Which of the well known diets have you tried/know someone tried and worked? A friend of mine has tried them all and she is now on the weight watchers one. This is all she can talk about now, its the miracle cure for her etc.
Personally I have never gone on one, mostly because if I have had to lose weight the most I have ever had to lose was 10 pounds. I am a firm believer that "diets" are not the way to go, as you will always put it back on when you aren't regulated anymore. So what do you think?

I used a good one and it worked damn good.
No eating for 3-4 days, NOTHING at all.
You only drink water and you drink A TON of water.
When your 3-4 days is over, you eat SMALL quantity, cereal, good bread, v8, vegetable, nothing fatty.
After 1 week, you eat normal. You'll see a huge difference with your appetite and you'll lose a good amount of weight.
Very good for the health too.
The only "diets" I've tried are natural.. i.e. running, walking, dancing, biking, SPORTS, and sex... whatever makes me sweat.

i would say the best diet is to not eat junk food and get exercise
that usually wins.. and the people who say it doesn't haven't tried hard enough

Any goal of losing more than 1 1/2 a week is unhealthy, by medical standards. Best thing to do is plenty of exercise, and having 5-6 small meals throughout the day. This will boost your metabolism, which will help get the weight off easier, and make it easier to keep it off if you slowed down the exercise or went back to normal 3 meals a day.

Before boosting your metabolism, you must clean yourself.
And there isn't many ways to do that
Eating breakfast every day also helps. A well balanced one is even better.

Caloric Restriction. Cut back on about 40% of your total caloric intake. Works miracles. After the initial period of feeling hungry, you start gaining a ton of energy, think clearer and your body runs more efficiently. Helps prevent and slow down tumor growth. The key to weight loss is to not lose more than approximately 10% of your total weight in about a 12 month period. It turns on a gene called the "thrifty" gene, which people can debate whether or not it exists. But it makes it so your body holds on to fat more efficiently because it believes you to be going through a famine and is preparing your body for another ... meaning next time you try to lose weight it'll be that much harder.
There's a boatload of information and studies on the topic. There's several ways to do it, the 40% is the simplest. Do a search or U2U me and I can help lead you in the right direction.

No offense X, but I'll have to advise against this one, medically. My health promotions officer beat this into my head because I wanted to try it when I brought it past her.

It's not everyone that will allow such things dude, it's very hard to do and require a LOT of willpower.
And it's healthy if you do it right.
So in fact, we're all saying it's a question of willpower, ether if you walk, eat less, eat better, eat none...

But learn about it first because last time I told someone, they fasted for four days then called me up asking me what to do next.
Cod liver oil can clean your system like none other.... unless you intentionally get Giardia from someone already sick... or drinking the water in Cancun.

I have two close friends who are on the low-carb diets and it works really well for them. I have a family member who was on Weight Watchers and it worked tremendously for her as well. All three people included changing their excersize as well and drinking more water. It ended up being a life choice for 2 of the 3 that didn't come back later to haunt them. The 3rd is still in the beginning stages, so we'll see.

That reminds me of my corpsman training. The person who was practicing doing IV on me, after inserting the IV, stood up, took her hands off me, and turned to the instructor, "Now what?", as I was bleeding out and soaking the floor with my blood. I wish I had a pic of me with as white as the instructor told me I was.

The South Beach Diet is excellent and worked extremely well for me. Aside from losing weight, it improved my blood chemistry to a fantastic degree, reducing both by cholesterol and triglycerides level. Nor is it really difficult to stay on as it isn't a 'low' anything diet but rather concentrates on having you eat the right foods. Though it starts out being low fat and low carb, it does re-introduce the 'right' ones (such as whole grains and olive and canola oils).
And once one's desired weight is reached, following the recommendations of how to keep it that way is not difficult. And of course, exercise with it is highly recommended.

I once ran from hospital becouse i didn't want to be stuck there overnight.
I managed to sneak out after telling them I need to use the phone so noone would worry , then escaped.
I was running back home in my back-exposing-see-through gown when I saw the IV plug still in my arm. I pulled it out , NOT expecting it to be about 3 inches long, and watched in horror as it spurted blood.
Picture it. . You'd have either shit yourself and run away or laughed and pointed.
Good times.

The fuck does that have to do with diets...?
Anyway, when I wanted to drop the 25 or so beer lbs I gained last year, I started up playing tennis and swimming again.

Heh. I dont usually do the diet thing but I wanted to look good in my black bikini for an event so I tried some cabbage soup diet my mom emailed me about. I lost 10 lbs in a week and a half.
I only substituted the lunch soup routine for a vitamin shake every day instead because I need them for energy. :D I also did a little extra running. A run in the morning and a run at night every other day (excepting weekends).
Fair warning: this diet makes you fart like a friggin fart machine.

