View Full Version : Manly Men Kick Metro/Emo Butt

Washington Times report on new survey (http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20050407-121528-6317r.htm). A majority of the women surveyed said they liked strong, dependable, rough and ready men over manicured metros.

But, is this study really anything new? Some chicks claim to love men who eyebrow shape, but do they really? What makes men men and women women is what attraction is all about.

04-07-2005, 11:21 AM
This is completely untrue.

Every Wendy wants her Peter Pan. At least that's my experience with women who were once with men, married or not.

04-07-2005, 12:27 PM
The reason that I put work into my appearance is that it is only fair. I'm all for being metro because I demand that a woman do the same. Would be pretty pathetic if I was a slob and had high standards.

I agree with the findings. While women are generally like OMG hot pretty boy, the _best_ women are the ones who like dependable, semi-rugged, secure men.

Metro's tend to be insecure, from what I understand, and Emo's, well, lets just say they tend to be pushovers, which women hate and get tired of in the grand scheme of things.

that doesn't mean that these rugged individuals need to be complete assholes. They just need to be the dominant partner, and be willing to do something nice every once in awhile.

04-07-2005, 12:37 PM
The problem is that Emo and Metro should not be used in any comparison. It's like comparing beef to gasoline.

Metro is maintenance only on his own time. Emo just is always depressed and brings people down, which affects others.

I don't think it's necessarily true that a virile man with strong principles cannot also be a man who cares about his appearance, dresses for success, and is not afraid to connect on an emotional level. These qualities are not mutually exclusive.

04-07-2005, 12:46 PM
This is true, but metro usually means going above and beyond the call of duty.

Wife beaters come to mind. They go above and beyond, imo.

04-07-2005, 12:51 PM
As far appearance. I don't think you can compare havn't an excellent fashion sense with kicking the shit out of your wife. I think one is positive and one is negative as hell.

I think there are degrees to metro. A guy that worries about how well he dresses and his hair for example can be considered metro. But so can a guy that gets facials and gets manicures/pedicures regularly.

I think most women would prefer a guy that didn't spend as much time and money in a salon as they would.

[Edited on 4-7-2005 by Jadewolff]

04-07-2005, 12:52 PM
I definately do the first part, but I do not really need facials. Probably would get them if they called for it. I know I need to hit a tan salon with my translucent ass. I just don't see how that would negatively impact anything, just be positive.

- Arkans You really can't and that's the truth. But there is a certain look attached to the label, in most cases, and an emotional mind set that accompanies it as well. A good number of women seem to be attracted to it.

Then again, you have the high class pimps and hustlers who get manicures, pedicures, hair styled, and so on and I guess they sort of fit both types of profiles.

Bah, this study is obviously too generalized and I don't have enough information available to argue the semantics.

Actually, if you were to take the example of person that is very metro (the "constant" facials/pedicures/manicures) then I think this study would be right.

All you have to do is look at the breakdown. They're comparing electronics with designer clothes. They say that women want a guy that's easy going. But they also say that women want a guy that cares about the way he dresses.

I think this study is pretty accurate if you think about the way they describe what a woman wants without sticking with the terminology they use.

The terminology they use is misleading though which is why I can see why at first glance, someone would think it's faulty.

HarmNone
04-07-2005, 01:28 PM
That's the problem I have with the article, as well. The terminology used leads people to assume the extremes of both types. Rarely do those extremes actually exist. Most people are combinations of types, using that which suits them and discarding that which doesn't.

And, I guess you'd also have to look at the breakdown of the type of women that participated in this poll. Education, family background, socio-economic status, financialy stability and security come into play for most women when it comes to attraction. I guess in general terms it may be something to go off but it's a bit too vague for pratical reasons.

*Also, assuming no men voted.

I think many more things need to be factored in, not just looks and how often one keeps up their appearance.

What about manly metro men?

04-07-2005, 01:48 PM
I think that is the catagory that most metro men fall into. Manly metro. They'll take care of themselves, do what it does to look better, but also not be afraid to slug down a few beers and laugh with the guys. It's what seperates metro and homo.

I still take excellent care of myself, but I couldn't give a flying shit what my hair looks like anymore.

Beware TMI to follow:

For some unknown , bored reason , I shaved yesterday (Points downwards). I used this Mint Source shaveing gel and when I rinsed, I actually screamed.

04-07-2005, 02:13 PM
Emo != Metro or the other way around. Emo guys never get laid. They are like.. "OH SHIT I AM THE NICE GUY WHY CANT I GET LAID!?!?!" the reason metro men are metro is just for the sole of throwing it into girls. It's all about appearance!

Well, its a degree of self image. Both have some mesure of self image. I think the distinction between manly and metro is that metro takes it super extreme... salons, day spas, manicure pedicure. Regular guys like to keep clean, dress nice and that too, but don’t go to the extremes metros do.

I can't be metro because I'm too big for stores like Express, BR, A+F, etc. I tried a pair of pants on at express and they were loose in the waist bot retarded tight across my butt and thighs, it was like wearing leather pants instead of denim. Same goes for any shirt from those stores nothing fits my shoulders and arms anymore. Hell the biggest coat Express carries is like a 46 and I'm at least a 50.

Obsessed over hygiene/appearance = Metro

Basic hygiene is expected of all men.

The line is when it is taken to the (stereotypical) feminine extent.

AnticorRifling

I don't know about that. What's defined as an obsession. I, of course, do basic hygiene but I also take a few extra steps that I do 1 for me and 2 because I think the ladies appreciate the extra effort. Mostly I do it for me though.

heh, I was with a group of friends the other day, consisted of 2 women, myself and another guy.. we were hanging out, outside an ice cream shop, and noticed that there was a DSW shop.. (this is a big shoe store that women HAVE to go in everytime they see one, seriously, I think they have innate radar that tells them if there's one within .25 mile radius)
I tend to dress nice, I'm a jean and t-shirt kinda guy, mostly, but will get dressed up on occasion, and own some expensive _tasteful_ clothing/shoes, etc.
anyway, I'm just standing there listening to my friends talk about shoes, and my buddy chimes in and starts talking about how he almost bought a pair of prada for himself...

now, i thought this guy was cool, but then he mentioned that he almost bought a pair of PRADA shoes, prada is some clothing design or something like that..

All I can think of is...

"Why spend the next 20 years in jail 'cause someone smudged your puma?"

Yeah, I'd get pissed if someone stepped on my shoes.

But anyway, I was a few drinks under and I guess this other guy was too. Words let to shouting and shouting led to him pushing me so I just gave him a crack across the face and just went after him. I got pulled off and we had to run before the cops came :(

I don't understand why a "redneck" would be in a "club".

Please explain details? Dance club? He wore jeans and sneakers? I'm not getting this.

No, I just call him "redneck" because he was acting all belligerent. Yes, it was a dance club, no, no sneakers and jeans. Just someone I call a redneck.

Honestly, I'd be pissed too but I'd give the person the benefit of the doubt, opportunity to apologize and all that jazz before throwing a tantrum.
