Is it possible and viable to make a ranger who's attack is primarily CS/casting based? I know they probably have like 5 attack spells in the game, natures fury, spikethorn, tangleweed and fire spirit, and unbalance as well.

if so, what would a training plan look like? I might imagine the only weapon I would wield as one is a THW like a runestave/quarterstaff

It might be possible, but I doubt that it's viable. The earliest spells attack spells there are at 10, and one's maneuver and the other's CS based. As a semi, you won't be doing super well in the CS department, and 10 mana is a lot to blow on a spell you're going to be using for a while.

It could be done, but you would want to be 50+ before doing it. Even 2x'ing spells, you wouldn't be that hot at either circle. You could spike your way through the game, but it would be long and time consuming.

Also, tangleweed is a spell you prolly don't want to rely on for damage. The costs for mental stats is horrid, so training for a runestaff isn't the smart way to go, either. Spell Aim for a Ranger makes me shudder in thought.

Yeah, a number of people tried the "druid" path a while back, it was a bit of a fad for a while, and while it would be possible with dilligent work and careful target selection, there are easier ways to play a ranger.

You could do it if you picked up brawling and voln fu, otherwise it'd be impossible to be 100% spells

That's what Keller does, I've done some brawling paths, they are lots of fun. Rangers are made for voln-fu

It would have been more viable when spike was better. In todays game, I don't see it happening.
