View Full Version : Hurling Questions

So I may tack on a ethereal string to my Cat D and I need to clear up a few questions. Hurling seems mysterious and kinda elitist but hopefully some of you can elucidate on my limited understanding.

Q’s

1. Has anything changed with thrown recently that would limit weapon loss or otherwise make thrown more accessible?

2. Is there a cheaper alternative to ethereal strings other than getting a bandolier?

3. Is a bonded ‘poor man’s’ returner safe and viable?

4. Main advantages to hurling?

5. Also why limited to Javelins, Spears, axes, and hammers? Why can’t we hurl a morningstar which has higher DF’s?

The recover hurl verb is huge.

I have a ranger that carries around 4 plain 5x handaxes and I have two scripts that I execute to hunt. I changed up the archery script that Briarfox had to accomodate my hurling and I just hurl my 4 weapons and then use my script to recover them. I can show examples later if you would like? Could save you a lot of dough if you are looking for a poor mans way of doing things. You could also take those cheap weapons and load them with cheap flares and boom.

Sorry I didn't answer them appropriately.

1. The recover verb and Recover Hurl specifically.

2. Yes but it will require more work on your end if you are really deadset on making it work.

3. Don't play a class with bond so can't help with this one

4. it is a little quicker for me (4 sec aimed and 3 second unaimed) which is why I like it. I also like the idea of throwing weapons.

5. So you can hurl anything, but the RT is going to crush you depending on what you hurl. This is Simu trying to "keep it real" and using things commonly known with hurling/throwing. But I suppose if your stats were set up accordingly you could hurl a Morning Star. I tried with a pair of mace's but the RT was too high (8-9 seconds per toss unaimed). I was low level so that could have played a role.

So, I tested this for a while for funsies, and here's the thing.

RECOVER HURL is a great addition, but ultimately you will have up to, I believe, 8 seconds of wait time before you can recover a recently hurled weapon. Lets say you hurl something, kill the target with that attack, have 4s RT, search, now you're standing around for the next 3-4 seconds waiting for RECOVER HURL to allow you to retrieve your weapon. This is why people haven't jumped onto the thrown weapon ship.

I believe the main draws to thrown weapons is that you're up against a different DS calculation, which can be lower DS for some targets, and higher for others. Also, you can TWC hurl and throw two weapons for basically the same RT as throwing a single weapon. Another advantage is that you can snipe from hiding with thrown weapons and not be pulled from hiding with your attacks.

Bonded weapons do return reliably from what I understand. I believe bonded weapons will enter the RECOVER inventory, but if you remain in the room they will return automatically. It is likely faster than RECOVER HURL allows, but not instant, so you can't chain throw and recover your weapon via bonding. You'll still need more than one weapon if you plan to rely on hurling entirely.

As mentioned, you can hurl a lot of weapons. I managed to put a warmage on test, and hurled battle axes w/ 1s RT using 506 and a bunch of air lore (giant warmage). It's a combination of STR and AGI/DEX to determine if you can even hurl some things, and then what RT will be imposed when you do hurl the weapon. For my rogue, I trained in brawling, thrown and TWC, which resulted in a character that could hurl 2x fist-scythes and not lose their parry DS while holding or empty handed. It was fun, but trying out handaxes demonstrated that they were much better hurled weapons and reliably killed without needing the TWC training. So, I switched to shield and thrown weapon training, which was ultimately "safer".

There is talk about making permanent bundles of throwing hammers, axes, javelins, darts etc - which never run out, but which are very limited compared to other throwing weapon options. Like you can't use WPS on the bundle, but you could get a base enchant with bless or something. It's on the shelf due to how heavily people complained about the changes to ammo for ranged combat.

Heh, most excellent fun read.

With that being said I wonder why people still gravitate toward handaxes and spears instead of say broadswords or maces, just preference?

So with the addition of the RECOVER verb is it now impossible to lose your weapon?

And how are people getting less than 5 sec. RTs with hurling heavy weapons? does hurl calculate RT differently?

Traditionally hurled weapons are the hurling weapons of choice for most people. They work functionally with available scripts, while some other weapons won't. You can't put a string on a whip for example,, or even a javelin, because the script indicates the return happening in a way that would not make sense for a either.

RT for hurling is buggy, but base RT unencumbered is pretty reliable. A handaxe swung is typically going to give you a 5 second RT, hurled it's 3 seconds... 4 seconds if you TWC hurl or aim.. The DF is the same for both.

Meanwhile, you bypass most parry defense with hurling, though not EBP.

Combine those the DS bypass and lower RT, and you see the real attraction of hurling: it's faster and more efficient. When I first started hurling, a friend nicknamed me the metal mage, because I could basically hunt like a mage: no set up maneuvers, and 3 second RT, just fire away. In the DR arena I'll switch to TWC hurling which neutralizes most EBP, simply because you're taking your shots 2 at a time. All of this adds up to a lot of TPs to pull off, but smoke em if you got em, as they say. I was probably 2x cap before I dove into TWC hurling.

As for ethereal strings, I wrote up a good summary on them, which I believe is still on the Wiki. The biggest advantage of the strings is that you can put it on whatever you want, within the restrictions of the string. You can go out and buy the most bad ass handaxe or hammer you can find, (without a script!) and turn it into bad ass with DS push down and faster RT. IE: badder ass. The AS boost is sort of icing on the cake. I use it all the time in small amounts, going back and forth from 11x to 14x enchant, and will use it in larger amounts vs boss invaders. Details on how that works are on the wiki.

