I'm trying to gauge my level 86 wizard's enchanting prowess. I grabbed probably the 2 most difficult items I have in my possession to test.
1st item:
crafted of bone (-250), 5x enchanted (-25?), has air flares [not vacuum/void, air flares that act like unbalance....perhaps they're like the air flares on Coraesine weapons?] (-100?)
My guess would be a difficulty of -375
2nd item:
crafted of wood (-100), 5x enchanted (-25?), MCW [17 CER] (-289)
My guess would be a difficulty of -414
In a workshop, familiar present. Difficulty casts:
For item 1 = this enchantment will be difficult, but possible. (35+%)
For item 2 = only fail to enchant it if you are horribly unlucky (97+%)
Am I missing something in the difficulty of these items? There are no other special properties on either item - no scripts, no ensorcell, etc. Perhaps the air flares are -200?

Need more info.
Character's:
LOG bonus
INT bonus
MIU ranks
AS ranks
EMC ranks
Wizard spells
Complete descriptions for both items. The material difficulty for both bone and wood depends on the type of item (shield, weapon, runestaff etc.). If they are both weapons then the material difficulties you posted are correct.
Note that the enchant messaging, only fail to enchant it if you are horribly unlucky, has a 100% success rate not 97% since there is no longer a 3% random failure in the new system (the wiki hasn't been updated). Also, an item with a +25 starting enchant has a difficulty of -63.
Once the sum of the character's enchant bonuses is calculated then the difficulty range of each item can be established. But it does appear that item 1 could have an additional -100 penalty.

Does the first item have any sort of script? That would add to the difficulty. Bone sounds like parasite, which would have an additional script difficulty.

Both are weapons. Bone weapon inspects as bone. Other weapon inspects as wood.
LOG bonus = 25
INT bonus = 27
MIU ranks = 110
AS ranks = 110
EMC ranks = 95
Wizard spells = 94
Level = 86

Bone weapon is just a plain old (old, had it for 15+ years) bone weapon that was enchanted from what was originally 2x?? years ago and I've eventually enchanted it up to 5x over the years. Only other addition was the air flares from one or two EGs back from an Air Token.

Perhaps the air flares are -200?
From the numbers you've posted that would be my guess although -200 seems like a pretty severe penalty just for an uncommon flare.

The sum of your level 86 wizard's enchanting bonuses is 462.
Level: 86
Wizard Spells: 180 (86 * 2) + (8 * 1)
Logic: 25
Intuition: 27
MIU: 11 (110 ranks/10)
AS: 11 (110 ranks/10)
EMC: 47 trunc(95 ranks/2)
WKshop+Fam: 75
TOTAL BONUS: +462
First item has a difficulty of -413
Material: -250 (bone)
+25 Enchant: -63
Air Flare: -100
TOTAL PENALTY: -413
The messaging, difficult but possible, indicates that the item's difficulty has a range from -408 to -427. This is calculated from the success chance range of 35% to 54%. The measured difficulty of -413 is within this range.
462 - 35 = 427
462 - 54 = 408
The issue is with item 2. In order to receive the messaging, only fail to enchant it if you are horribly unlucky, the maximum difficulty of the item has to be at least 100 points below the sum of the character's enchant bonuses (462). This means that the second item's difficulty must be less than or equal to (462 - 100) = 362. Maybe it's inspecting as wood but only has the steel penalty of -10. That would reduce the item penalty to -362 which would place it exactly at the 100% success threshold (462 -362) = 100. But that's just a guess. You would need to have a GM check the item to see where the discrepancy exists.

Edited to add item 2 theoretical difficulty as shown.
Material: -100 (wood)
CER: -289 (17^2)
+25 Enchant: -63
Total Penalty: -452
If the item's actual penalty was -452 then the messaging would be, this enchantment will be nearly impossible.

Thanks for the info. I don't see all that stuff available on the wiki - unless I overlooked it while using my phone to look things up. I'd venture to guess item 2 is flagged wrong and really should be steel since it's called an alloy in the item description and doesn't have wood on it. That would make more sense over air flares imposing double the penalty over other flares.

When it comes to enchanting formula questions, fuck the wiki. We've got Riltus/Mark. I really appreciate the detailed answers he provides whenever this type of question pops up.

+1 to that. Great, informative analysis for all enchanters and everyone interested in enchanting.
