Today is day #2 in my quest to cease smoking.. I have my nicorette, and that makes me happy..
so, any tips, suggestions, warnings, etc.. regarding quitting smoking?
I am 25, have been smoking since 14, and really really hate it.. to the point where I wish I hadn't started.. But I figured that since I am probably going to be alive a bit longer then I expected, I should quit so I'm not a wreck when I'm 50.

TEll yourself that you'll stop stinking.
That's a MAJOR plus.
I quit smoking this past December (mid-December, really) and I found it to be pretty fucking tough considering I did it cold turkey. These are some tips that I can give you.
1. First three days are the hardest
2. After the first three days, you'll be getting hardcore cravings when you have had smokes usually (after a meal, when you get into a car, when leaving a store), the trick is to be in those situations as much as possible and not smoke, breaks the habit.
3. Chew gum. Real gum that tastes pretty good.
4. Keep your mind occupied and try not to think of cigarettes. The more busy you are, the less of a chance you have for a craving.
5. Wash all your clothes except a shirt or something. Take a nice big wiff of that cancer shirt after the end of each week. You'll see how gross it smells.
6. Don't be around cigarette stuff (ash trays, butts, ect.)
7. Don't fall into the habit of saying, "Well, I'll just have one" No, one is too much. You fail at life if you have that one.
8. Just lie to yourself and say you don't want one and that cigarettes are actually fucking gross.
9. Get carrot sticks, celery, or some other fruit to snack on. You'll get more of an appetite and you don't want to turn into a fat fuck.
10. Rember remember remember, to stay positive! I suggest going without the gum. It's still got nicotine in it. Try to do it without and it'll be a lot faster and painless of a processes (IMHO).
Good luck!

I quit about six months ago when I started playing poker online. Gambling and cigarettes always went together like peanut butter and jelly for me.
I started to get disgusted with myself after I realized I'd be up since 7 am, work 9-5, get home at 6, and smoke 3-5 cigarettes all day (and that was including almost 2 hours of driving). Then I'd play poker online for 3 hours at night and smoke half a pack or more (without even realizing it.)
I quit cold turkey, and for the first 10-14 days I was one cranky, irritable bitch. But since then everything has been fine. I look back now and can't believe I ever smoked, as the mere smell of it bothers the hell outta me.
edit: Oh yeah...advice...
I ate a ton of sunflower seeds the first couple weeks to keep my mind off of cigarettes. To the point of which my mouth was raw from the salt/flavoring on the shells.
Forget the health issues, and think of the money you're saving (It was ~$6 per pack in NJ when I quit). Use the money you saved and buy yourself something you normally wouldn't be so quick to splurge on.

that's happened to me in the past attempts at quitting smoking.. I won't do it this time.
10. Rember remember remember, to stay positive! I suggest going without the gum. It's still got nicotine in it. Try to do it without and it'll be a lot faster and painless of a processes (IMHO).
if I don't have nicotine replacement, I feel like a heroin addict on withdrawl (probably)

Well, then atleast upgrade to Top Ramen!
Being a college student, at the least buy yourself some better beer for a week or two. Even if you were only smoking a half a pack a day, that's still around ~ $20 a week. That's like a week's food budget in college.
You do feel strung out, but think of it this way, you're no longer dependant on nicotine. Plus, gum is so damn expensive. Whatever way works for yout hough, good luck and keep us posted.

PS: Tell everyone you know that you quit. You'll feel like a social schmuck when people see you smoke and that is deterrent enough.

Since I go through 1 pack a day, and it costs roughly 5.50$ for a pack, I will actually be saving quite bit, which makes me happy.. but I'm primarily concerned about emphesyma, heart disease, cancer, and other ill health effects I get/can get from smoking.
Ramen is so disgusting. It's low quality noodles with extra salt. BARF CITY!

Quitting is fucking hard. I've only been smoking like, a year or so, and it's a bitch.. and I don't even smoke much. 5-10 smokes a day usually.
Remember though, don't ever justify having 'just one more smoke'... cause it takes one, and you're hooked again.
Some medical facts that I know of that you might wanna keep in mind; Cravings usually last only about a minute. Just remind yourself you only have 60 seconds till the feeling goes away, and that'll help... (But that doesn't mean you won't get another craving immidiately after). Also, it takes about 3 months to kick any habit.. including smoking. Three months, and you're home free.
..:( I suck at quitting. I only managed to quit for 2 weeks before I was back on the cancer sticks.