You have to try something that you know you can live with for the rest of your life. Diets don't always work because it changes what you would normally eat, and then once you lose the weight, you go back to eating how you used to and gain it all back.
Eat smaller meals however more of them a day, at least three or four times, and exercise. And don't deprive yourself of anything. If you crave a chocolate bar, go ahead and eat it, just make sure to exercise a little more than that. Eating should be done in moderation, but the exercising is key.
People who say that you don't need to exercise to maintain your weight are the people who are going to gain their weight back eventually.

I did the south beach diet last year too and it worked really well. It wasn't that the smart way (exercise and controlling what you eat) wouldn't have worked. It's just that I didn't have the knowledge of the way my body reacts with certain foods to now how to work it well. Being on the South Beach diet gave me some firm guidelines to follow that ended up changing the way I eat in general. It's a year later and I haven't gained back any weight and still eat just as healthy. The biggest emphasis it has is on fresh veggies and whole grains which really really help your overall health in general.

I agree 100%. If you don't know what eating is going to look like on the other side of your 'diet' how can you succeed?
Your diet is what you eat on a daily basis.
I sometimes lose the discipline it takes to excercise. At 47 it is just now dawning on me what a commitment it is to stay fit.

You know, some of the points above really beg for repeating. A DIET IS A LIFE LONG CHOICE!!! Not just something you do to lose some weight and hope it stays off.
Do something you are comfortable with and control your calories. It is all a matter of self control. Do not get the greasy cheese fries or the candy bars and for fucks sake, stay away from the soda. Eat three controlled meals a day at a schedualed time and you'll be all set! Don't forget pleanty of water and exercise. Worked for me.

I'll have to agree with Arkans, who is agreeing with CT, so it's an agreement by proxy only!
I eat like a horse and don't really monitor what I'm shoving in. I also work out for an hour and a half 4 days a week. My diet is exercise. I know people who are comfortable with a low carb diet, occasionally eating starchy foods or a snickers bar. They are comfortable with that.
You have to do something that you can live with, but without some sort of physical activity and hydration ... it's not going to do much good.
Crash dieting so you can look thinner at a reunion or something will almost always come back to haunt you. Lose 20, gain 25 back and out the cash for that dress you can no longer wear.

I have done 2, sort of.
The first one I moved into my mom's house and stopped eating all the damn time. That worked pretty well.
Then I signed up for tennis and play that for a couple hours every non-rainy weekday. This is also working pretty well, and building muscle too. Granted - not football player muscle, but existant muscle, which is a step up.

Before I got pregnant I was doing the south beach diet also, and I loved it. It took a little getting used to, since I really had no clue about anything. I never had a problem with OVER eating.. I just didnt eat very well when I did. No balance whatsoever.
It definitely gave me some firm guidelines to follow and the food actually tasted like food.
Its helped me out a ton as far as figuring out whats healthy to eat for the baby, and even though I'm not following it now, I'm definitely using the guidelines to help me balance things. It also helped my husbands cholesterol go down amazingly, and a good friend of mine doesn't have to take insulin anymore because of his results with it.
BUT, I also had to go to the gym and actually move my ass too. I'm one of those people who can look at food and gain weight, so anyone who says you don't or shouldnt have to exercise is nuts.
A healthy balance of both is best.

55 pounds? that brought you up to what 155? j/k
I am lucky in the fact that one food does not hold much appeal for me other then fruits. Add to that my riding horses/working with them and the labs and of course the kids I am never at a loss for getting enough of a work out.
The friend I spoke about in the beginning of this thread has gone from 170 pounds to 226, she goes from one diet to another and won't believe me that diets are not it, it is in the changing of your eating habits that is key.

I've never been obese, and I've never been skinny. But for most of my adult life I've been a bit round. Overweight, but "plus" size stores don't have anything that fits. They're way too big since most of that stuff starts at a size 14 and I'm a 12.
For me, the only way I can really lose weight, is to get fit. That has -nothing- to do with dieting in my case, and -everything- to do with getting off my ass and exercising.
I also need to start eating more veggies, but that'll come in a week or two once we start cooking outside on the grill again.
Once you add veggies to a diet that lacks them, you get fuller faster and all those nasty fried things we all know and love won't fit in our full stomachs so we either cut them out of our diet or reduce them drastically.
Tell your friend to try that, if she is really obsessed about her weight. Add more raw or fresh-grilled veggies with every meal. A salad for lunch, corn on the cob for supper, or steamed broccoli, or even cold broccoli with tziziki (an amazing greek dressing made with yogurt, cucumber, and garlic, awesome as a veggie dip). She'll fill up on all those GOOD veggies and won't even miss the french fries.
