New hwmepwner (boy...that was lamer than I thought it would be) here again.
I'm debating getting movers to move my crap as opposed to me doing it ala Ryder or some such again.
Yeah, I know, I have so little crap to move...they'll be reaming me on the price since it is just really in town anyway, but god damnit...I hate moving my shit!
So...bite the bullet and prop up the service economy with a mover like Allied or Mayflower? Or go with the self-move horror show of not knowing whether or not you'll have the equipment you'll need, or if it will work?
Here's a pic of my wife and I last time we did this...I was longer than an 18 wheeler! Dirk Diggler of the Road! God was that scary.

Go with movers, less stress and cheaper in the long run in many ways. I did it the last time I moved, and also plan on it with my move in Dec/Jan.

I moved myself, all I needed was my full size truck, my buddies, pizza and beer.
If you get a mover make sure you get a reputable one. Ask for references and check them. I would ask for recent references and those from a few years ago.
I don't want to scare you but there are many scammers in the moving industry. At the end of the move, but before they unload the truck, they will demand more money than agreed upon. If you refuse to pay the increased amount they will drive off and hold your furniture hostage.

Yeah, I know someone who had a similar scam happen to them., that's why I will only go with Mayflower or Allied, real movers, not these "I've got a 20 year old U-haul, sure I'll move your stuff" outfits. My friend's movers got "lost" and couldn't find the place they were supposed to go to. They charged him a "difficult location" fee of $200.
As for the buddies and beer thing...the problem is that I currently live in the ghetto of Southeast DC. I don't want my friends having to come out here to move me out. Also...I don't want to think what would happen if one of my friends broke my TV or something. I'd rather have the security of insurance with the movers.
I'll wait to see what the quotes from the movers are. It'll be about $400 to move my stuff myself I figure, with labor and the cost of a truck with insurance. If the movers are about $500 or so, I'll go with them.
Excellent point xtc. I watched a documentary on people who were getting ripped off by these mafia type independants. Definately go with Allied or another bonded and nationally known company if you dont want to do it yourself. They'll come in and do an estimate, ask you if you wish to pack or if you want them to send packers in, etc... alot better than 3 bubbas moving company...

I've always used Allied and have never had a problem. :)
Whatever you do, DONT SHIP ALL YOUR STUFF VIA UPS! Either brave the road, or the wallet.
UPS smashed half our shit. Tamral! WTF?

Already had the Allied guy come and do an inspection for an estimate. It was kind of funny, the guy they sent was an ex-DC cop. Allied wasn't taking any chances with my neighborhood. The guy said they'll probably have to leave a guy at the truck the whole time when they come too. Probably a good idea.
God...I'll be glad to be out of this place...I can't believe I haven't been held up yet. They must think I'm some Russian crime boss and don't want to mess with me.
