.
A few notes:
* Only Premium subscribers can access #premium.
* Only Platinum subscribers can access #platinum and must run the DISCORD verb from the Platinum instance to get setup.
* Only Shattered subscribers can access #shattered and must run the DISCORD verb from the Shattered instance to get setup.

I see the GMs want to know who is who in the Discord channels and tie them to user accounts. Just another reason to avoid discord. If I have a gripe I won't try to hide behind an alt name on discord, I'll blast the GMs on the officials.

When I bother to get to it, I'll tie my discord with the name of some obscure alt I own or something. I like my privacy.

Yeah I'd be pretty shocked if they went through all of this trouble if people could just bypass all of this by creating f2p accounts.
It has probably been a thorn in the sides of GMs from day 1 of Discord that they don't have complete control over who joins the Discord channel like they do on the officials.
Surprised it took them this long to clamp down on this.

We'll probably be moving to a system that requires account validation and forces your Server Nickname to be either your account name or one of your characters. DragonRealms has been using it for their server for the last few weeks. F2P and non-validated users would be restricted to a few channels.

But why???
Control.
Wyrom tried to turn the PC into the official forums, when that didn't work he convinced a bunch of people to create a new unofficial forum where the GMs would be safe from mean words, when that failed to attract much attention he basically took over the unofficial Discord channel, when that proved to not be enough control for him they created an official Gemstone Discord server, now they want to really clamp down on who is and isn't allowed to post to the Discord server.

double edged sword. i know people who haven't logged in months in that server... it's equal cleaning house, and giving Estlid the power to scold you out of game if you have an opinion also...

I have noticed that with Discord rising in popularity, the GMs post on the forums a lot less (some are a lot more guilty of this than others). A few the recent Feedback Requests they've posted on the forums initially had some minimal one liner responses from the GMs who made the post, and then after while would go completely silent in terms of GM response, despite players continuing to offer feedback on new issues in those threads. They might end up offering some kind of response to the same topics on Discord (if you bother to go there and dig), but the actual forum thread that the GM made and even linked to in their design document would not be updated at all.

Yeah, Discord has largely superseded the officials and the wiki. It took like... 3 months for the ranger spell list to get updated. If they want to keep making it even more exclusive I guess that's their prerogative, but it's probably not in the best interest of the game.

Most games these days have a dedicated link with their latest patch notes that anyone can view. There is usually a discussion on said link that anyone can view but only people logged in can participate in.
For some reason the GMs don't seem to want to make it easy to find the latest changes they have made to the game.

My confusion, and humor is this.
I moderate the Official Valorant Discord. Said discord has over 350k members, is literally Verified through discord yadda yadda...And yet, we don't require people to authorize/Link their Riot ID ala Discord.
I've very rarely ever seen games utilize discord integration in that manner. And these games have actual Verified Discords as well, Gemstone's isn't truly verified at that. Most AAA titles don't regulate their discord to the point where they punish infractions in it, via in-game punishments as well

I don't know how that Discord is as far as interaction with the developers or whatever, but my guess would be since GS is overall a pretty small community, they probably just want people without active subscriptions to shut the fuck up.
A couple idiots with a well presented shitty idea actually has a chance (even if a small one) to make it into the game. On a Discord with 350k people on it, I'd guess not so much.
Same goes for offering GM solicited feedback, like with the sorcerer review.
Imagine like 100 Krakiis, but with inactive accounts and haven't played in years, offering dev GMs ideas and feedback on Discord, for example.

Are the shenanigans on Discord really that bad that there needs to be account/phone/birth certificate linkage though? There have been like a couple impersonators who were found out immediately, a handful of meltdowns... it's pretty tame from what I've seen.

I never use Discord for Gemstone, but there is no way I would link my account information from a game to a Discord server.
I get what they're trying to do, but no thank you. That's like people that log into other services using their Facebook login, or etc. etc. Linking services like that is a no-no for me. Keep everything separate.
That being said - I really wish they used the ANNOUNCE window more in game. SF has a nice window for it, and they should provide notifications in game more regularly + set up a "board" in game they can update once a day with some command that brings up "item A, B, C, etc." for those of us who don't use Discord.
Would be easy to implement, take maybe 15 minutes a day to update once formatted. And bingo bango, you're done.
Edit:
Now that think about my recommendation: That solves my paranoia of linking anything via computer account, but not the concerns of many of their Discord being associated with their actual account (which has their personal information) and the possible ramifications of that. So deleting my recommendation, as I fully understand not wanting that either.