Regarding the future of hurling: there is talk of updating it, perhaps in similar fashion to the recent ranged updates. Who can say if that will happen, but the current staff's record for completing goals is pretty solid. I just am hopeful that they don't neuter it in the process of making it more readily available.

does hurl calculate RT differently?

I think STR plays the main role in HURLing weapon to determine your RT.

Heavier weapons plus the larger they are, the longer the RT you'll have. I don't remember the specifics, I know someone had posted findings at some point in time (probably on the officials some time ago, and trying to find that info there would be near impossible without a search function).

I think the lowest RT you can achieve is based on the minimum RT of a weapon. Short swords have a 3 second minimum, I think you can throw them in 3 seconds if you have a proper amount of STR. In the examples I listed above, the bastard sword has a minimum of 5 seconds - I was never able to throw it faster than 5 seconds, no matter what my STR was at.

THW are considered large weapons, so they're just that much more difficult to throw. Look at the examples above with the bastard sword - with it GRIPped as OHE and a STR of 100 (35), 6 second RT.
GRIP the same weapon to make it a THW and with STR 100 (35) the RT jumps to 11 seconds and you seem to hit that "you're stupid and injured yourself" aspect of HURLing a heavy, oversized weapon.

My guess as to why folks choose a handaxe a lot would be the higher DF it tends to have over most other OHEs and even most OHBs. Also it does slash and crush, no puncture.

You can throw a maul* pretty well with a 55 strength bonus. As in, quick flick of the wrist messaging, good roundtime.

* needs to be a bit lighter than the maul from the weapon shop

I think someone has a maul bandolier, but it might be a non-prime instance of the game.

My biggest struggle with thrown weapons was the lack of parry DS from any weapon or while in RT after throwing your weapon requiring you to train at least brawling if not both brawling and the weapon base you intend to hurl.

FYI my poor man's scripts at work. Will probably change .recov to .get to make life easier but incredibly effective, I went balls out and spent 6k seashells on those waraxes but when I did this on my Rogue I spent I think 500k for 5 handaxes that were all 4x and random flares.

I've always been amused by the obsession with throwing large weaponry. I guess it's the coolness/badassness factor, but truth be told, your far better off swinging your maul than throwing it. If you're serious about hurling, my suggestion is to focus on what works, with an eye towards impending changes. Hammers, handaxes, javelins, and perhaps spears are where I suggest the OP focus their efforts if you want an efficient, effective attack method. For cool factor maybe pick up a chain spear or chronomage dagger for fun and entertainment, but they'll never be as effective as the aforementioned basics. Throwing other stuff like mauls is a fun distraction.

Also, we should be able to throw smooth stones.

I'm OK with the requirement to train brawling, if it were an elite form of hunting commensurate with that TP investment.

Right now it seems like it takes more TPs to get worse results than you can get with ranged (bows/crossbows)

I’m a dwarf warrior and I thought about using it situationally. Suppose I’m fighting a bunch of snow crones and suddenly a frost giant shows up and I need it out of the fight fast so I hurl my war hammer at the giant’s head killing it then proceed to mstrike the crones.

The visuals are sexy.

Still don’t get why we can’t just hurl morningstars as they have the exact same RT and weight as handaxes. I guess some weapons are never meant to be thrown.

Also, never got a clear answer on whether or not our weapons are guaranteed to be safe with the new recover verb? What if it gets stuck in a monster and it right after get’s imploded? Or how about a ithzir grabs it and fades never to return?

Probably you get the weapon back, but you have to become an indentured servant for the AG for a few years

the entire point of the recover verb is creatures never have a chance to pick it up. hurled weapons don't LODGE anymore, at all, and the weapon is completely inaccessible to them when you hurl it or drop it due to disarm.

it's theoretically impossible to lose your weapon via hurl or being disarmed now, short of just never bothering to recover after it goes into the recover system. if you find a way to lose a weapon via normal disarm mechanics or HURL, it's a bug.

SK 1206 if you want to use those smooth stones as a projectile!

Step 1: Buy SK 1206 item from Simu
Step 2: ????
Step 3: Profit!

Aside from the TP cost savings and stat requirements (which you'll be paying for if you're in the returner market, obviously)....how do you figure that?

If you have a returner and the associated melee and thrown training, aimed hurled shots are nearly identical to normal melee counterpart but with no parry and 2-3 seconds faster. RT is king in gemstone.

Hey guys I’ve been messing around with both Handaxe and Morningstars, I can get the handaxe down to 3 secs but the stars are stubborn at 5 secs.

Anyone know what I’m doing wrong?

You're not doing anything wrong. While I wouldn't recommend morningstar hurling, I guess someone might as well test the boundaries.

This is with 56 strength bonus (and for what its worth a combined 54 dex/agi bonus). I think the roundtime included AIMING (because I normally use bows and have aim set). So that probably added a second. Not like you would ever want to hurl without aiming though.

Just got done cobbling together some SF scripts for all this - they may need a little tweaking in the future as I play more with this character. So far, things are pretty entertaining.
