Something I always wondered about was how much silvers I could earn through normal play of the game?
Without doing any merchanting or attending special events but perhaps with skinning and careful prey selection about how much could I reasonably be expected to earn at say levels 0-50th?

I can't give you an exact answer to your stated level range. But long ago I tried to count how much silvers I made (this is before I got into any merchanting), and I estimated I made around 40-43m worth of silvers combined between leveling one character to their 60s, and another to their 40s. This is through hunting mostly in richer places like Zul Logoth or River's Rest, and using up all my loot boosts whenever I got them. This is also based on a couple of years ago, when mid-level places like the Citadel did not have MA groups regularly roaming through them.

There are places where I was making ~50-100k per hunt between skinning and loot, I'm sure there are places where you can make a lot more. Like bunny said it's all about going where people don't tend to hunt/be and there is very little hunting pressure.

My first ever play through I didn't pick up any boxes, only had a pouch that held 20lbs worth of items, no trading ranks and a dark elf trading penalty when I reached lvl 79 I had 25m silvers. I then canceled my account because people told me OTF was a nightmare hunting ground where monsters steal all your items and you die all the time, I thought sod that that's enough gemstone for me then.

Well after they get you all fattened up from 0-80 of course they’re going to steal all their stuff back!

I had a hunting spot with my rogue that I really liked. Between the abysmal skinning skills he had (roughly 1 out of 5 kills he'd skin, and poorly at that), the fact that the hunting ground was almost always void of people and he could easily pick his own boxes.....pop a couple of major loot boosts and with 30 minutes of total hunting (hunt 15 minutes, take 15 to open all boxes and sell loot and repeat) he could drag in 250k+ an hour. There were times he'd have 2 dozen+ boxes from a hunt. He'd have to ring into town quick and have a F2P character sitting at a table to watch 10-12 boxes so he could go back out before the major loot boost ended.
He couldn't do this non-stop in the area, eventually the treasure would dip. So I did this with him 3 or 4 times a week and easily pull in a million a week. He hunted the area for almost 10 levels. Easily pulled in 50-60mil+ just hunting him there.
Characters that I have that don't skin and just do treasure drops (and can't open their own boxes). Maybe 1-2 mil per level once you hit that level 20 range up to around level 50.
If you skin and do it well and you vary your hunting areas every few hunts throughout the day, I hear you can make decent silvers with skinning when compared to normal treasure drops.
If you do skin, always, always, always BUNDLE the skins (if possible, most skins can be bundled) when you sell them. The system appears to take all the individual skin prices and adds them up before truncating and you get roughly a 1% bonus in overall return on your silvers. It may not seem like much, but an extra few silvers every sale of bundles added up over time helps get you a bit more silver in your bank account.

I used to make about 1m from 1 hour of murdering the crap out of stone sentinels and banshees, that was the best I have done, but I overleveled and havent found something that good since.
Basically I would bring back about 40 boxes, it would take some time to pick them, and also purify the gems (bard), but once everything was sold it would be worth about 1m.
(if the contents of each box are worth 12.5k, some boxes in sentinals had 2 diamonds and coins, that's 500k for 40 boxes, and then you also have gems & coins directly from looting the probably 200 doods you murdered to get those 40 boxes)
Obviously it would be more optimal from an exp point of view to kill like 10 critters come back to town and clear your head, but screw optimal exp, its way more fun to get 40 boxes and see whats in them