I got in a discussion with Wyrom on this a couple days ago on the discord general channel. I feel this pain but every time i bring it up (including this time) it just kinda gets dismissed. I was suggesting they put a changelog in the announcements window of the game. Or news command. Or somewhere. His response was dig through the announcements folder in the officials, which is "where everything gets posted". First the officials are painful to use and not searchable. Second a lot of shit doesn't get posted there.

They do have the NEWS verb in game....but it's been a long time since I looked through it. They could certainly go back to using it if they haven't been doing so already.
Just checked out the NEWS verb, they do have some updated info there on recent changes....though it's not everything and could use more love from the GMs to make sure all the news is available in an easy to find location in game.

I get ya. The thing that's odd to me mainly is, once the format is established in game - it's no extra work to cut+paste and drop from Discord, forums, internal documents, or anywhere else into the "in-game board".
Literally ctrl+c, alt+tab, ctrl+v. 10 seconds - and that way everyone can access the official updates in game.
They done so many amazing updates to formatting, information dissemination of game mechanics in game, etc. that this seems like a no-brainer easy layup.

It's because Simu nerfs so much shit, they'd rather not announce it, so they just bury the needle in a Discord haystack in the middle of the night.

I don't have a link, but they basically ignore all the bullshit Rift mechanics...spell strip, being rifted (I think), some other stuff I'm forgetting, etc.
It should be in THIS THREAD (http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?123623-What-will-Simu-do-without-the-whales) somewhere.
EDIT: Nvm, here it is:
Lahke says, "Okay, I have a pair of interesting boots. They are NOT unarmed combat."
Lahke says, "These boots were once owned by an assassin for hire who demanded payment for services in the form of magical blessings. They eventually passed hands after the assassin met an untimely demise, but these boots will benefit those who hunt in The Rift. These boots will not only prevent you from spellburst on entry, they will protect you from the random spell strips. There is a chance they can protect you from spirit loss, as well. They will prevent coin loss on exit from the area, but an alternative offering will suffice. Ice patches can be destroyed, as well as phylacteries, without any limit on usage."
Lahke says, "7mil."
Lormaek says, "Bid."
For what it's worth, or not worth, $28k is hugely overpaying for that shit. But there's a 99% chance that Lormaek and Estild or whoever at Simu already worked out some sort of deal beforehand to create this item for him, probably with an already agreed on price.
Sort of like that gem splitter Warclaidh picked up last run, since he does literally nothing but run gem bounties all day.
There's no way they just happened to make those items randomly at that time.

Yeah he's in Scatter and you don't get rifted out of there, unless you stand in front of the fissure in which case you can get pulled through that. He doesn't use it in a group but it seems like he could if he wanted to. The cancel of spell stripping extends to the whole room if you are in the same room with him.

Wyrom can see everyone's redeemed totals (and unredeemed amounts in containers) and that is why he started, at the top. He's that mentioned many times in the rooms.

Why the need for conspiracy theories?
This is an 80's era game played by a very small population with certain qualities: intelligent/strong imaginations, eccentric, unconventional thinkers. People with these qualities have a tendency to generate success in the real world, and successful people will be overrepresented in the GS4 population vs the general population. These people will also tend to be single.
Contrast this with the theory that someone is slipping BS/silvers in a game that:
- is now a part of a publicly traded company, so that conduct rises to the status of embezzlement, racketeering, some sort of securities fraud, etc. that makes them liable for state and possibly federal offenses
- is all in text so asset transfers of any significance are permanently logged and easily traced
- has participants and staff logged and identified, for the most part
- has "products" that the "owners" have zero right in or claim to (according to game policy), that do not qualify as assets, and that can be modified, removed, deleted at any time without warning.
The simplest explanation tends to be the likeliest one.
