I have to buy a family vehicle. Needs 3 rows of seats.

So far it looks like a goddamn Minivan is the best option.

Right now I'm looking at a 2021 Chrysler Pacific Touring Limited. Great gas mileage, entertainment shit in the back for the kids, and lots of sweet features. And 82 MPG, with a 1320 mile range on a tank of gas.

Anyone have this vehicle? I'm considering the Honda Odyssey too.

Mazda CX-9 has three rows, I think. We’re considering upgrading from

Do the Honda Odyssey - they're good. If you are needing 3 rows of seats the minivan is hands down the best option.

If we had 3, 100% minivan. All the minivans are comparable. But what I like about the Pacifica is the seats that fold into the floor. The Toyota you have to unbolt and take out the second row. I don't even know if the Honda's come out.

I think you'll find with the 3 row SUVs, you just run out of room so fast. We run out of room in our SUV with 2 kids and for big trips have to lug around the roof rack.

82 MPG? Is this a typo or am I way behind on the latest advances in boosting gas mileage?

Minivans are surprisingly awesome to drive nowadays... if you can get past the whole driving a minivan thing. If you don’t want to go that route, you can try out a GMC Acadia. It’s toted around my three kids and their shit for several years now. It’s decent on gas mileage, not great ... Of course it may be better now, mines a 2013.

Well that's cheating.

1340 miles on 16 gallons of gas is 1340 miles on 16 gallons of gas. That is honestly the biggest reason the Pacifica Hybrid is at the top of my list now. I've heard great things about the Odyssey too though. I think I just need to test drive both.

It seems like a no brainer...let me know what you think about the two, especially re: folding seats. The vans are just so much easier. no struggling for room with the door wide open putting the kids in the seat, or the kids banging the car next to you because you have sliding seats...tons of room for all your stuff....easy to drive. Once they grow up, you can give it to one of them and buy a corvette or something.

Lol. Honestly I would have cared 10 plus years ago when I was driving around my mustang. With kids, and now in the corona age, it's hard to GAF about anything, except getting through the day. Shower? Whatever. Clothes? Sweatpants and sweatshirt, even in telecoms with executive level leadership. Shave and comb hair? Negative. Minivan? Hell yeah, make sure you throw in leather seats and 27 speaker sound system.

I mean, you could go with a BMW X7. Big nice twin turbo V8 upfront, 0 to 60 in slightly less than 5 seconds, and 3 rows of seats with heating and cooling in the seats themselves, all in an SUV that weighs.....quite a lot.

Depends on how much GS money you're rolling in, though.

I test drove an X5, and it felt big (of course, my daily is an M4). The X5 was parked next to an X7, and the X7 makes the X5 look like a cute little baby. The X7 is ginormous.

Minivans are easier than SUVs to get kids in and out of.

I was looking at a Tahoe or a Suburban when I considered an SUV, but even then, the minivan seems better... And a bit cheaper.

But can the minivan do 60 in less than 5 seconds, and run the 1/4 mile in 12? And consume huge amounts of gas while doing so and scream conspicuous consumption at the same time?

All I need to be able to do is drag race school buses. The thing I did love about the suburban (I rented one for our last family trip back in January) was that the kids in the back are waaay the fuck back there. It is almost like they were in a different vehicle. Loved it.

I like the capability and cool guy factor of the suburban but as a grocery getter and kid hauler, it is going to suck driving around the tiny and crowded target parking lot and chik fil a drive thru. the minivan is just as big on the inside, but will drive as big as a sedan almost.

Honestly I am about to trade in my ford edge for a minivan the more I think about it lol.

It is a bitch to maneuver around and the gas mileage is shit. Plus they start at 60kish for the base model. I can get the top of the line model of almost any minivan for that much.

I owned a 64 suburban in the 90s, when I lived in Seattle. It paid for itself 4x over in reduced transfer station fees during remodel projects. Loved that truck with its passenger vehicle plates and 1500# load capacity.

I don't think you "need" a minivan with 2, but with a midsize SUV (Ford Edge), I would love more room because we always have a bunch of "stuff" when we visit grammy and pop pop, or friends out of town. We do have enough room in it, but loading up the fancy stroller and dog is a lot of space.

We do have a bike rack for back, and a c

If it wasn't paid off, and if I needed a new car today, it would be a minivan.

A minivan is best until they're 6-8 or so. The auto-open doors make it so much easier and it's also easier to climb in the back to resolve any number of minor disasters. My boys are 15 months apart; I hated having a minivan but would do it again with little kids. Finally got a nice SUV when they were in booster seats.

I currently have a Toyota FJ, which I may sell, along with my wife's Prius. I can't drive the Prius with the rear facing carseats in the back, and probably not any different with the FJ. I'll miss the FJ, but it's over 13 years old. It is the best vehicle I've ever owned when it comes to driving in snow, but that's kind of moot if you can't load it up.

I'd have a hard time coming off a vehicle doing 1000+ miles on a tank. It's a device to get from A to B with the least hassle as you manage your family. Forget about the cool factor and prioritize efficiency and cost cutting would be my recommendation.

Congrats on whatever you buy and hope is light on maintenance for you.

Edit: You could always go with the Wagon Queen Family Truckster station wagon though. A classic!

Archi - can you just keep the FJ? Sounds like its paid off. Might be handy for just a knockaround car/grocery getter for yourself. I'm guessing if you get a new van and trade in the FJ, the dealer is going to give you like 1-2k max. That's approx 16-33 dollars on a standard 60 month car loan, plus a little extra for just minimum liability insurance, which could be offset by not getting takeout 1x a month.

It's a Toyota so it will last 300k+ miles.

I wish I still had my 2001 mustang to zip around town in with my kids...keep us updated!

Actually FJs have amongst the highest resale values amongst used cars on Kelly Bluebook. Last time I looked, it was around 10k for a 13 year old one in decent shape Kind of crazy really, to get 10k back on a vehicle that was 28k new 13 years ago. It's blast in the snow though, which is probably why I've kept it. But I need something else stat.

Just traded my 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan in for a 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Touring L. It is a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, or a PHEV. Gets 80 miles to the gallon after you use up all the battery. Fucking beautiful vehicle. It has Automated Cruise Control, where you set the speed and just maintain lane and it does whatever needed with stopping and speeding up based on cars infront of you. You still need to stop are lights and stop signs, but it'll stop and go if someone else stops at a light ahead of you.

I've driven a little bit today. I have used 1 miles with of gas, and the battery wasn't even fully charged when I got it.

There were only three within a 200 mile area of me. Originally the one I now have was taken with a deposit, like right before I got there. They called me that last night after I had put on a deposit for one 150 miles away (and was still in transit), and said the deal fell through and the customer was extremely irate, so I went the very next day (today) and got it. And then also got my deposit back from the other one.

I don't know if it is because of the chip shortage or what, they are just rare right now.

They have more space than all but the largest SUVs. Stow and go the second and third row seats and you can put a twin bed in there.
