View Full Version : Computer died, no Dreavenings until I can get it fixed

So my computer decided to stop working earlier today. I’m hoping it’s just the power supply and I’ve already ordered a new one that will supposedly be here tomorrow, but I have my doubts on that.

I’m just hoping it is the power supply and it’s not that everything in my computer fried somehow. The last time I backed up my lich folder was a few weeks ago so I’m gonna lose some Dreavening stats for everyone if the hard drive did fail, not to mention other changes I have made to various Dreavening related scripts in that time I have also been working a lot on a new hunting script so my guys can all hunt together instead of individually and that for sure hasn’t been backed up at all so that’s gonna be fun if I have to redo all that again.

In any case if the power supply comes tomorrow and that fixes everything then Dreavenings tomorrow. If it’s not the power supply then I’ll probably just buy another computer so that will be a week or two or more for that.

What specifically is it doing?

Also unless the hard drive is just fucked, you should be able to back all that up. Which you should always have a copy of your GS folders on Dropbox or something.

Surely you didn't store all that data on your OS drive, and have a separate data drive for in case you have to wipe your system, right?

It won’t power on at all, pushing the power button does nothing. It just turned off by itself earlier today and hasn’t worked since.

I have an OS drive and the Lich folder is on a separate hard drive. I would regularly back up the Lich folder to a thumb drive but it’s been a few weeks at this point. Really that’s the main thing I’m worried about because I don’t really keep much on this computer, I mostly just use it to play games. Not looking forward to have to do all of that coding again if the hard drive is gone.

Yes.

Then the problem isn't the PSU. There might be a clog in the outlet, try loosening it with a fork.

Having worked a tech help desk job for almost 5 years....I need to ask the obvious and I only ask these questions because people I've spoken with just don't get it, at all....anything, not even the idea that computers need power to run.

(OMG. I feel for you and the problem you're having, but you just made so many bad call memories come rushing back to me that I'm just laughing at all the stupid stuff people do and don't understand about computers. None of these questions here are directed at you....they're just from me reminiscing about my old job.)

The room your computer is in, does everything else have power? Do the lights in the room work?
(seriously, I've had people trying to trouble shoot a computer issue and after going all the trouble shooting steps and then asking them to try plugging the computer into another outlet, they tell me they need to get a flash light because the lights aren't working in that one room - they work in every other room in the building, but not the one the computer is in).

Is your computer plugged into a surge protector? If so, do you have anything else plugged into the surge protector and are those things getting power?
(Yes, people sometimes bump the on/off switch on a surge protector and don't realize it).

Do you know where the power button is located on the tower?
No? Okay...
Do you know what the tower looks like?
No? Okay....
Do you see the mouse and keyboard?
Yes? Good....
Follow the cable from the mouse or keyboard and see where it goes and what it plugs into....
The keyboard and mouse are wireless....
(for fucks sake! how fucking dumb is this person that they can't find the computer tower!)

Me: Thanks for holding, what is the problem you're experiecing?
Customer: I installed the new RAM you shipped me and my computer stopped working.
Me: Okay, give me a moment and I'll pull up your account and check the work orders here.... Yes, I see we shipped a 4GB stick of DDR2 memory at your request. So you say you installed the RAM and now they computer won't start?
Customer: Yes, I installed the RAM and my computer turned off and now it won't turn back on.
Me: Okay, you installed the RAM and the computer powered off?
Customer: Yes, and now it won't turn back on.
Me: Okay. I just want to make sure I get my notes entered into the ticket here correctly. You got the new stick of RAM. You removed the side of the panel on the tower and installed the RAM while the computer was powered on?
Customer: Yes. And when I put the new stick of RAM in the computer powered off. I tried taking out the stick of RAM and the computer still won't power on.
(I had to mute my phone as I couldn't stop laughing....every one else on the help desk got one hell of a laugh out of the guy installing RAM while the computer was still on)
I had to explain to the customer that he shorted out his computer and I then had to spend the next 3 hours getting an old piece of this system up and running and online and on the network before I could remote in, transfer over necessary files to install the server program again....thankfully all the databases were being backed up on the registers at the store (like the software was designed to do) so I could get them operational again before they opened for business.

