What should i be using for armor to start and what should i be working to?

Ultimately Aug Chain but what you wear to get there is up to you. I went stock leathers to 4x brig to aug chain and never looked back. I prioritized getting into aug chain ASAP but I am sure others have gone different routes and had success.
