Yeh..so..

Level 19 critter vrs level 70 Sorcerer.

The minotaur warrior curls up on its hind legs and lowers its head. With a tremendous howl, it launches itself toward you. You swerve aside to avoid the impending collision but are too slow and are tackled under the full force of the warrior.
... 30 points of damage!
Hard blow to your temple scrambles brain!
The tingling sensation and sense of security leaves you.
You feel less confident than before.
The powerful look leaves you.
A dark shadow seems to detach itself from your body, swiftly dissipating into the air.
The very powerful look leaves you.
The white light leaves you.
The deep blue glow leaves you.
The air calms down around you.
The light blue glow leaves you.
The brilliant luminescence fades from around you.
The bright luminescence fades from around you.
The silvery luminescence fades from around you.

A) I'd been there 20 seconds, and I'm not encumbered.

B) I'd never been there before, and I wanted to explore the place.

You want to get real depressed.. go up to Stonehold and fuck with Illoke shit that is 5 levels below you and you are a rogue with maxed dexterity, maxed agility, wizard strength and completely unencumbered.

Those were the days...

If I recall correctly. Ophion used to brag that he designed his critters not to take level into account for attacks like this (specifically Mino's and Krag Dwellers). I dont remember the quote but it was something like "My critters don't need levels to kill you".

Anyway. Sorry you walked into the cesspool without knowing. Minos are one of the nastiest critters around no matter what level you are. Thats why they were often rich and mainly hunted by people for cash farming (since their defensive abilities dont match their offense). On top of which, the area was non-foggable which was a big deterrent when decays meant anything.

That being said, there are hunters who prefer it that way. People who are fans of Illoke, Minotaurs, FireMages, Lava Golems and so on. Theyll generally defend that such areas are the only challenging areas left in the game. Everyones mileage varies.

I fail to see the challenging part of the instant kill maneuvers.

If I want a challenge, I will hunt over my head against a superiorly leveled critter.

A shame that there are some levels that bottle neck you into 2 or three easy hunting areas except for those stupid insta-kill maneuvers. Once a wizard hits 60 is there a single "challenging" hunting area? I've yet to see one.

maneuver kills = BS. We don't get them, why should they?

03-28-2005, 10:37 AM
Once you hit 60, get ready to have your hunting options limitted seriously. On the bright side, WE JUST RELEASED A NEW LEVEL 20 HUNTING AREA!

There are always challenging areas. If you like the maneuver attacks and find them enjoyable and challenging.. at level 60, go to Illoke. If you don't like that, go to the bank, withdraw 50,000 silvers and go play with the roa'ters.

It's the same "challenge".

I dont know, thats what I meant by everyone's mileage varies. There have been a dozen times I swore I wouldnt go back into firemages or the stronghold. Must be something to it. I keep going back.

It's called being the only level 60+ hunting area near the Landing. That's the something that kept me going back. I found the area extremely annoying.. especially since the maneuver attacks they were using would be something a very dexterous character should be able to avoid.

The maneuvers in itself aren't the problem.

It's the crit table (still heavily based on rolemaster) that is.

You can be killed and get 30 hp damage.

They should revise those tables, add more variables. Or better, put more steps (like a 20 ranking table or whatever).

Location Location Location!

Truth be told the last two deaths I ate in there were from mauls to the neck. So I suppose I have no right to complain on stonefist.

I never died from being fisted..it was normally from them falling on me.

Can't you quake or ewave to knock them down first?

Yes (I assume yes with quake, but you can ewave them).. and as a rogue, Falgrin would sweep them down.

Trinitis

never did ewave. Quaking them causes them to fall on you. I know that first hand.

Sorcerers have always been notoriously flat footed. My empath has more grace and manueverability than my sorcerer. If I managed to dodge a roa'ter with my sorcerer then I considered it my lucky day and got the hell out of there.