Hopefully a new PSU is all you need. I do know that when my younger brother's shitty PSU on a computer of his years ago died it took the MB, CPU and RAM with it. The GPU and HDD were spared.

"If so, do you have anything else plugged into the surge protector and are those things getting power?"

Classic scenario at an office I used to work at - everyone except me had their space heaters plugged into their UPS. Their computers went done about 8 seconds after the power outage (I'm surprised they lasted that long) ... they all asked me how I was able to keep from losing my work.

Looking back on it I am fortunate that not a single one of them stored papers or other flamable shit on their space heater / UPS setup.

I am running 3 characters, 6 browser windows with about 100 tabs open, Photoshop, telegram, skype, excel, word, slack, filezilla, firefox, spotify, evernote, deepl, notepad++, discord and calculator at this very moment with no trouble at all. Turns out one of my two video cards must have had a short or something because with that one video card plugged in it causes the whole computer to shut down just a split second after turning on, but with the video card unplugged the computer works just fine.

So I'll have to turn down the graphics for GS but otherwise I can still use my computer. Yay!

And it doesn't look like either hard drive had any problems so I still have all of my data, which is the best part because I was really not looking forward to coding all of that shit again. Lesson learned: back up nightly! And that's even a euphemism!

Could still be a PSU issue. What brand is it, how much is it rated for, and how much does your setup draw? If it were overworked I'd expect it to shut down when you first booted up, but it could be barely clinging to life. You can check PSU voltage with a multimeter if you're comfortable using one or in your BIOS as a last resort.

What does the event log say?

I bought a new PSU and had the same issue. That's when I (finally) thought to start unplugging things from the PSU to see if something was shorting out. Both my old and new PSU are 1200 watts and if I remember correctly I bought a more powerful PSU than I needed just in case, but I don't recall how much power my system can draw.

Where would I find the event log?

Jesus, 1200w? lol you're probably good then.

Event log just search > event viewer, then just see if there are any errors at the times of your crashes.

If you have two GPUs did you put your good one in the faulty one's PCI-e slot and get it to start up that way? Or is your second card still in the second slot or something?

:D :D :D

Hahaha. Well I have an english version of the listing somewheres I think. Trying to sell them here in Germany as a side-hustle. I have a BlackBox 1 built and sitting in bubble wrap right now. The G+ is with the upgraded version with a graphics card. I designed it and specced out everything (took a month of research). They are designed to be elite work PCs. I played around with the BB1. It handles everything nicely, except multi-boxing GS can be slow. If you play more than one character or want to play other games, you need the BB1 G+ which includes a small-form-factor 4GB DDR5 graphics card. That is what i'm running now, and basically it does everything i want with almost no lag. Only when I am running all 3 characters to a destination at once, then it jams up a bit but I think that would be with any PC. Some day Simu needs to rebuild stormfront for modern times :)

If people are interested I can post a page about these PCs, they are gorgeous and sit right on top of your desk no more clunky massive towers. Not that I have anything against that, you can pack even more power in a full-size tower. But Miniturization has come a long way which is why after building this PC i was so impressed with it I wanted to see if others might want too.

I could try shipping to US from Germany, only thing is we have duty to pay so would have to think about how that works. Also shipping of course would cost a bit, my guess: over 100 usd. However my step-brother in AZ builds PCs too, so could consider speaking with him about building it if someone was really interested.

Anyways good luck, you should buy a completely new machine and I reccommend looking into a small form factor setup depending on what kind of games you play. If you want to run the latest FPS on max settings, you will need a mid or fullsized tower. I play GS and work at the same time which is why I love the RAM and 6-core processor. Other games that I have played include hearthstone (not a very resource intense game), WOW on max settings no probs, and tested some FPS just to benchmark the graphics (i dont normally play FPS), and it handled it quite well.