Smoking at 15-16 years old in 2005 is one of the stupidiest thing a teen can do.
A worse scenario should be playing gemstone AND smoking while being 15-16 years old.

Sorry X.
Saying Quebec is a nation is like me saying Florida is a nation.
It's not.
It doesn't mean that I would love Canada to plunge into a civil war over Quebec leaving the country. I think it would be fun to watch how quick those pseudo-Frenchies throw up the ol' white flag.

The only reason you're smoking is to impress the ladies.
But most ladies aren't impressed about smokers.
So why do you smoke beside killing yourself because you aren't happy with yourself?
p.s. Shave the hair, you look like a smoker.
p.p.s Quitting tomorrow is smoking the day after.

Since Quebec isn't a "nation", your UN law makes little difference.
And even if that were the case.. you are currently living in Canada which is recognized as the country that Quebec currently belongs to.

Actually, my girlfriend hates the fact that I smoke. I hate it too.
The reason I started was as an "after session" to marijuana... and I have learned that knocking pot was much easier than knocking smoking.
And yes, I started pot because of peer pressure and curiousity... and that is clearly because I hate myself.

It's pretty obvious. It's pretty normal too (at that age).
Yet, what you're doing won't help you in anway.
And in your country, in Canada, smoking is expensive. Women love money. See the pattern, dude?

I quit smoking tobacco in the same fashion that I quit smoking marijuana: I promised not to do it again after the first puff.
The only difference is I actually finished the joint.
Though I have to wonder, why is Chadj smoking tobacco when he's so against marijuana? WTF is going on?!

I am not so against marijuana. I don't think it's bad at all.. I did it for a few months, and stopped. It was fun, but not something I wanna be spending lotsa money on.
I hate smoking. The difference between smoking tobacco and smoking marijuana is tobacco is hard to quit.. while marijuana was easy as hell.

Curious... When did I say marijuana use is so uber bad?
<X's psycho babble>
Yes, X. Every single person in the world addicted to smoking has a dependance problem. Definately. Or, maybe, it's called physical and mental addiction? It's a habit, X. And habits are medically proven to be hard to break (relatively speaking).. even the way you put your jacket on is a habit. A habit for many people here is to go online, and open this page (just an assumption). Does that mean all those people have a dependance problem too?

I could go grocery shopping and it would last me a month...no idea how looking back now.
A box of cereal and a dozen eggs was breakfast for 2 weeks. Ramen, soup, pasta-roni, pasta, and hamburgers. $20 was a slight exaggeration, but you can certainly stretch a dollar when you need to at college.

Smoking pot isn't bad.. It's like drinking a beer everynow and then.
It's the X times per day and the vedging of your mind that is the problem.
It's the smoking the pot before getting up that is.
And so on, we all know about it anyway.

I don't see a contradiction because you're presuming smoking is an addiction and a habit.
I'm not saying the same thing, therefore, cannot contradict myself with YOUR ideas.
People with dependance problems = smoker/drinker/druger for life.

Smoking is a habit and an addiction. Period.
I go outside of a house, and I light up.. not always because the addiction cravings have set in, but because it's habit.
Same with getting in a car. Leaving a store, after a meal, etc. etc.
Just to restate,
Smoking is a habit and an addiction.
Xcalibur

It's an habit if you want it to be an habit.
You LIMIT yourself the way you want.
Addiction is another thing.
Yet, I'll smoke a cigarette and I won't developp the addiction, does that make me a super-human?
Some scientists are proving that most drinkers/smokers/addicted people got the same gene(s) that helps getting addicted.
I know I don't have it:clap:

Posting just to stress the point that you need something for those cravings like brushing your teeth, gum, or suckers. The latter two worked for me. And that Arkans advice of <<< 7. Don't fall into the habit of saying, "Well, I'll just have one" No, one is too much. You fail at life if you have that one. >>> is great, especially the last part, when you have that one you've essentially stopped quitting and you need to start the whole process again.
Edited to say Congratulations!

Um, alcoholism has nothing to do with gene's. If you drink too much, be it as a habit or whatever, your body begins to need alcohol, otherwise you'll start getting the shakes, pain and a whole host of other shit.
