I noticed this in a daily newletter that I get at work...

…In London, England, 35 Greenpeace protesters rushed onto the floor of the International Petroleum Exchange in February….intending to paralyze oil trading on the day the Kyoto environmental initiative took effect….but the floor traders took matters into their own hands…punching and kicking the protesters until they ran for their lives...

Cracked me up... the image of a bunch of (mostly) British traders beating-up a bunch of hippies, till the hippies left.

Odd how people trying to do some good are so villified while scociopathic behavior is applauded and encouraged.

But they were set upon by traders, most of whom were under the age of 25. “They were kicking and punching men and women indiscriminately,” a photographer said. “It was really ugly, but Greenpeace did not fight back.”

It's still funny though.

I think when you screw with people's livelyhood you run a risk. I have seen the most civilized people become animals where money is involved. Primitive instincts, money is our food and we have all seen what happens when you try to take food away from an animal.

As my prior posts have indicated I don't dislike Greenpeace. They have every right to protest outside the exchange. When they go inside they are trespassing.

TRYING TO DO SOME GOOD != STORMING A PLACE OF BUSINESS TO DISRUPT IT.

That's called terrorism. That's called a free pass to kick the absolute living shit out of a stupid hippy terrorist without having to go to jail for doing it. Count me in on that action every single time.

You obviously don't know me peam. Just because I am old enough to be your father doesn't mean I couldn't take a fucking hippy out with one shot.

He could make up for the age difference by bringing 5-6 young oil traders in his mini-van.

Backlash... Greenspeace IS a terrorist organization.

Their one saving grace is that they don't kill people in pushing their agenda on others... yet...

In several ways, Greenspeace does a lot more harm than good... as they're idealists taking things to the extreme...

You can't even be bothered to spell Greenpeace right.

:rolls eyes:

Anti or pro environment, that says something.

"a radical who employs terror as a political weapon"

"In London, England, 35 Greenpeace protesters rushed onto the floor of the International Petroleum Exchange in February….intending to paralyze oil trading on the day the Kyoto environmental initiative took effect."

Sounds like terrorism to me.

You got me wondering about the situation. I knew when I first read the thread someone would chime in defense of Greenpeace. And yeah I thought to myself "bleeding heart". But I asked myself, what do I know about Greenpeace? What would I have against them that Id be amused by people beating on them. Why do they have such a negative reputation?

Admittedly, I dont know a lot about Greenpeace. I have vague recollections of some members chaining themselves to boats to stop some seaborne activity.

So, I do some net-trawling to get a clue about them. I come up with a mission statement thanks to Wikipedia:

Greenpeace is an independent, campaigning organisation which uses non-violent, creative confrontation to expose global environmental problems, and to force solutions for a green and peaceful future. Greenpeace's goal is to ensure the ability of the earth to nurture life in all its diversity.

Reading a little more of their history they typically try to intersperse themselves between one party and some facet of the environment, such as floating boats in between a whaling vessel and a whale. Or trying to be in the way of nuclear testing, so that it could not commence.

Now I admit googling is far from comprehensive research - but no joke - every damn thing I can find about them suggests a commitment to non-violence. I dont imagine the traders had any trouble abusing the GP people because they probably didnt fight back. The word terrorist gets tossed around a lot these days - but there seems to be a big friggin difference between these guys and some bastard strapping a bomb to his back and getting on a public bus to me.

Personally, Im pretty conservative and tend to favor progress over the environment. But oddly enough - Im not too thrilled with people kicking these folks around. If they were tresspassing then the cops should have been called and they could be peacefully removed.

Funny story about Greenpeace, they decided that they where going to release the dolphins that the Navy had at the base in San Diego on the grounds that if the military had them, they must be being abused. (For the record, the Navy treats it's dolphins better than Sea World treats theirs ). Anyway, this guy sneaks onto the base one night, and tries to open the gates to the dolphin pen to release them, but because he didn't want to walk across the top of the gate to reach the release mechanism, he jumped in the water with the dolphins. Completely ignoring the sign that stated that the dolphins where trained to defend moored ships against swimmers. The way this works, is one of the dolphins rams the swimmer, and it's partner goes and rings a bell to alert the people that there is a swimmer in the water, then they swap...and there where 8 dolphins in the pen....by the time the DOD Police noticed that the bell was ringing and went down to investigate, the dolphins had pretty much battered their "rescuer" into one huge bruise. Who was promptly arrested, and charged with trespassing on the way to the hospital.

It was more to reply to Atlanteax calling Greenpeace "terrorists." I could really care less about what they do for the most part... I just find it dumb immediately labelling an organization that you disagree with terrorists. For my part, by his definition I was pointing out that many conservative organizations would count as well.