Yeah I think when I bought my computer I figured with everything maxed out it could theoretically draw like 900ish watts or something so I opted for a 1200 watt PSU just in case.

No errors in the log that indicate something was a problem, though it's kind of hard to tell because the log is filled with random errors like everyday.

I left the video cards where they were and just plugged them in to the PSU one by one to isolate the problem. I suppose the problem could be the PCI-e slot itself.

Good news your HDDs are OK, might want to backup your vital files to the cloud as a precaution. I usually only do this once something breaks :D

Depending on how old your cards are, they do burn out after some time. I think my last PC my graphics card chugged along for 5 or 6 years then died. I replaced it and all was well.

Tgo01
09-17-2020, 06:40 AM
One thing I have noticed is the fan on the video card is now very loud, I hardly even remember hearing the video cards' fans when I had two of them. I don't know if this is because they worked together so neither had to work as hard so the fans didn't need to spin very fast, or if it's because the video card that died was the main video card in this setup and had to do more work but the fan died a while ago (which is why I don't remember hearing it) which caused the video card to overheat which is what killed it.

I'm not entirely sure how multiple video cards work together to handle workloads though so I could just be pulling shit out of my ass here.

nocturnix
09-17-2020, 07:26 AM
Not 100% sure how that works either. I would think mainly each card is responsible for the display its connected to, but I could be totally wrong on that.

Are you sure the card is fried? If its really old it could just be gunked up with dust. If the fan is not spinnign and it has dust that alone could cause it to overheat quicker. One last ditch effort before you toss it could be to open it up and try cleaning it if you have the time. Especially if you're going to throw it away anyways.

Yeah it's pretty old by now. It's a GeForce GTX 980Ti.

Also apparently the excessive fan noise is coming from the broken video card because it looks like the fans are running at full blast. I didn't even know the fans would run without power, I guess the motherboard powers the fans.

PCIE slot on the MB provides up to 75W. A 6pin power connector on a GPU can provide an additional 75W. An 8pin power connector on the GPU can provide an additional 150W.
My 980Ti has two 8pin connectors on it - yours should as well. 75W from the MB plus upwards of 300W from the 2pin power connectors and theoretically the 980Ti can draw upwards of 375W.

Depending on the model, most likely you're pulling closer to 300W during heavy game play.
Running two of them in SLI and you're looking at around 600W.
Everything else in the system probably draws upwards of around 200-250W (depending mostly on the CPU and if it's overclocked). I wouldn't say it's out of the realm that your system pulls a good 800-850W during heavy gaming.

I have a 980Ti AMP Omega (beast of a card, in size that is). Triple slot and weighs about 3lbs. I used to have a full tower case since I always had SLI builds, but after moving from dual GTX 570s to a single 980Ti, I just ran that 1 card. Normal case, MB mounts to the back panel and with the GPU installed it created a lot of sag. After about 2 years the PCIE slot was physically bending. Had I kept my system in that case the PCIE slot would certainly have broken due the weight of the GPU.

I transitioned to a different case (CoolerMaster HAF XB Evo). The mother mounts parallel to the ground and the GPU sits on top of the MB.

If you've had the build for a while and the 980Ti cards are not small, even the normal AIB that only take up 2 slots, it's very well possible the PCIE slot may have been damaged if you're experiencing GPU sag.

Since the new PSU still gives the same results with both cards powered, the PSU isn't the issue.
I would suggest you try each GPU on it's own, in the known working PCIE slot. Just to verify if both GPUs are functional. If both work, then the issue points to your MB having the problem.

I perfectly understand your concern. Data loss on the computer is a nightmare for many users. Files can be lost for various reasons: from an accidental mistake by the owner of the gadget and a system failure to a hacker attack and the actions of a malicious virus.
